The legendary character actor succumbs to old age. Abe Vigoda 1921-2016

Multiple news sources are now reporting that the legendary character actor Abe Vigoda has passed away.

Vigoda’s daughter, Carol Vigoda Fuchs, told The Associated Press that Vigoda died Tuesday morning in his sleep at Fuchs’ home in Woodland Park, New Jersey. The cause of death was old age. “This man was never sick,” Fuchs said.

I mostly remember Vigoda as the doomed Corleone family soldier Tessio from “The Godfather“, but Vigoda also gained fame for his part as detective Phil Fish in the 1970s TV series “Barney Miller“.

He kept busy after the show, keeping up appearing in TV series and movies, including roles in “Cannonball Run II,” “Look Who’s Talking,” “Joe Versus the Volcano,” “North” and “Law & Order.” See the man’s whole extensive filmography HERE.

Vigoda also gained a lot of new fans later on in his life, with his appearances in “Late Night With David Letterman“ and later on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien.” I have only seen the latter O’Brien ones, but I was always very impressed by Vigoda’s good sense of humor – and comic timing – in those appearances.

Rest in peace, sir. You’ve certainly earned it.

It’s a shame that NBC has tried it’s damnest to erase all of Conan’s material from the web after their breakup. Those Vigoda skits are very hard to find now.
