Bop’s Best of 2015 Bop’s Best of 2015
Bop recaps his Best and Worst of TV and movies of 2015. Bop’s Best of 2015

2015 is over. There is hoping that 2016 will lead to bigger and better things for all of us. As for last year… It has been a so-so year regarding Hollywood movies, because I can hardly remember a movie that was worth my time. There were definitely TV things that were great this year so at least there was some stuff I enjoyed. Before I start with the good stuff I will go through the so-so and stinker stuff. TV and movie-wise.

So-so

Mad Max: Fury Road

Max Max was so-so. Yeah, visually stunning, but movie-wise I found it pretty boring, so sue me. And they got the title wrong. It should have been called Mad Maxine, because Mad Max was definitely not the main character in the movie.

Power: Season 2

A disappointing season 2 of Power. I expected this show to go to greater heights in season 2, but it took a nosedive. And don’t get me started on the cliffhanger.

Stinkers

Jessica Jones

I had been dying to see this show the first time they announced it. It started out great in the first 2 episodes and then they fucked everything up. I didn’t have anything to do with Krysten Ritter, although I think Dushku should have been Jessica Jones. The writers fucked it up. Thanks to them I don’t need to see Season 2.

The Transporter Refueled

LET ME GET ONE THING STRAIGHT. There is only Transporter and that is Jason Statham. Nobody can replace him. Now when they announced Ed Skrein as The Transporter I was skeptical. If it weren’t for Col Tigh-Fighter telling me to give Ed Skrein a chance I wouldn’t have even watched the movie. So when I finally got my hands on this I was like WTF? Skrein did the best he could, but the movie just sucked. Transporter having a father? I don’t need to see the father of The Transporter in a movie. WHAT IS THIS DISNEY SHIT? 3 women portraying some fake-ass girl power. I DON’T NEED THAT SHIT. The Transporter being saved in his end battle? WHAT IS THAT FUCKING SHIT? Subpar action scenes? WHO DIRECTED THAT FIGHTING SHIT? Need I say more?

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation

I started this movie and with a few minutes I just got tired. I was like :”Why am I watching that shit?” The movie just sucked the energy out of me, so I didn’t finish it. And the worst thing is I don’t like Cruise at all.

Furious 7

This movie should have been called GI Joe vs. M.A.S.K. I might have enjoyed it more. The movie started out cool with some nice action scenes, but when the helicopter started fighting cars I was ready to tap out. The Rock sucked and I don’t need to see him in a Fast And The Furious movie anymore. Statham was definitely the highlight of the movie. He was a great bad buy, but couldn’t save the crap the movie turned into. After the super awesome fifth and sixth movie this was a huge letdown. Doesn’t mean I won’t be back for part 8, though. I will still give this movie series a chance because they turned out quite a few entertaining ones.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

I wish I saved myself from watching this movie in the cinema. That money could have been better spent. The too fast, unwatchable actions scenes, the 3D-crap, the useless farm scene, the way too forced one-liners, the Disney moments, the Black Widow crap, the stupid end battle, a joking Ultron, WTF? Etc etc… 2,5 hours of my life gone for this shit. Will I ever watch Infinity War? Probably not. It’s not as if they are gonna get Thanos right.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Best Movies

Creed

What a surprise movie this was. I expected utter crap and was pleasantly surprised. I thought Stallone sold out by playing Rocky and participating in this crap. The reality was that it wasn’t crap. It was very enjoyable and Stallone was still the Rocky everyone knows and loves.

Straight Outta Compton

I don’t listen to much rap, but I was definitely interested in this biopic. It was much better than I expected and it was one of the few movies I really enjoyed this year.
What else can I say?

The Man From UNCLE

Talk about a surprise hit. I don’t like politics, I don’t like period pieces and spy stuff I haven’t found interesting for years. This fucking movie just put a big smile on my face and I would never have expected that. This movie showed you can still make enjoyable movies.

Ronda Rousey vs Holly Holm

If there was a real-life Rocky movie this was it. I am not a fan of women’s MMA at all. Women doing Taekwondo, Karate, Judo or BJJ are empowering. Women doing MMA are not. Gutsy sure, empowering not. However, Ronda Rousey became a phenomenon in the MMA. I was not a fan of her, but it can’t be denied she was ratings. When she started getting a big head after dismantling her opponents and acting really immature her time had to come sooner or later. Hardly anyone gave Holly Holm a chance. I know I didn’t give her a chance. But what Holly Holm did was like a movie. She was focused, calm and collected and dismantled Ronda piece by piece. It was especially her focus that was just mesmerizing to watch. When she finally dethroned Ronda I know I had seen a masterpiece of dedication. Ronda had been dethroned by a humble woman who proved all her naysayers wrong. And yes, I was one of those naysayers. The best movie of the year by far.

