  • Infinite Zissou

    Anyway I need coffee.

  • Infinite Zissou

I know how much everyone loves our theme song so I got rid of it.

  • Abe

You know how to read the audience.

  • Infinite Zissou

Mistress America definitely has 2015’s best soundtrack so far.

  • Infinite Zissou

    Bring on Gerwig the director.

  • Infinite Zissou

Dean Wareham’s cameos in Baumbach’s movies are becoming a fun treat as well.

  • Infinite Zissou

The snooty shaman role in While We’re Young is probably the best.

  • Infinite Zissou

    Tough crowd.

  • Infinite Zissou

Just ran the numbers and it looks like I do in fact have a top 10 for 2015 so far. Brutal competition to follow.

  • Infinite Zissou

Alright well I’m going to turn on my Galaxie 500 Spotify playlist and do some work then.

  • Infinite Zissou

I’ll turn this into an article in January after the interesting stuff makes it to Omaha. I’m looking at you, The Revenant. Or is that wide in December?

  • Infinite Zissou

In 40 days Ronin will make a bunch of comments on this page after I’ve forgotten about it.

  • Infinite Zissou

Oh hey Tim’s the one who’s really missing isn’t it?

  • Infinite Zissou

When is my art-house theater going to release its fall repertory series? I mean Jesus do they think I have a life?

  • Infinite Zissou

Hey is it alright if we dress Chris up in a wig, glasses, and moustache and say he’s a Supernaughts critic so he can moderate my Q&A? He won’t do anything to sully the name.

  • Infinite Zissou

We’re going with the name Harvey Armstrong though he’s partial to Lube Donavich.

  • Infinite Zissou

It’s basically just a joke for me.

  • Tarmac492.1

Do you think Gerwig will be ruined by large studio films or was the bad taste of Arthur(one of the worst remakes ever) enough to keep her away? Has Parker Posey been any good studio films? She was in Blade 2 or 3? Are those good? 3 was shite.

  • Tarmac492.1

I cant listen then. It better not lose that PBS feel that I love.

  • Tarmac492.1

The first time I saw gerwig, I think, she got her brains blown out in House of the Devil–an excellent horror film by Ti West–who is slowly losing the goodwill built by it.

  • Infinite Zissou

From interviews I’ve read with her, she was excited by the idea of joining SAG and getting health insurance from studio gigs but has since decided to focus more on forming her artistic voice in writing and now directing. Her project isn’t housed by a studio I don’t think so I’m imagining it’ll be more along the lines of Frances or Mistress. Hopefully. I know Baumbach wanted to direct the script but she wanted to keep it for herself once she could get financing.

  • Infinite Zissou

What ever happened to the leading actress in that? She was excellent as well. I think the only thing I’ve seen her in since was a commercial.

  • Tarmac492.1

That is happy news. Arthur was gag-inducing. I would hate to see her as best friend in a Cameron Diaz Jason Segel raunchy rom-com. She is too smart for that. Yeah, so I can be a snob. Fuck you peasants!!!!

  • Infinite Zissou

I was just listening to Parker Posey’s WTF episode on the way to work this morning. She’s interesting. She was talking about how all the interesting projects don’t pay anything anymore so she’s happy to take some well-paying gigs and wants to be a scientist in a Marvel movie or something. I get the sense that she’d always want to take on interesting roles in addition to paying the bills like anyone else.

  • Infinite Zissou

I’m hopeful that she’ll make her mark as a director with a career similar to Baumbach’s. Making interesting movies she wants to make with low budgets.

  • Tarmac492.1

Just looked her up. SHe has been in some things. A few indies that maybe I will rent on Amazon. Agreed she was excellent in that. Vulnerable but not weak .Excellent movie. The Sacrament–besides spotlighting Amy Siemetz’s cuteness quotient, was fucking more boring than Sunday Mass.

  • Infinite Zissou

Haven’t seen that one. He’s got some new one coming out that’s a western or something doesn’t he?

  • Tarmac492.1

Yes, she said something similar on Opie and Jim. She sounds really cool. SHe was great on Louie.

  • Tarmac492.1

I really believe that smaller budgets make for better movies–provided the people involved are talented. Those financial limitations really can make you have to get creative. Or write a fucking killer story.

  • Infinite Zissou

I’m with you on that for sure.

  • Tarmac492.1

Yes. Looks kind of big-budget. I hope it is good. Strangely enough, he is part of the Swanberg crew, I believe. He may have gotten a mention in Siemetz’s Sun Dont Shine. I know Shane Carruth was involved in that one too. What a cool, creative crew. God, my friends are so boring with their kids and their mortgages and in ground pools.

  • Infinite Zissou

Did you like Upstream Color? I had trouble with it. It was well made though.

