With this installment of The Soul Hole, we’re going to jam to some love songs and tracks about dirty, filthy sex.
SWEET, SWEET LOVIN’
Soul music is known for having some of the greatest love songs ever recorded. With the abundance of vocal groups in the 60’s, there is absolutely no shortage of pretty sounding ballads. Vocal groups are not the focus here, though. Here are six of my personal favorite love jams that even you heartless, lonely bastards can get down with.
The Escorts – “I Only Have Eyes For You”
Now, here is a fantastic singing group with an interesting story. The Escorts were formed – and made records- in the early 1970’s behind bars in Rahway State Prison back in my home state of New Jersey. Some of you might know Rahway Prison as the setting for the Stallone film, Lock Up.
Anyway, this is a cover of “I Only Have Eyes For You,” a song written for the 1934 film, Dames.
Teddy Pendergrass – “Love T.K.O.”
Seriously, this is what sex grooves are all about. Turn up the bass and feel your naughty bits quiver.
Allen Toussaint – “Soul Sister”
This song is eternally dedicated to the lady in my life. This is a perfect summer song and should be played at high volume while dancing.
Malo – “Suavecito”
This is a beautiful song with a great horn section. One of the members of Malo, Jorge Santana, is the brother of Carlos Santana. I love the guitar riff, the vocals, everything about this song.
Sam Cooke – “I Belong To Your Heart”
This is an unbelievably good song. The way it escalates gives me chills every time I hear it. This is what love songs are all about. It’s too bad Sam Cooke was shot to death wearing nothing but a jacket and his shoes for allegedly attacking a female hotel manager.
Stevie Wonder – “All In Love Is Fair”
Ladies and gentleman……Stevie Wonder.
Stevie Wonder, everybody!
Another common topic in this genre is sex. Some songs are subtle about it, but others don’t give a shit and will get as filthy as the times would allow.
Undisputed Truth – “Poontang”
Here’s a fine song about a man not only getting over his fear of cunnilingus, but how he grew to absolutely love it. He’s not talking about no peanut butter.
Leon Haywood – “I Want’a Do Something Freak To You”
I’m sure most of you will recognize the music as it was sampled for a very popular rap song.
Betty Davis – “He Was A Big Freak”
The wife of Miles Davis, Betty is singing about the joys of role playing and domination.
Isley Brothers – “Between the Sheets”
Here’s another good jam with a popular sample.
Darondo – “Legs”
Darondo’s back with this song about women’s legs and how horny they make him.
James Brown – “Sex Machine (Get On Up)”
Well, I said I wasn’t going to go for James Brown but fuck it, man! Just watch this shit! It’s irresistible.
Alright, that’s all for now. Thanks a lot for listening. In the next installment we’ll check out some socially conscious songs as well as some great instrumentals. Don’t forget to check out Parts 1 & 2 of The Soul Hole!
