When I started writing this top 10, I didn’t realize how much time it would take. My memory totally left me on what movies I saw from 2000-2015. I do know that in between that period a lot of crap had been released that seriously annoyed the fuck out of me, let alone made me waste my life by seeing it. There were definitely some gems through the years, though so I went to a wiki list of movies released from 2000 to 2015. Of course there were hardly foreign (i.e. non-English) movies on there, but at least I do remember my foreign movies. And what a torture it has been to see how movie quality declined year by year. I always though the decline started about 10 years ago, but after wading through list after list I realized that the decline for me started in 2004. Movies like Euro Trip, Starsky & Hutch, Scooby Doo 2, Taking Lives, Ella Enchanted, Kill Bill 2, Mean Girls, Harry Potter, Napoleon Dynamite, Dodgeball, Spiderman 2, Catwoman, Harold & Kumar Go To The White Castle, Taxi, Lemony Snicket etc etc. And it got worse and worse.
However, I did manage to find some gems and it was hard to cut them down to a top 10. That was some serious cutting there. OK, the movies that didn’t make it but easily could have been top 10 as well are A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, OSS 117 1 and 2, Kiss Of The Dragon, Frequency,The Transporter 1 and 2, The Rundown (a.k.a. Welcome To The Jungle), Get Garter, Constantine, The Devil’s Rejects, 300, John Wick, Fast And Furious 1, Fast And Furious 5, Fast And Furious 6, Martyrs, Frontiers, A L’Interieur, Redirected, Bad Milo, Dead Man’s Shoes, Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer, Pitch Black, Ready To Rumble, Frequency, Bring It On, Bedazzled, Dracula 2000, Super Troopers, Memento, Tomcats, Heartbreakers, Freddy Got Fingered, Rush Hour 2, The Others, Joy Ride, Shallow Hall, Kung Pow, The Mothman Prophecies, The New Guy, Final Destination 2, A Man Apart, The Italian Job, Judge Dredd, The Girl Next Door, Saw, Forbidden Kingdom, Idiocracy, REC, Machete 2, Rampage, Rampage 2, The Purge Anarchy, Dracula Untold, The Man From U.N.C.L.E and the whacky crazy Anuvahood.
So what made the top 10? Well, definitely not a Nicholas Cage, Adam Sandler, Sasha Baron Cohen or Disney movie.
10. The Man From Nowhere (2010)
I fucking love this South-Korean movie. It is one of the few movies that takes more than 2 hours and that kept me glued to the seat. The main character is not someone who looks like a badass, but he definitely is. The story is that Cha Tae-sik is a loner in an apartment. There is this adorable little girl that he takes a liking to. Her mother is not taking care of her really well. The mother gets into trouble and some scumbags kidnap her daughter. So Cha Tae-sik is pissed off and starts to look for her. One detail, he can kick some ass and is a master at knifing the shit out of people. The little girl is cast really well and is not your typical annoying Disney kid you would love to kick into the orbit.
9. Bitch Slap (2009)
Girl power at its best. Sexy, crazy women, gutsy women who don’t mind beating the shit out of each other. A movie for guys for sure. Need I say more? What the fuck are you waiting for? Watch it already.
8. Yamakasi (2001)
This French movie is the movie that introduced parkour, a.k.a. as free running to the world. It is one of the most innovative action movies I ever saw. Especially the rooftop chase is a masterpiece of movie making. But also the Doberman dog escape etc. Not to mention that the main characters in the movie are not actors, but they do a great job. A colorful bunch of people who are top athletes as well. No stinking wirework applied.
7. Bring Me The Head Of The Machinegun Woman (2012)
I have never seen an angel of death being portrayed better than in this endearing and hilarious Chilean movie. The Machine Gun Woman is pissed and she wants revenge. She can kick some ass and shoot guns. Who doesn’t want to see a woman kick ass and shoot guns?
6. Taken (2008)
I never took Liam Neeson as the action guy, but mang, did he win me over in this movie. This movie came out of nowhere when I saw it and I was fucking impressed. After the lack of action movies this movie showed that good action movies can still be made. And Neeson looked like a serious badass. And the scene with the line :”I told you I would find you.” still gives me goosebumps to this day. What an excellent action movie.
5. Shoot Em Up (2007)
This homage to John Woo movies and Bugs Bunny introduced a whole new dimension to gun fights. Clive Owen totally steals the show in this movie full of guns and cannon fodder. I never counted how many people got shot, but mang, did it look artistic and badass. Why this movie never got a sequel is beyond me, but then again, maybe that’s a good think, so they don’t fuck it up. Not a Clive Owen fan at all, but Mr Smith can always return if you ask me.
4. Banlieue-13 (2004)
This awesome French movie took Yamakasi’s parkour and brought it to a whole new level. All done by David Belle. Add to that the martial art skills of Cyril Raffaelli and you have an awesome duo for an action movie. Awesome stunts, athletic performance and suspense. A one of a kind action movie and totally innovative in its own right.
3. Tom Yuum Goong (2005)
When this Thai movie was released I thought it would never be surpassed. The action by Tony Jaa in this movie is out of this world. Tony Jaa became a household name for martial arts fans after Ong-Bank, but in this movie he did even a better job. The x-floors fight is a thing of beauty, but the other action is simply badass. What else can I say?
2. Crank 2 (2009)
Is there a crazier movie than this one? This movie is batshit crazy. Jason Statham is at his best in this movie. Not only that, the energy in this movie is so ADHD and the characters in this movie are so over the top that you would think you are in another dimension. Love the world they shaped in this movie and there is no way in hell they could surpass this in a movie sequel. An innovative movies visually-wise, but also a hilarious action movie by itself. H2O coming up.
1. The Raid : Redemption (2011)
I don’t know what to say that already hasn’t been said about this Indonesian action movie starring Iko Uwais. The amount of crazy action I saw in this movie has yet to be surpassed. Yes, the fights in its sequel were great, but in my opinion they don’t surpass them. This movie set a whole new standard for action movies and showed that with a low budget you can do some serious shit. I am looking forward to The Raid 3 because it will have Iko Uwais vs Tony Jaa. Mr Raid vs Mr Tom Yum Goong. The fights will be out of this world.
