This week, the gang reviews Vacation and Irrational Man. Zissou discusses his strange side effect from giving blood, Chris condemns democracy, and Walden Pond drunkenly finds himself with an expensive hotel suite for the weekend.

  • Tarmac492.1

This sounds like fun. Downloading for a listen tonight in the drunk tank.

  • Irrational Zissou

It’s lucky we did this before I saw the True Detective finale because it would’ve been a long rant otherwise.

  • Irrational Zissou

I will admit that there is a shameful lack of Ramsey Lewis playing during this episode.

  • Irrational Zissou

I just dance in my car to Ramsey Lewis these days.

  • Irrational Zissou

    I’m very cool.

  • Irrational Zissou

Is Mistress America going wide this week or limited?

  • Abe

Gone Girl is the scariest movie ever made.

  • Irrational Zissou

    You must be married.

  • Irrational Zissou

My dream is to somehow coax Willard into doing a secret interview one of these weeks.

  • Irrational Zissou

Trying to be mean to Sagamanus on his F4 review but he’s AWOL

  • Abe

    Do it!

  • Abe

I think Tim’s punishment/reward is a short appearance on the show.

  • Don Francisco’s Zissou

    Our door is always open.

  • Don Francisco’s Zissou

I’ve got to buy some nice suits and hair gel first.

  • Abe

    Coffee is for closers.

  • Abe

If Walden Pond’s info got out.

  • Don Francisco’s Zissou

    He may never recover.

  • Don Francisco’s Zissou

You know what’s underrated? Diane Keaton’s performance in Love and Death. She blows me away every time.

  • Don Francisco’s Zissou

I think she and Woody should star together in his Amazon series.

  • Abe

I have never gotten around to that one.

  • Don Francisco’s Zissou

Sooo funny. Also sort of more impressive in the filmmaking than Sleeper or Bananas. You can see him reaching for something more.

  • Abe

    How so?

  • Don Francisco’s Zissou

I guess I shouldn’t push my luck on the topic of Sleeper, should I? We’ll get cancelled.

  • Abe

I’m wrong pretty much every hour of everyday. I don’t mind.

  • Don Francisco’s Zissou

I recently rewatched it after you brought it up. Bananas and Sleeper are relentlessly silly but I sort of get desensitized watching them. Love and Death starts to incorporate more philosophy and a more inventive sense of filmmaking. The camerawork is less inspired by silent movies and more by his European idols. It feels like he was ready to move onto something that wasn’t so reliant on laughs.

  • Tarmac492.1

You must have a big car.

  • Don Francisco’s Zissou

It’s not the size of the car it’s what you do with it

  • Abe

    You’re cancelled.

  • Abe

But you don’t like silly Allen at all. You’re not a big Tiger Lilly fan at all either, right?

  • Tarmac492.1

I liked the one with the big booby.

  • Abe

And, I think Peach’s punishment for losing the poll should be another appearance on the show.

  • Tarmac492.1

“Reggie Jackson gets paid a million dollars to strike out.’ My first little league coach said that to us when we got down for striking out. I never forgot it because it is pretty much useful in any walk of life. And yes I am old as a million dollars was once a ton of coin in baseball.

  • Abe

I remember Dan Patrick telling a story of Deon showing him and Emmitt Smith his closet. Patrick said it looked like a Macy’s. Emmitt turned to Patrick and said, this is baseball money.

  • Don Francisco’s Zissou

It’s silly but not one of my favorites. I think A Midsummer’s Night Sex Comedy was great.

  • Don Francisco’s Zissou

    Deal.

  • Tarmac492.1

Bullets over Broadway? Fairly silly but a great comedy.

  • Abe

    I believe in you Shelley

  • Abe

Man, I thought that was overrated! Like Hollywood was desperate to embrace Woody again.

  • Don Francisco’s Zissou

I’m afraid I have to agree with Abe on that one. Mighty Aphrodite was his funniest of the 90s I think.

  • Tarmac492.1

I enjoyed that and Deconstructing Harry from that period.

  • Tarmac492.1

See, I liked that ok, but thought it was a tad overrated.

  • Don Francisco’s Zissou

What’s your stance on Shadows and Fog? I remember being weirded out by it and should probably watch it again.

  • Tarmac492.1

Lets all three of us rewatch and beat the shit out of each other on a podcast?

  • Don Francisco’s Zissou

    Where do I sign?

  • Tarmac492.1

    Never caught that one.

  • Don Francisco’s Zissou

Sweet and Lowdown was the hardest to sit through I think. Maybe because I was just watching it on DVD but oh man I stopped that one like 10 times to go do other things before making it to the end.

  • Abe

    Yeah I’m down.

  • Tim R.R. Something

Flattering but my voice is nasal and my opinions worse.

  • Tim R.R. Something

I missed the part where I won. I admit to voting several times.

  • Tim R.R. Something

All through it my wife would be shouting; “Who are you talking to?”

  • Tim R.R. Something

I suggest some FF talk next week, how it fits into your theories about the superhero movie trajectory.

  • Don Francisco’s Zissou

    Oh well then Peach wins.

  • Don Francisco’s Zissou

    Comedy gold, though.

  • Tarmac492.1

I liked “he writes in an obsolete vernacular.” The last two words are very cool.

  • Tarmac492.1

    very King of Comedy.

  • Tarmac492.1

    Fucking Don Michael Paul????

