Intro: Sasha Perl-Raver

Sasha talks about her best interview, working at FX, and shows a blatant disregard for FedEx.

Topic One: The “G” Word

Cable networks such as AMC and FX are pushing the violence, language and sexual envelope. Is this enhancing story telling or is a shock value gimmick?

Topic Two: Appropriate Audiences Approve of the Following Preview?

Teasers, trailers, extended trailers, and TV spots. Is this necessary or is this taking away from the movie going experience?

Topic Three: Sitting in the Dark With Strangers

With HD, 4K, 3D, Blu-ray, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and of course FX Movie Download. Is staying in comparable to going to the theater?

Over/Under

Hunger Games
Sons of Anarchy
Beauty Pageants
FX

The Supernaughts

  • Tim something

Indiana: Too bad the Supernaughts don’t know you the way I do, Belloq.
Belloq: Yes, too bad. You could warn them… if only you spoke Supernaught.

  • FX is the channel that broadcasts AHS?

  • goes over my head

  • The fact alone that Dennis Franz’ ass was a controversy is ridiculous.

  • It really depends on the show. But I think the gratuitousness is not a bad sign. The makers are just trying how far they can go- it’s the “adolescent phase”.
It will be more balanced in a few years.

  • I don’t mind the trailers- but all the “clips” they are releasing afterwards are desperate.

  • Some trailers are really bad- you can make up the story in your head.

  • But the ridiculous fear of spoilers is the opposite extreme- nobody reads my reviews of recent movies, no matter how much I emphasize that they are spoiler-free.

  • it is

  • It’s hard to get through with promotion if people are not that interested in movies- everyone has and adblocker or changes the channel when commercials are one. So most people just get a fragment of the promotion.
But people who are interested necessarily get the whole enchilada.

  • Too many websites promoting the same things- OH YES

  • My last three theatre-going experiences were awful. The problem is that film became a throwaway product.

  • Hey, I read your review, Scott!

  • Could not sit through Hunger Games.

  • Never watched Sons of Anarchy.

  • FX is rated just right. They made AHS, which I love, but they also made Nip/Tuck. Blah

  • Too bad about Interstellar. I was on the fence if this would be turn out good or bad.

  • Those directors need some strong film-versed producers. But they don’t exist anymore. The producers only listen to the damn marketing experts anymore.

  • A lack of enough good directors also corrupt the ones that there are. Artists need competition and mutual inspiration/criticism.

  • Haha, Peter Jackson and Del Toro, Scott!

  • Nothing about “Tusk” looks good.

  • Excellent show again!

  • Yeah whining again, I know.

  • You are talking about RPGs next time? I am out of my depth.

  • That is one topic and it gets a little heated.

  • Thanks Dee

  • lol, nerds!

  • If you saw his ass Dee…

  • Yes, I really got into that one.

  • It was all over the screen…

  • Antoine R Hicks

    1. No, I don’t think it shock value. It’s freedom of speech. If you don’t like it then change the channel or watch something else until is over. I can understand if such programming was a family network, but not every network is target at families or their kids. We have to grow and move that programming is no longer for recruiting and getting kids hooked on sugar product and hazardous tools or scaring parents.

    2. No, trailers and such make people hype for the movie. It actually shows less than what old trailers from the 70s and 80s. They raise our expectation about the movies. Trailers only show 2 minutes worth of montage clips and half of those pictures don’t make it to release.

    3. I think in a few more decades we won’t be going to the theater unless it’s being done out of nostalgia. Theatrical Releases starting to come to cable and dvd faster than they did in the past. It use to take a year before a TR movie would end up on HBO or Cinemax. Not it takes less than 5 to 8 months after it released. I imagine in the future, it will take 2 to 4 months for TR to land on TV. It also doesn’t help that people are work more than they did in the past so I feel TR won’t last as time goes on.

  • Tim something

They had to speed it up, the prates were eating up the market.

  • Antoine R Hicks

    Yes, sir.

  • Antoine R Hicks

    Very much so.

  • Tim something

You’re a fortunate woman: people used to have to dress up as vampires to do what you do.

  • Tim something

15 years ago Renee Zellweger came to Burlington to film Me, Myself and Irene: she singlehandedly caused a drug shortage.

  • Tim something

Barbara Walters is the Gandalf of Feminism.

  • Tim something

Sasha you don’t talk about your vagina and I won’t talk about my dick. Deal?