  • Tarmac492.1

Havent watched it yet. Always meaning to. You ever see Another Earth? I would put Brit Marling in that Gerwig class.

  • Infinite Zissou

I haven’t but I’ve heard a lot of good things. She was good in that Richard Gere movie that brought Chris Eigeman out of retirement to frown and say a couple serious lines.

  • Tarmac492.1

Arbitrage?? That was pretty good. I liked All Good Things with Gosling and Dunst and that was kind of similar. Based on the Robert Durst shit.

  • Infinite Zissou

I saw All Good Things after watching The Jinx and I think that kind of ruined it for me.

  • Tarmac492.1

Dunst yes. Marling no. Still havent watched the Jinx.

  • Tarmac492.1

We need to figure out a way to have a SN Indie Film Festival. I am assuming Abe’s place is big enough for us all to crash at???

  • Infinite Zissou

    I’d assume so.

  • Tarmac492.1

In the movies everyone that runs websites is fabulously wealthy and movies never lie!!!!

  • ponyboy_360

    I own, “The Sacrament” blu.
    As a fan of, “Vice”.
I felt like it was a decent representation of what could go
    drastically wrong.
If something really went wrong on a location “Vice” story.

  • ponyboy_360

    Disagree.
The Ti West commentary was highly informative.
With the budget he had, he did a great job.
    My opinion.
Also, a lot of awesome bonus features.

  • ponyboy_360

    “Upstream Colour”.
    Great.
    Amazing.
    Owner.

  • ponyboy_360

I remember telling you to watch that.
    Terrible make-up.
But that was the first I’d heard of Durst.

  • ponyboy_360

    That’s what I thought.

  • ponyboy_360

    I always listen on Wednesday.
I think I’ve left comments on the last few VL’s that have gone unseen.

  • ponyboy_360

    I love Posey.
    Always have.
I love her independent film choices.
    Of her films, I own.
    “Dazed & Confused”. (Criterion)
    “Kicking & Screaming”. (Criterion)
    “The Doom Generation”.
    “The Daytrippers”.
    “Basquiat”.
    “Waiting For Guffman”.
    “Best In Show”.
    “The Anniversary Party”.
    “A Mighty Wind”.
    “For Your Consideration”.

  • ponyboy_360

    Agreed.

  • Tarmac492.1

It was well made. I just found it kind of a boring retelling of the Jonestown massacre–a story I was familiar with. There were some disturbing elements and Gene Jones??? was good in the lead. I will look forward to West’s next.

  • Tarmac492.1

I need to watch. I will move it up the list and try for this weekend. Building up my confidence for a Trust article, but I am kind of afraid because the movie does not seem of this earth to me. It is better than this planet. It might be the chintzy keyboards but I love that movie.

  • Tarmac492.1

I liked it. A cold, distant Gosling playing a cold distant character. Dunst showed the goodies though. We need big actors to make small films like this. Did you ever catch Martha Marcy May Marlene? John Hawkes is great in everything.

  • Tarmac492.1

    Best in SHow. Flawless.

  • ponyboy_360

    Because of Gene Jones.
I didn’t mind the Jonestown element.
    The camera loved him.
    Great stories on the commentary.
Also, with the cross of having a “Vice” episode being filmed.
Ti West is hit or miss for me.
I own this, so there’s that.
    Cheers.

  • ponyboy_360

    It’s pretty polarizing.
    I own, “Primer”.
& have listen to both commentaries dozens of times.
    So, I’m biased.
    “Upstream Colour”, it’s a trip.
    Kinda like a book.
A lot of hate on it.
I love Carruth’s direction & especially, Sound Design.
    Hope you dig it.
    Good luck on the article.

  • ponyboy_360

    I rented “All Good Things”
back when there were video stores.
I rented it, because I owned Andrew Jarecki’s documentary.
    “Capturing The Friedmans”.
    The commentary on
“All Good Things” is when I learned ALL about Durst.
So when ” The Jinx” came out.
I already was primed, & all over it.
    What a fantastic HBO presentation.
    & I actually own, “MMMM”.
    Because I love
    John Hawkes!!!
    Good taste man.
    Cheers.

  • ponyboy_360

As a person who has my dog’s name tattooed from wrist to elbow.
    I’m gonna agree.
    Love it.
    Love her in everything though.

  • Infinite Zissou

It’s one of those movies I didn’t particularly like but I would absolutely rewatch.

  • Infinite Zissou

I caught MMMM just starting on HBO one night when I couldn’t sleep and it didn’t really help me get back to sleep but what a great movie.

  • Infinite Zissou

    I will search for those.

  • Infinite Zissou

I totally forgot she was in Kicking and Screaming. I love her as well. She’s great in the new Woody Allen movie too.

  • Infinite Zissou

    “That’s a bear in a bee costume.”