  • ponyboy_360

Listening to this after I watch the
    finale of “TD2” again.
    The second time was better.
We’ll see if three times a charm.
    I see “Jackie Brown”.
    “Irrational Man”.
    “True Detective”.
    Peach vs. Tim.
    Sounds like a good show.
    Cheers.

  • ponyboy_360

    Listening now.
    This a perfect gif.
For whoever hasn’t seen the original “Vacation”.
Couldn’t make out who hasn’t seen it.
    Classic.

  • ponyboy_360

    “Standard Gabriel”=Oscar Isaac.

  • ponyboy_360

    “It Follows”.
    Has a great commentary.
If you dug it that much, I urge you to own it.
    The camera work.
The slow pans & extended long takes.
    Could be perceived as “It”.
    So they say.
    As I said before.
It looked like a PTA directed low budget film.
    Cinematography, stellar.
They stated that it wasn’t supposed to be a straight up “horror”.
    More atmosphere & dread.
    Good list so far.
    “Ex_Machina” is fantastic.
    5, 4 , 3.
Have to catch, “Irrational Man”, definitely.
1, “While We’re Young” was definitely worth the trip to the theatre.
Like to listen to what people have seen in the theatre.

  • Tim R.R. Something

    I didn’t say who I voted for.

  • ponyboy_360

    I loved Penn in that.
    Owner for me.

  • ponyboy_360

    American politics.
    Zzzzzzzzzzz.
    Sorry.
    46 minutes in.

  • ponyboy_360

    Tim’s comments are all winners.

  • ponyboy_360

Dan & you need to do a
    “True Detective 2” podcast.
I enjoy both your points of view on this
    Season.
    Matthew Vaughn……
    “Kingsman” is fucking GREAT FUN!!!!!
    Watch it!!!!

  • ponyboy_360

    The “Candyland” segment.
Was THE ONLY redeeming part of
    “Django”.
    “Jackie Brown” is a CLASSIC.
    Oh, I LOVE “Death Proof”.
    “Stunt Man Mike”!
    His car.
    The STUNTS.
    FULL ON CAR AWESOMENESS!!!!
Russell getting the SHIT kicked out of him at the end.
“Death Proof” is fucking awesome EVERY
    time I watch it.
    One of my guilty pleasures.
    No harm, no foul.

  • ponyboy_360

Fun episode Ziss & the VL crew!

  • Been so fucking busy this week, that only now I can unravel the backlog of listening the podcasts.

  • “Anthony Bourdain of podcasters”?

Nice. I wonder who would be the Gordon Ramsay of podcasters

  • I don’t remember the rating of “Vegas Vacation”, but I remember it being a piece of shit.

  • I had to think, and I haven’t even seen 5 films from 2015 yet.

  • Oh, my bad . I’ve seen 7. The good ones of those would be “Fury Road” & “Kingsman”

  • Someone still manages to sneak into a theater in this day and age? Smells like the ticket seller fuck-up to me…

  • Not very encouraging if someone ask you “are you dying?”, while you’re giving blood

  • “Layer Cake” was a damn good movie

  • Abe

I agree. Death Proof is a very underrated flick.

  • Abe

    It’s you.

  • I’ve stayed off from the f-bombs lately

  • Abe

But your sarcastic ass says “fuck you” in so many different ways.

  • True

  • ponyboy_360

    So was,
    “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”

  • Abe

    No shit?

  • ponyboy_360

    I love it.
    No apologies.
    I especially love when Russell
    cries like a bitch.
While getting his ass handed to him.
    Makes me laugh EVERY time!
    Cheers Abe.

  • ponyboy_360

    Yessir.
I went by myself when my friend couldn’t make it to
    “SOC” on Friday.
    I’m a Guy Ritchie fan.
    It really was a blast.
I’d recommend a visit to the theatre.
    Definitely.

  • Abe

The first time I saw it I found Zoe unlikable to start, but she becomes such a fun badass.

  • Abe

Well I’ll check it out! I have kinda retired from going to the theater.

  • ponyboy_360

    Matthew Vaughn & Guy Ritchie.
    Are damn good filmmakers.
    The commentary for
    “Lock, Stock….” is great.
    They’ve been friends for ages.
I love how Vaughn went out on his own & is now maybe even more successful than Ritchie.
I love Guy Ritchie, so he has a slight lead.
If I were to choose a favourite.

  • ponyboy_360

Both are worth the cash to make the trip to the theatre.
    In my opinion.
    Cheers.

  • ponyboy_360

    Yeah, agreed.
Some of the acting is weak.
But I LOVE the drive-in vibe about it.
The insanity of Zoë’s stunts is off the charts!
Eli Roth can’t act for shit.
But he just cast my friends niece in his next film.
So I put away my hate for him.
The snap from B & W to colour, love it.
    “Down In Mexico” lap dance!
    Russell is fantastic.
    Full on guilty pleasure.

  • Well, Ritchie did the ultimate Bad Career Move and became “Mr. Madonna” for a while there – and kinda lost all of his credibility for a while.

  • ponyboy_360

    True.
    I hated that.
Madonna seemed to want to keep him on a leash.
Glad he dropped that dead weight.

  • The only good thing that came out of that was the BMW Short Film, where he basically mishandles her the entirety of the film.

  • ponyboy_360

    Very true.
I always thought that was intentional.
    I hope it was.
I gotta go to the dog park
    homie.
    Have a good Sunday.
    Peace IAB.

  • Second that