  • So, Interstellar…… Its long ey. Could it be knocked from the top spot by FOXCATCHER or DUMB and DUMBER TO on its second weekend….

  • Tim something

Rhetorical question. What does it say about our culture that you can’t broadcast people having sex (explicitly) but you can show a satanic clown knifing people in the chest?

  • Tim something

Trailers: I agree-do not show me the entire film in two minutes.

  • Tim something

RJD : They’re selling. Good point, selling not just the film, but also the merchandise, the website hits with associated ad placement.

  • Sex is gratuitous: the clown scene is practically a PSA.

  • Tim something

Interstellar is pretentious trash? Color me shocked.

  • Tim something

    You are pro clown?

  • No man! The scene is a warning!

  • Tim something

Out of Order! This was a rhetorical question. Sit down sir.

  • Tim something

How are you guys getting these guests? You have connections or are you cold calling?

  • Tim something

Another problem with these big visual spectacle films is that they don’t translate well to our TV’s.

  • Dan mcGuffey was pretty much a cold call-I followed him on twitter and asked.Joe and Christine are friends of mine. We all know Jordan, and the others are people Dio knows.

  • On topic 1: The question, in my mind, isn’t if show runners should be allowed to create shocking moments (of course they should be allowed), but whether that was good for story telling or not. Is it a cheap gimmick?

  • Demagog Dog

    Rocket-propelled grenades? I’m in!

  • Demagog Dog

    I enjoyed myself

  • But did you enjoy the movie?

  • Slothrop

Ok. Just poured myself a glass of Woodford Reserve. Time to listen to the Supernaughts!

  • Slothrop

Wow! You kids keep getting real guests! Nice work!

  • Slothrop

Chicks who eat burritos are so fucking hot!

  • Slothrop

Lily Tomlin is a legend. She never gets the credit she deserves.

  • Slothrop

    My penis enhances my arguments.

  • Slothrop

Fuck Interstellar. Don’t go see it.

  • Slothrop

Warrior really is great. I don’t even like MMA, but the movie is thoroughly enjoyable. Check it out.

  • Slothrop

Everything is sacred. Nothing is profane. You can never push things too far.

  • Slothrop

Audiences are not sophisticated. They queue up to see pig slop every weekend.

  • Slothrop

Shows that offend Sloth: Jersey Shore. American Idol. Duck Dynasty.

  • Slothrop

    Thanks HBO! Sloth loves boobs!

  • Slothrop

They show too much in the trailers these days. They often ruin the movies.

  • Slothrop

Also, they start pimping movies several years in advance now. By the time the flicks come out, I’m sick of hearing about. It’s too damn much.

  • Slothrop

Spoilers do not exist. Only whiny children bring up spoilers.

  • Slothrop

Let’s all agree to stop going to the theater. There’s simply no point anymore.

  • Slothrop

They do it to get the popcorn-munchers through the doors.

  • Slothrop

Hold up. Ben Affleck is Batman!?!?!

  • Slothrop

I used to love going to the theater, but these days I’d rather just stay home and watch movies in my living room. Movies that play at the theater are little more than amusement park rides.

  • Slothrop

Paying for parking at the movies! What?!?!?

  • Slothrop

The theaters here are no longer even equipped to play films. They no longer offer anything special.

  • Slothrop

People who use their phones at the theater should be thrown in jail.

  • Slothrop

I no longer visit the theater. The desire is gone. I have better sound in my house and I don’t have to deal with the bullshit.

  • Slothrop

Those smaller movies could find their way to local theaters if we could get rid of all these fucking “tentpoles”.

  • Slothrop

I’m not driving 5 hours to see a movie. That’s terribly inconvenient.

  • Slothrop

Gilliam is a great director. Fistcrunch needs to shut his mouth.

  • Slothrop

Hunger Games: Rated just fine. They’re decent movies.

  • Slothrop

    Harry Potter makes me sleepy.

  • Slothrop

Dio!!!! That shit is clutch! Keep pimping film production in Georgia.

  • Slothrop

Sons of Anarchy: Never seen it. Most likely never will. Not really into biker gangs.

  • Slothrop

    Beauty Pageants: OVER

  • Slothrop

Those child pageants are just creepy.

  • Slothrop

    FX: OVER

Sloth does not have cable. Cable (and all related networks) are over-rated. Who wants to pay for cable, then have to sit through all those fucking commercials. It’s an outdated form of entertainment.

