An appreciation of a whacky mini-series by "Sledge Hammer!" creator Alan Spencer. Retro Review : Bullet In The Face (2012)

Did you ever see a TV show and thought it was whacky and quirky? If yes, chances are it has got nothing on the Canadian TV show Bullet In The Face, that I saw a few years ago. This over-the-top crazy show lasted only 6 episodes of half an hour each, but chances are you will never ever see something crazy like this again.

The creator of the show was the creator of Sledge Hammer!, but what he smoked when he created Bullet In The Face, I don’t know. One thing is for sure and that is that I love the show a lot.

The story is about criminal Gunter Vogler, who is German, but also totally insane. The Joker has got nothing on this guy. He and his lovely girlfriend Martine rob a jewelry store, when a cop comes barging in. Gunter and the cop shoot each other. Gunter wakes up in a hospital. A female police commissioner tells him he works for the cops now. The problem is that they gave Gunter the face of the police officer he shot. The police commissioner also tells Gunter that Martine shot him in the face. Not the cop. Gunter is now motivated to work for the cops and find Martine among other things. The problem is, he is still totally insane and a loose canon. What follows is 6 episodes of absurd and sometimes outright funny stuff. Gunter is rude, politically incorrect and totally crazy. Don’t expect a super serious show, but a weird out-of-the-box entertaining one. Just get used to the German accent Gunter has when he speaks English.

I had never heard of Max E. Williams, who plays Gunter Vogler, before. If they ever need a Joker in a Batman- movie again, Max E. Williams is the guy.

    Is 2012 retro? Damn, I’m older than I thought…

  • Oh, yeah – you told me about this before. I just always assumed that Alan Spencer made so many millions from “Sledge Hammer!” that he had just retired on some island

  • Bop

Well, maybe he needed another island. 🙂

  • Bop

You are as old as you feel and something I don’t think you feel old.

  • Spinkles ????

I’m still trying to figure out just how hot Jessica Steen really is…????

  • Bop

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

  • Stalkeye

LOL This series sounds like Batshit Fun!

“The story is about criminal Gunter Vogler, who is German, but also totally insane. The Joker has got nothing on this guy” I need to look into this.

  • Spinkles ????

    Good thing!

  • Stalkeye

Y’know Brotha-B, I can see why you dreamcasted Williams as The Joker, but unfortunately the Shitdips at WB went with Marilyn Manson wannabe Jared Leto .

  • CoolHandJuke

I feel up old broads. Does that count?

  • Bop

Ok, because she does have a certain charisma.

  • Bop

I hear you. I am not a fan of the Marilyn Manson look. I don’t even remember ever having seen a movie with Jared Leto. But who knows, maybe he will suprising. But Max E Williams would have killed it.

  • Bop

It is batshit fun. There is definitely some overacting in it from time to time, but if you accept it is batshit you will have an entertaining 6 times 30 minutes.

  • Bop

I want a movie called The Adventures Of Coolhandjuke, damnit.

  • Spinkles ????

She does! I’m into her. Just trying to figure out exactly what it is about her that makes me want to write her creepy letters…????

  • CoolHandJuke

can topless Rosario Dawson play my wife and i play myself?

  • Bop

You need to play yourself, otherwise the movie won’t be a success.

  • Canadian eh? Weird I’ve never heard of it…

    *googles*

Oh, it was on IFC. That’s one station I’ve largely ignored and probably shouldn’t.

  • Savage Brit

IFC really botched this one, as it could have been a hit show and is now selling well on DVD. IFC’s ratings are so low, they can’t even be charted.