Ronda Rousey vs. Holly Holm

Best TV

Ray Donovan: Season 3

My buddy Stalkeye urged me to give Ray Donovan a chance again, after I quit watching Season 1 after it first got released. He was definitely right. It was worth watching again. Ray Donovan is one of the coolest TV- characters ever and one can only imagine the headaches he suffers. Season 3 was utterly amazing and laid the foundation for more headaches for season 4. I can’t wait.

Lucha Underground

Lucha Underground was the surprise hit of the year for me. It restored my faith in the North-American wrestling scene. For years I have been suffering the subpar product presentation by the WWE. If it weren’t for CM Punk, Sasha Banks, Rusev & Lana and Brock Lesnar I would have seriously quit watching wrestling years ago. But, CM Punk got screwed over and left the WWE, Sasha Banks is not pushed correctly, Rusev & Lana have been neutered and Brock Lesnar only appears from time to time. But something new came around and it was Lucha Underground. In just one season of 40 episodes they introduced more stars than the WWE did in the past 10 years. That was quite the feat and they showed it is possible to make a big amount of stars in a short time. Season 2 of Lucha Underground is coming soon and I can’t wait, because I will see some wrestling again.

Ash vs Evil Dead

If Lucha Underground was the surprise hit in wrestling this year, Ash vs Evil Dead was the surprise hit on TV. I was scared they would really fuck it up, but what they did is kicking serious ass. Bruce Campbell is cool, suave and motherfucking funny. It is as if he had never left. It made me want to watch the movies again. Ash vs Evil Dead is bloody funny, cool and gory. I wonder if some of the new actors knew what they signed up for because they sure are dumped and dirtied up with lots of gory crap. I hope they keep up the quality in Season 2. And if there is one thing that wins my award for funniest scene of the year it’s Ash being thrown against a wall and then falling down in a pool of piss in the toilets. My poor spleen.

Supernatural: Season 11

I might have been complaining about Supernatural here and there and rightfully so. The show was supposed to run for 5 seasons and those five seasons I would put up against any TV show. However, they continued the show and with each season the show’s quality took a nosedive with season 10 being the absolute worst. That was some of the biggest torture seasons I ever saw of any TV show. Yes, Prison Break Season 4- levels of bad or any other TV show- level of bad. But something changed in the season 10 finale. “The Darkness”, the most evil force in the universe, got released. That concept sounded like fun, so it made me curious about season 11. Well, season 11 hit the ball out of the park. 9 episodes in I can safely say this should have been season 6. The writers restored my faith in Supernatural. I never doubted the characters, but I definitely doubted the writers, yet they delivered. If season 11 is the last season, one thing is for sure. Supernatural will finish with a blaze of glory and deservedly so.

Banshee: Season 3

Banshee is the best show on TV right now. Season 3 fired on all cylinders and delivered very compelling television. Great acting, great action and great suspense is what makes this show the bomb.
They set a very high standard for TV shows and I can’t wait for season 4. Unfortunately season 4 will be the last season of this great show. To put some more salt in the wounds season 4 has been postponed until April. I can’t fucking wait to see the conclusion to this TV show and if you are not watching this show you are missing out on something. Don’t let the naysayers tell you the show sucks, because if there is one TV show that definitely doesn’t suck it’s Banshee.

Bop loves all things creative and inspirational. He is a producer in the making, an athlete, a language expert, an action movie aficionado, an advocate of real girl power, and definitely a snarky smark. He might even surprise you with a thing or 2 about movies and TV.

  • CoolHandJuke

Feel like I’ve seen all of 2015’s crap, but I am dying to see Creed and Ash v ED. Mad Max was OK and has a certain fascination, but I think I would have enjoyed it more sans hype…

  • I_am_better

“The Man From UNCLE” was very good indeed – I dunno if it fits on my list, which is turning out to be a “Top Thirteen” anyway

  • Xiphos

    Hmmm…let’s see…

I would move Slightly Annoyed Tour Guide Max into the awful zone just for that shit bird Hardy who was a suck ass Ginger Max.

Jessica Jones into the great zone it’s BY FAR the best thing in Marvel world that I’ve bothered to watch. Killgrave is the best villain they’ve ever had.

Ash v Evil dead is a snorefest for me that goes in So So terrain. It’s the same show every week. I watched Power and thought it was about on par with season 1 So So.

Agree about Banshee, Supernatural and Ray Donovan. I’ve only seen Man from Uncle on the movie list so I’ll agree about that very fun well made flick.

Rousey v Holmes is what happens when a grappler tries to be a striker. So we can put that nonsense to bed about how Rousey is the greatest athlete of all time and one that could beat down anybody male or female. That line of BS was a temporary win for Dana White’s PR monkeys.

  • Tikkanen

Magic Mike XXL is a glaring omission from this list.

  • Tikkanen

I think Rousey v. Holmes is what happens when someone starts believing their own hype and forgets their training. Remember when Mike Tyson started out with good technique, patience, and stunning power? The Rousey loss looked a lot like later Tyson fights where he would lunge wildly trying to score quick knockouts, but leaving himself vulnerable.