  • Slothrop

Every time I listen, the guest wins. I think this show is rigged.

  • Slothrop

None of Nolan’s movies make sense. He is a terrible director.

  • Slothrop

The length is unconscionable. You can’t expect people to sit still that long.

  • Slothrop

Let’s be honest. Nolan has always been bad. He tricked the American public.

  • Slothrop

    It’s insulting!!!

  • Slothrop

I’m pissed too, Sasha! I’ll just stay home and watch Moon again.

  • Slothrop

Weaker than Inception? Is that possible?

  • Slothrop

Money kills creativity. Give the great filmmakers less money.

  • Slothrop

Insomnia pales in comparison to the original.

  • Slothrop

You heard it! Nolan is a Douchebag!

  • Slothrop

    I love this Sasha lady.

  • yea who wants after credit scenes ? besides everyone ?

  • Slothrop

    Yes. Watch Deadwood.

  • Slothrop

Not me. Marvel is just fucking with you. You sit through 12 minutes of credits for a 45 second stinger? Not worth it. You could already be home with a beer in your hand.

  • they have some really good shows. i think youd love THE AMERICANS and JUSTIFIED

  • Slothrop

I watch shows. Justified is great. But Cable is an inconvenient way of watching. You have to watch when it’s on. And you have to sit through commercials for tampons and penis pills. There are better ways of watching tv.

  • Slothrop

For a show that’s so new, you guys really deliver. The Supernaughts are here to stay!

  • Remember, she’s in LA. 😛

  • THANKS MANG

  • INsomnia is the only film of his I truly get into, mostly because he had almost nothing to do with the script.

  • Slothrop

I probably would have enjoyed it if I wasn’t familiar with the original film.

  • Slothrop

Nip/Tuck is a good guilty pleasure. Pure sleaze.

  • oh i agree cable is in TROUBLE netflix AND AMAZON AND HULU ARE KICKING ASS

  • THATS MY MAKE TIME !!!

  • THATS GREAT

    i got it

    iiiiiiiiiiiiindy

  • I was and still enjoyed it.

  • Thanks! We love doing it, and try to get the best guests we can.

  • Slothrop

This week’s guest was great. Her rant about Nolan/Interstellar made my day.

  • her rant about women made my day

  • when they mentioned that the ppl they were killing were just phantoms … ughhhh so why do i fucking care ???

  • EVERYBODY likes John Wick it seems. I NEED to see it.

  • The Warrior needs more love – great movie

  • Nick Nolte is an icon

  • TV is not gratuitous – it just has evolved into what it is now.

  • The original trailer for the Shining is STILL one of the best trailers out there – tells all about the mood, and NOTHING about the plot. Who the hell wants 60 different teasers/trailers/spots?

  • Greatness. Right there:
    http://youtu.be/3b726feAhdU

  • I have for the most part just switched into my home theater. Not so much because of the movies, but because of the moronic teenagers who turn the theaters into their own personal chatrooms.

  • Hunger Games = overrated. Battle Royale already did that waaaay better. I’m fed up with the YA novel adaptations

  • Never seen an episode of SoA

  • Moon is one of my favourite films of the 2000’s

  • Speaking of getting too much money – I worry about Duncan Jones and this Warcraft movie…

  • Good show again

  • Tim something

    He must be their dealer?

  • Tim something

    PT Barnum knew that.

  • Tim something

    Nice spoiler, ASSHOLES!

  • Scott looks like a boss on that new photo, btw.

  • Meet the new boss

  • Battle royal

  • Nice

  • Yes you do

  • Slothrop

Friends don’t let friends watch Keanu Reeves movies.

  • Tim something

WHERE THE FUCK IS EPISODE TEN?
    nevermind

  • i like your avatar again

  • Slothrop

    It changes constantly.

  • I AM GOING TO START WATCHING THAT SHOW FOR HER ALONE

    shes easy on the eyes

  • Slothrop

    I haven’t seen a single episode.

  • Godzilla Fanboy

Fuck, thank you for saying that, Sasha. Finally got a point about the media depiction of women.

  • Godzilla Fanboy

Is that why you made a fuss about V.D. that day, Scott?

  • Godzilla Fanboy

    Hunger Games is probably okay.

  • Godzilla Fanboy

    Sons of Anarchy is overrated.

  • Godzilla Fanboy

    Beauty pageants are overrated.

