I am very fed up with Hollywood. I really am. I have been for the past 10 years or so, but the past few years are even worse. Time and life are valuable, so if you sit down and take a break you’d better watch something that won’t waste your time nor your life.
Being fed up with Hollywood meant I had to find other movies to watch. Movies that are not necessarily Hollywood made and that don’t need to be in English. I love to watch foreign movies and I would love to cross off every country that makes movies. This time I can cross off Iran with A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night. I qualify it as an Iranian movie, although it was filmed in the USA. The movie is spoken in Farsi and the director and most actors and actresses in it are Iranian. One thing I do know is that the feeling of the movie is definitely not Hollywood.
A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night is a movie about Bad City, a fictional city in Iran. Bad City is a strange place and life is not easy there, but there is a vampire woman roaming the streets at night, who seems to make things better sometimes. Most people are not aware of her, but when they are it’s often too late. What is her purpose in Bad City? Only one way to find out and that is to watch it.
What I liked a lot about the movie is the atmosphere. The movie is filmed in black and white which adds something extra to the atmosphere. The imagery is fascinating and sometimes even breathtaking.
Sheila Vand, who plays the vampire, acts a lot with her eyes. She gives a new spin to vampires and one thing is particularly funny; she uses a skateboard from time to time. That might sound really ridiculous, but in this movie she totally gets away with it. What is also noteworthy is that the movie took me on a journey and that is something that I haven’t felt in a long time with a Hollywood movie.
Want to try something different? Try this movie, because it is another movie that shows that you don’t need millions of dollars to make something entertaining.
