The nominees for the 2015 Emmy Awards were announced today and one has to wonder if Mad Men will get an obligatory “Thanks for a great series” sweep of the main awards or if the actual best shows will win.

Here’s an overview of the main nominations and some snark added in for free.

Outstanding Drama

2014 Winner: Breaking Bad

2015 Nominees:

  • Better Call Saul
  • Downton Abbey
  • Game of Thrones
  • Homeland
  • House of Cards
  • Mad Men
  • Orange Is the New Black

CommentsA lot of people dumped on Season 3 of OITNB but I loved it. Was it better than Game of Thrones to me? No. But Game of Thrones would be my runner-up to Better Call Saul. Great fracking season.

Outstanding Actor in a Drama

2014 Winner: Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad)

2015 Nominees:

  • Kyle Chandler, Bloodline
  • Jeff Daniels, The Newsroom
  • Jon Hamm, Mad Men
  • Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul
  • Liev Schreiber, Ray Donovan
  • Kevin Spacey, House of Cards

Comments: I’ve never heard of Bloodline. It’s apparently on Netflix and from the creators of Damages.  I’m fine with any of the others winning but my hope is Bob, because, well, see my first comment above.

Outstanding Actress in a Drama

2014 Winner: Julianna Margulies

2015 Nominees:

  • Claire Danes, Homeland
  • Viola Davis, How to Get Away With Murder
  • Taraji P. Henson, Empire
  • Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black
  • Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
  • Robin Wright, House of Cards

Comments: Interesting that no OITNB actresses were nominated here. Then again, not sure if there is a lead on that show. Give it to Viola Davis.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama

2014 Winner: Anna Gunn, Breaking Bad

2015 Nominees:

  • Joanne Froggatt, Downton Abbey
  • Lena Headey, Game of Thrones
  • Emilia Clarke, Game of Thrones
  • Christina Hendricks, Mad Men
  • Uzo Aduba, Orange Is the New Black
  • Christine Baranski, The Good Wife

Comments: Waaaaaaaah? Crazy Eyes gets the nod here? She was great this season for sure but I would almost give the nod to Pennsatucky instead. That said, give the award to Lena.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama

2014 Winner: Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad

2015 Nominees:

  • Jonathan Banks, Better Call Saul
  • Ben Mendelsohn, Bloodline
  • Jim Carter, Downton Abbey
  • Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones
  • Michael Kelly, House of Cards
  • Alan Cumming, The Good Wife

Comments: No discussion here. Jonathan Banks. Jesus… So damn good.

Outstanding Comedy

2014 Winner: Modern Family

2015 Nominees:

  • Louie
  • Modern Family
  • Parks and Recreation
  • Silicon Valley
  • Transparent
  • Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
  • Veep

Comments: I really should watch Louie. So as penance, it should win. But for shows I actually watch, Silicon Valley is my top choice and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt as second.

Outstanding Actress in a Comedy

2014 Winner: Julia Louis-Dreyfus

2015 Nominees:

  • Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
  • Lisa Kudrow, The Comeback
  • Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
  • Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation
  • Amy Schumer, Inside Amy Schumer
  • Lily Tomlin, Grace and Frankie

Comments: I don’t watch any of those shows. So give it Julia again or maybe Amy Schumer just to see the speech.

Outstanding Actor in a Comedy

2014 Winner: Jim Parsons

2015 Nominees:

  • Anthony Anderson, black-ish
  • Louis C.K., Louie
  • Don Cheadle, House of Lies
  • Will Forte, Last Man on Earth
  • Matt LeBlanc, Episodes
  • William H. Macy, Shameless
  • Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent

Comments: Anthony Anderson is solid in black-ish but I do love Louis C.K. so give it to him. No Jim Parsons this year? Hmmmm….

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy

2014 Winner: Allison Janney

2015 Nominees:

  • Niecy Nash, Getting On
  • Julie Bowen, Modern Family
  • Allison Janney, Mom
  • Kate McKinnon, Saturday Night Live
  • Mayim Bialik, The Big Bang Theory
  • Gaby Hoffmann, Transparent
  • Jane Krakowski, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
  • Anna Chlumsky, Veep

Comments: Be very happy here for Niecy because she’s awesome. But Jane was great in Unbreakable so I would give this one to her.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy

2014 Winner: Ty Burrell

2015 Nominees:

  • Andre Braugher, Brooklyn Nine-Nine
  • Adam Driver, Girls
  • Keegan-Michael Key, Key & Peele
  • Ty Burrell, Modern Family
  • Tituss Burgess, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
  • Tony Hale, Veep

Comments: Andre Braugher all the way here.

Snubs/General Comments

  • Thomas Middleditch from Silicon Valley should have gotten a nod for Actor in a Comedy.
  • And for Comedic Actress, would have loved to see Ellie Kemper get a nomination.
  • Freddie Highmore was stellar in Bates Motel this season as was Vera Farmiga.
  • No Vinny D from Daredevil?
  • Interesting that Big Bang Theory didn’t get nominated.
  • No love for SOA or Justified.
  • I’m a fan of Masters of Sex and some “love” here for this show would have been nice.

A lot of love for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and I can’t understand it.

  • It started off very slow and then hit insane, surreal-level comedic levels for me. I was about to write it off after a couple of episodes but glad I didn’t. The last two episodes were bonkers too.

  • Abe

Man it had to have gotten better. Those early episodes were a poor man’s 30 Rock in the last painfully unfunny season.