  • Godzilla Fanboy

Nah, I’d rather not find out about Sasha. I hate FX Download and I wish I could fast forward through those bits when I’m watching a movie on demand.

  • The Willard

This was great. Sasha is a great speaker. I don’t agree with her at all about Interstellar though.

  • CurseofZodLovesMaude

I need to be a guest- now…. have your people call my people…. seriously.

  • CurseofZodLovesMaude

It’s scuzzy biker gangs… nope. Will never watch it either.

  • CurseofZodLovesMaude

Not missing anything. It’s scummy bikers fighting bigger scumbags… what fun!

  • CurseofZodLovesMaude

    20 minutes for me…

  • CurseofZodLovesMaude

    Just download them… no commercials.

  • Yes it was lol.

  • From what I heard from people who saw a clip at BlizzCon, it’s not only fucking amazing looking, but it puts LotR to shame.

  • TV is also still constrained by what they can show/say without getting fined by the FCC, so it’s not as easy to be gratuitous with sex and violence.

  • thanks for listening and the support,., nolan divides ppl for some reason. I will see it no matter what because … Matt

  • my x is the exact same way. she HATED the behind the scenes stuff, and i LOVE it

  • the tech has advanced so much that the effects could really make LOTR look bad. add that with the paradigm shift due in part to GOT ( not much diff than the shift we saw in superhero films after ironman and the dark knight ) and the amazing cast he has to work with it could be somethign special. Remeber when they announced it, it was after TSR announced a new D&D FILM. hows that coming along ?

  • 575-578-1118
leave a rant on the hotline !

  • Phoned in “rants” are going to get more exposure very soon.

  • do we have a new one ? did Nick call again ?

  • Godzilla Fanboy

I love behind the scenes. But the hosts are probably not the best folks to deliver it to me.

  • They handcuff her. Her co host is a hipster doof and she’s ten times charismatic I get interviews (most on you tube) and electric in the debate. But don’t take my weeks for it. Hmm

  • It’s an atempt to trip the guest into a rant… maybe.

  • In Soviet Russia, Interstellar fucks you.

  • You should be shocked, because it isn’t. What0’s shocking is that some people would think so. aparently for some, they can’t understand the difference between pretentious and smart.
    Prometheus: pretentious.
    Interstellar: smart.
The difference is simple: the pretentious can’t keep up.

  • The original is better, but not by that much. I still prefer the original.

  • Weaker then utter excelency? Very common.

  • From what i heard in this podcast, i can tell that theater audiences are far more quiet and behaved in my country compared to The States.

  • Asi, get over to episode 11. They’re all over it right now.

  • Thanks for the heads up. By the way, i have begged Scott to be in one of your podcasts.
I’m glad i didn’t heard your lovely guest bashing INTERSTELLAR live. I would had gone mad saying “what are you talking about??”, specially her complain about not making sense when the movie is actually very scientific accurate.

  • Gravity, Moon and Interstellar are all great. 3 goods do not a bad make.

  • I can’t really agree with the lady about Interstellar. She saw a completly different movie then i saw.

  • HEYMYDAVE

If it was a real look at 1% MC’s this show might have stood a chance but it is anything but. Kurt Sutter is dog shit.

  • HEYMYDAVE

Mel Gibson is a total douchebag. With that exception of the Lethal Weapon franchise and Braveheart, Mel Gibson is totally replaceable and forgettable. Danny Glover is also a talentless weasel. If you don’t believe me, check out his acting chops in Shooter.

  • Rare English Rose

Interstellar is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I adored it. Did you ever write about it, Asi? I’d love to read it if you did.

  • ErnestRister

I saw Interstellar in 70mm IMAX at the San Antonio River Center, and its easily my favorite cinema experience of this decade.

  • ErnestRister

He was great in Conspiracy Theory.

  • ErnestRister

Snow White’s record-breaking box office receipts paid for Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, and Bambi. Box office hits gave Spielberg the clout to make films like Close Encounters, Empire of the Sun, Schindler’s List, etc. Orson Welles would have traded critical acclaim for a box-office hit in a heartbeat, he said it was the most important thing in filmmaking, because hit films give you the opportunity to make more movies, and Welles was hooked on cinema. Welles had carte blanche on Kane, sure didn’t hurt that movie.

  • I intend to, but it would be a long review even by my standars

  • Rare English Rose

    Hope you write it. 🙂