  • Best movies?
    Sicario (by far!)
    The Martian
    Ex Machina
    The Revenant
Mad Max Fury Road (the sheer madness of that movie)

  • Xiphos

There was absolutely no reason for Rousey to abandoned her grappling dominance, that admittedly was against substandard completion, to try and straight up fight a chick that has been a boxer and a decent one at that. Dumb game plan on her part. I also agree she did believe in her own hype and it bit her in the ass hard.

  • Bop

Hey, Tikk. 😀 How are you doing, mang? It is great to see you here.

  • Bop

I agree. Rousey believed her own hype. Fact of the matter is that in some of her matches before Holm she left herself way too open, but her opponents didn’t have much striking skill to take advantage of it. Holm was the first with real striking skill that Rousey totally underestimated.

  • Bop

Yeah. What the hell was she thinking by not taking it to the ground? She would have had more chances there.

  • Bop

I forgot to mention, that although the Jessica Jones show immensely disappointed me, Killgrave was definitely the best Marvel villain ever put to film.

Rousey the greatest female athlete of all time is something I would be never call her. What a hype that was. I definitely have a different definition of female athlete than turtleneck White.

  • Bop

Whoever edited my article, thanks. Great idea about putting a picture with the last things mentioned in a category.

  • Xiphos

You should always dance with the one that brung ya.

  • Xiphos

the greatest female athlete is Serena Williams. She is totally dominant

  • Jen ❤️

Absolutely 100% agree Banshee is the best – never seen anything like it….and I doubt anything could measure up for a very long time 😉

  • Stalkeye

LMMFAO You dont play around Brother, Bop!
I definitely agree with Jessica Jones being on the Stink list. Marvel’s Agent Carter is a much better series IMO. I’m looking forward to season two.
Glad I convinced you about checking out the rest of Ray Donovan. This is my answer to Elmore Leonard’s “Get Shorty”. Leib does such a great job in this series that I practically wish he would reprise his role as Sabretooth in the final Wolverine Movie that’s in the works.

    Banshee, without question-excellent!!!

  • Stalkeye

Not feeling Mad Max but yes, the Martian was better than I had expected.

  • Stalkeye

    Looking forward to it.

  • The Martian is the pleasant surprise of the year.

  • Rose-Rey

Got it on my rental list!

  • Rose-Rey

Infinity War will be a lot better than AoU. I have faith in the Russos!

  • Thanks! I changed the first sentence because it was written from the perspective of 2015.

  • Bop

    No problem, Kumpel.

  • Bop

    Bring it on. 😀

  • Bop

I forgot to add Sicario to my list. To me it was so-so. I don’t know what I was supposed to feel during that movie. It couldn’t captivate me much.

  • CoolHandJuke

Is it wrong to want to bang Wendy Williams?

  • You were supposed to feel revolted and dismayed by the situation, especially with what Josh Brolin’s character says why his agency is doing what he does the way they do and how it’s far from an ideal solution but it’s the only possible one.

You’re also supposed to feel in awe that the movie is so damnwell made and also hopeful for Blade Runner 2.

  • Xiphos

Why has the world spent billions maybe even trillions of dollars to save a hydrocephalic douchtard like Matt Damon? How many movies do we have to be subjected to with that premise? Personally i wouldn’t give one plugged nickel for that clown shoes.

  • KilliK

unless CW turns out to be a big pile of shit.

    oh, wait, it’s you…

  • Zed

I don’t think Rousey should be considered an athlete at all. Athletes don’t take extended breaks from training so they can go play movie star.

  • Zed

I had never enjoyed the spectacle of a woman being kicked in the face, but I sure did then.

  • gorgarwilleatyou1

as long as you dont mix her up with wendy o williams

  • Moonbelly

Nice run down. That was a fun read, much to look forward to on television. Seems like it’s always one or the other.

  • Agreed!!!! 🙂

  • Stalkeye

    Let it go.

Sicario was a real sloooooooowww buuuurrrn that didnt catch momentum until the 3rd act. At least QT’s H* had better dialog.

  • The Martian and Interstellar are two of the most accurate SF movies made since 2001. And they are good movies. Sometimes it’s good to be a Sf fan, because every so often we get this gems when we believe Hollywood wouldn’t make them. Me, i always say that realism is always a good thing, it’s a quality.

  • Stalkeye

One of these days, I’ll get to Interstellar.

  • Fun fact about Interstellar: the strangest stuff in the film is actually the most scientifically accurate.
I was once to write a review of the movie, which would address the scientific aspects too, especially the part where people though was fantasy (or plot holes) but is actual real life physics, but i lost that review text right when it was almost finished. I got so depressed over the loss i haven’t yet found the energy to re-write the thing.

  • ErnestRister

I was very moved by Love and Mercy.

  • Looking forward to eventually watching Banshee someday. =)

Also definitely want to check out The Man From UNCLE. I was tempted to see it in theater but decided against it at the last minute.