  • Apart from a few episodes of big bang theory I have not seen a single one of those shows.

  • Tarmac492.1

Just started watching Bloodlines. It is pretty good. Mendelsohn has always been good and I am admiring Kyle Chandler the more I see him. Solid actor. I never watched Friday Night Lights.

  • Tarmac492.1

How long before the world turns on Amy Schumer?

  • Tarmac492.1

I havent watched Louie this year, but the show is actually pretty artistic and it goes down some weird avenues. Cool stuff.

  • Tarmac492.1

I tried watching Transparent and turned it off after the first episode. I was like, umm, nope. No problem with the subject matter, just the execution.

  • CoolHandJuke

until she tries to be too edgy and pisses off whatever hot button PC group has the limelight at the time…

  • CoolHandJuke

i watched this last season of OITNB for that hot piece of tail Ruby Rose. normally i’m not into women that thin, but i’d go gay for her…

  • CoolHandJuke

i haven’t seen any episodes, but do they do the modern family thing and reference it every five minutes instead of just sort of putting it in the background and treating them like humans?

  • CoolHandJuke

the scene in the last episode this season of him dancing with the woman at the civil war photo booth was both absurd and beautiful…

  • FUCK THE MOTHER FUCKING EMMYS

  • OH LOOK NO HANNIBAL AGAIN FUCK THIS SHIT

  • COMPLETELY IGNORES FX COMEDIES AS PER USUAL EAT A BAG OF DICKS YOU CUNTS

  • Stalkeye

No love for Daredevil or SOA? Fuck the Emmys up their snotty Asses!!
Shit at least Penny Dreadful should have gotten a mention. But yeah, Ray Donovan fucking kicks ass!!

  • Isn’t Louie an FX comedy?

  • Yeah, it is, but it’s so drama-like that it never really occurs to me that it’s a comedy.

I’m just pissed that It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia has never been nominated once, for anything. Absolutely criminal. Toss The League in there too.

Both are on FXX now though, not Louie, so and an ‘X’ to my first message.

I’m gonna miss Jaytoyz’s infamous quotes.

    Wherever you are Jaytz, peace!

  • Tarmac492.1

I just remember they seemed to have nice places to live. Really couldnt get into it.

  • ErnestRister

Eaten Alive snubbed?!? For months, a network promises to show a snake swallowing a man, then they air the show, and for 48 minutes they explain how the snake will eat the host, and when the moment comes, after 20 minutes of ads, he wimps out. This masterwork is snubbed? This was the greatest moment in TV history — Moon Landing, SuperBowls, MASH finale — all rubbish compared to the majestic chain-jerking of Eaten Alive!

    Let the protests begin!

  • You know – if that man eaten by the snake was Harry Knowles, it would’ve been the greatest thing ever

  • Except for the snake

  • ErnestRister

Jon Voight was swallowed by an Anaconda, and then later it vomited him out so it could go kill Jennifer Lopez, and Voight was still alive.

These award shows have a bias against giant rainforest predators. Spider from Arachnophobia? NOTHING! Not even a Golden Globe.

  • franks_television

Better Call Saul! Silicon Valley! Nothing for Hannibal?

  • Mr Nick Nightly

It’s my favorite show on tv. It’s had some misses, but even they bring something unique.

  • franks_television

My contention is that he’s jumped the shark.

  • franks_television

Is she funny? I remember seeing some of her stand up a long time ago and it didn’t seem especially outstanding.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

I have to disagree. I think this past season was the best since the second.

  • franks_television

I preferred funny Louie to political activist Louie.

  • Tarmac492.1

I heard her show is decent. Never really heard her stand-up.

  • Tarmac492.1

Need to catch-up. I think he gives me enough for a watch of the latest season.

  • Tarmac492.1

I will take a unique and different misfire over the same old shit any day.

  • A cancellation and a move to Saturdays is what it got. Would have been great if it got nominated after being canned though.

  • Tarmac492.1

I used to look forward to Shark Week. Now, some of those new shows are like bad shark reality TV. The monster shark one from last year???? Oy vay.

  • Tarmac492.1

That would be animal cruelty on the highest level. The smell!!! The smell!!! Oh God the smell!!!

  • Bop

SoA should have gotten some nominations.
Ray Donovan. I gave up after season 1. Did it get better?

  • Stalkeye

    Oh yes, much better! (0:<
Finally caught up to Power and i agree, it's not within the ranks of SOA, Banshee or the Shield, but still a very good series.
(That Tommy is a piece of work and Fiddy's character is a ruthless Mofo.)

  • Bop

Much better? Maybe I should pick it up again then.
The guy playing Tommy is playing himself I think.
Fiddy ‘d better be unmasked soon. 🙂

  • Tarmac492.1

I just started Banshee. Pretty cool stuff. Love the idea.

  • Stalkeye

It’s a damn good series (Bop can also testify with that statement.) and very unapologetic when it comes to showing skin and gratuitous violence. I see it as modern day Grindhouse but smarter. I never got the hype of Justified but Banshee deserves plenty of love too.

  • Stalkeye
  • Tarmac492.1

My friend has been trying to get me to watch for years–now it is available on Prime. I really liked Justified. Modern day western with dialogue that was redneck Shakespeare. Olyphant is a solid, solid leading man and how film stardom has escaped him so far is a mystery to me. I guess some bad decisions by him/agents. Maybe he should stick with TV. I will look forward to some Banshee nudity.

  • Bop

    I am baffled, mang.