  • Infinite Zissou

Damnit where are the mean comments I could feature?

  • Tarmac492.1

Hawkes is a damn good actor.

  • Infinite Zissou

    Olsen was magnificent as well.

  • Tarmac492.1

I liked her in Liberal Arts with bland and super earnest Josh Radnor. I liked that movie pretty well and thought it avoided the usually Hollywood bs. I kick Radnor in the teeth because his Ted character from How I Met your Mother was such a bore that no one would hang out with him, except maybe toolboy Ross from Friends.

  • You changed the theme song?!!?

  • Infinite Zissou

It could come back. I’m trying new things to see what sticks.

  • I like it. Just a bit unexpected that’s all

  • Chris finally saw Blade Runner? Now he’s a Man.

  • I’ve been trying to track some Philip K. Dick from the online second hand-bookstores. When I get my tax returns, I’m gonna buy the shit out of them

  • franks_television

    Too bad he won’t live.

  • Then again, who does?

  • franks_television

The first 2/3rds of that movie were really good but I was disappointed in the ending. Gerwig was great in it though.

  • franks_television

I read Electric Sheep and a few others but they just seemed crazy. I definitely prefer Blade Runner.

  • “Rachel?!?”
Lol, I never even thought about that

  • Maybe I should buy just one or two first? “A Scanner Darkly” and something else. I just feel this giant hole in my scifi-book knowledge

  • I just rewatched “Constantine” a couple weeks ago. It has a certain charm

  • I just love the fact, that Edward James Olmos has like two lines in English, but still manages to almost steal the entire movie….
    http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rJFR0n-_ITs/UVRsUg5HGwI/AAAAAAAAm1k/1SYXPYHpHuw/s1600/Edward_James_Olmos+hat+Blade+Runner.jpg

  • franks_television

I downloaded some audiobooks. I’m not a huge fan of sci fi literature in general, so you might like it better. I’m currently listening to Ender’s Game though, which is really good.

  • franks_television

    Yeah, he’s a bad ass.

  • Sometimes when I watch the movie, I just watch what he’s doing in the background.

  • There’s this one line that Reeves delivers just PERFECTLY. When Rachel Weisz’s character is preparing to go to the hell-dimension by getting dunked in the tub, she asks “should I take off my clothes?” And Reeves has this long pause before he says “I’m thinking…”
    That moment always kills me.

  • “Left tits”?
    WTF?

  • I really dig these music selections.

  • Tarmac492.1

I was cool with the ending, actually. I am still waiting for West to get back to these levels. He is a talented filmmaker however.

  • Infinite Zissou

Disqus would be wise to give me the ability to feature this exchange.

  • ponyboy_360

    It definitely requires, I’d say,
    at least three viewings.
I play it all the time actually.
Will have it on in the background while making dinner.
    I love it.
But, yes, either you you dig it or you don’t.
    Cheers.

  • ponyboy_360

    & I will listen tonight.
    Wednesday is my VL day.
    Peace.

  • ponyboy_360

Definitely one of my favourite character actresses.
    Always solid.

  • ponyboy_360

    Ha!
    She owns that role!
Love that entire cast & film.

  • ponyboy_360

    7:35 p.m.
    Have to charge phone now.
Incoming long ass obligatory ponyboy post.
Just to get this out of the way.
    “Mistress America” tickets bought for
    this Saturday matinee.
“American Ultra”, was a fucking blast.
Many out loud laughs from us.
    Stopped reading “2666” on
    Part 3.
Decided to jump into “Infinite Jest”.
Do to your passionate & compelling recommendation.
I apologize if I repeat some comments already made, regarding podcast.
    VL 25.
    New intro/outro tune, better.
    Chris, “Blade Runner-Final Cut”!!!!
    Atta boy.
I could talk for hours, glad you finally experienced it.
On the big screen, no less!
    “I got this weird facial….”
    Ha!
    You guys have really gelled.
Really good back & forth for the listener.
Again, love how you include books.
We finally watched, “A Trip To Italy”
    on my VOD.
    Hilarious, great recommendation!
Not a fan of “Constantine” or
    “Van Helsing”.
But I appreciate people’s guilty pleasures.
    Mine would be something like,
“The 9th Gate”, of that era.
    YES!
    Get on “Penny Dreadful”!
    Extremely cinematic.
I thought I’d hate it, with the eclectic cast/characters.
    Hooked from Episode 1.
    iTunes Season Pass, homie.
I have Starz & Showtime included in my cable package.
The U.S. cable packages must be very convoluted.
    “Pi”, sooooooo amazing, c’mon now.
    Is Baumbach a Zissou biter?!?!?
    Say what now?!
Every time you bring up movies or a book that Chris hasn’t seen or read.
    I smoke a bowl.
    I am now, super high.
    Thanks Chris!
Gerwig is always fantastic, love her.
“TD 2” is good, damn you Ziss!
A blind drunk crawling in the afternoon sun to collect his dropped beer.
Would get zero help from me.
    Zero.
I’m a “holding the door open” guy.
People are surprised every time some tattooed guy does something courteous.
I love the “thank you” from the people.
Plus, my girlfriend would kick my ass if I didn’t do something that should be a prerequisite for a guy to do.
Keep pimping, “It Follows”, I love it.
Really great job, Ziss & Chris!
    Another enjoyable VL episode.
    Cheers.

