The Power of Persuasion The Power of Persuasion
“Did you ever ask yourself: Why?” “What? Did you say something?” “Do you ever ask yourself why we are here? Why we have to... The Power of Persuasion

“Did you ever ask yourself: Why?”

“What? Did you say something?”

“Do you ever ask yourself why we are here? Why we have to do this?”

“We do this because it is our job. It’s what we are supposed to do. It is why we are here.”

“But doesn’t it seem wrong to you? At least sometimes?”

“Wrong? How could it be wrong? The boss ordered it to be done. It has to be done. The end.”

“Well, it just seems wrong to me, that’s all. All of this processing. It just seems some of these poor creatures don’t deserve this.”

“Look, our job isn’t to judge. Our job is to process those that have been judged. You know, it’s lucky for you that you are saying this to me. Someone else might report you and I’ve been around long enough to know that you do not want to be on the boss’s bad side. No more of this nonsense, okay?”

“So many pass through, though. We just process them and then forget them. They can’t go back once we process them, you know. What if there is a mistake?”

“I know they can’t come back. I’ve been doing this a lot longer than you, kid. Luckily there are no mistakes. The boss selects each of them individually and is never, ever, wrong. Never.”

“Look at this one.”

“Stop it. I’ve heard enough. Leave it alone. You are wrong.”

“This one has done nothing to deserve this. It’s not right to process this one I tell you. It’s just not right.”

“Must have done something. We wouldn’t process it otherwise. How many times must I tell you that the boss doesn’t make mistakes?”

“Do you realize that most of these haven’t done anything? Maybe the boss is slipping, is all I’m saying. Too wrapped up in the new Project… It’s just that they can’t come back. I only want what’s best. Maybe if I spoke to the boss-”

“He knows your idea kid, believe me. You can go if you want. I’ll just wait for your replacement.”

“What do you mean?”

“You’ll find out soon enough if you go.”

“Fine… Hey, why don’t you go?”

“That’s funny, I thought you just said that I should go.”

“I did. The boss likes you, will listen to you. The boss respects your input.”

“Right. If I am so liked, why do I only have this unimportant processing position? Besides, I don’t even agree with you.”

“Look, you’re here because it is such an important position. Think of all of the chaos if there was a mistake here. The boss knows you won’t allow that, not to mention looking over me, the new one here, so to speak. You are trusted. That’s why you should go, why it should come from you. If the new project is such a preoccupation, then it is our duty to do everything we can, right? Besides, from what I understand this job has been the same since, well, forever.”

“What good is change? We have it nice the way it is. There is no harm to just doing things the same way they’ve always worked. It doesn’t really matter what happens to them after we process them. I’d rather just leave well enough alone. No, there’s no good in change.”

“I don’t believe what I’m hearing. This is exactly what I’m talking about. Don’t you see? Change means progress! How else can we move forward? I know that the new project is, like, a millennia away, but still. Once it starts this place will be flooded! We need to fix it before it gets out of control here. It will be unbearable then and we’ll never get the boss to listen after that.”

“I just don’t think-”

“Obviously not. Come on. If anybody can persuade the boss, it’s you. Wouldn’t you like a little more control? Think of all the good we could do!”

“Like what?”

“I don’t know. First off, you could be the boss. At least here, anyway. You could make the rules.”

“Well… I don’t know. Maybe I’ll think about it.”

———————————————————-

“Where are you going?”

“Come on, brother! I’ve thought about it long enough. Let’s go!”

“Wait. Now? You can’t go now. You took too long. It’s too late now. We can’t change things now, it won’t do any good now!”

“Enough! You were right, I see that now. Soon the boss will, too. Now either come with me or stay here, but I go!”

“Wait! Stop! Come back! You can’t! Lucifer! Come back!”