  • Infinite Zissou

Laughed multiple times reading all of that. The Ninth Gate is such a weird movie. So watchable but I always feel like I missed something every time I try to make sense of it. Like there was a missing reel or something. I guess that doesn’t happen anymore.

  • Infinite Zissou

Is there a Supernaughts awards thing at the end of the year? Or in January probably. I’ll collect votes or whatever and make the categories if we want to do that. If it’s not too bold of me to say, I’d have fun doing a Vegetable Lasagna-hosted awards show at the end of January where we go through all the winners. It can be live with call ins or something.

  • Tarmac492.1

That is a joy of loving films. I have spent entire watches of Dawn of the Dead just wondering what could possibly happening in the neighborhood or building in the background. I love the possibilities. I think that is why i love the scene when the chopper takes off and you see all the lights go off in the skyscraper in the background. It is so perfect.

  • Tarmac492.1

You need to get Eigeman on a VLS

  • Infinite Zissou

Think he’d respond to a twitter inquiry or do I have to become famous first?

  • We have to do this just because we never did get a Bruce Awards at Talkbacker like we were supposed to.

Now we need a name. I’ll help with this however you want, man. I must have it.

  • The award show should be live on the radio thing, BTW. Get a host, have call ins for winners, etc.

  • Tarmac492.1

You are famous. I would maybe try a DM. Does he have a website? Maybe a contact like that?

  • Infinite Zissou

I have no good ideas for names. It should totally be a bloated 4 hour crazy thing with lots of guests though.

  • Another idea that floated around on TB for a time. We could do a streaming film festival. How hard could it be to get streaming rights to a few films for a weekend? I dunno.

  • Tarmac492.1

And just mention all the guests the Movies and Stuff guys have so you seem legit. I use the SN for that.

  • Infinite Zissou

He appears to have a website but no contact info on it.

  • NAUGHT AWARDS

  • Tarmac492.1

Does he live in NYC? I will kidnap him and drive to Nebraska.

  • Infinite Zissou

    Couldn’t hurt.

  • Tarmac492.1

as long as I get be stinking drunk during it. As long as I participate ironically.

  • Tarmac492.1

    Cumhole Fingerblaster Awards

  • Tarmac492.1

My Hyundai has a spacious trunk.

  • Infinite Zissou

Make him write a sequel to Metropolitan.

  • Tarmac492.1

This sounds like Misery’s retarded cousin which is ok by me.

  • Infinite Zissou

    More intellectual if anything.

  • Tarmac492.1

Check Out Sun Dont Shine directed by Amy Siemetz if you havent seen it already and if you get a chance. Would like to hear your thoughts. I dig these indie actresses directing good flicks without the hoopla of a Angelina Jolie or something.

  • Infinite Zissou

    Jesus.

  • Tarmac492.1

    CFA’s for short?

  • Tarmac492.1

that would be a cool idea. Maybe if we showed them the site. It looks professional enough as long as they dont read the content

  • franks_television

    Special guests?

  • franks_television

The 9th Gate is awesome. I want to read the book.

  • Infinite Zissou

I can’t attest to their mental abilities.

  • ponyboy_360

    Most definitely.
    It is pure cheese.
    Bad effects.
    But I just love it.
It’s the whole, in search of mysterious books.
    That I like.
    Guilty pleasure, not an owner.
But will definitely watch when it’s on.
    I here ya though.

  • ponyboy_360

    What up franks!
    Sorry for the late reply.
My email doesn’t give me notifications.
    Hope you’re good homie.
I do love, “The 9th Gate”.
But it is cheese in parts.
    Like I said, I respect people’s
    guilty pleasures.
    I gotta bounce bud.
    I miss your incredibly witty
    posts.
    Talk soon chief.
    Peace.

  • ponyboy_360

    What up T.
One of my friends was just talking about that film.
    We were talking women
    writer/directors.
I will now watch it this Sunday.
    I’ve been trying to pimp,
    “Goodnight Mommy”.
    For about a month now.
    Sorry for the late reply.
    Gotta catch,
    “American Mistress” tonight,
    instead of tomorrow.
    Peace bud.
