mad amok

Welcome to yet another “episode” of Anime (gone) Amok in which I provide a brief retrospect of the most controversial Anime (Original Video Animations) I have ever seen.

My pick of the litter for this segment, is Mad Bull 34 originally based on a Shueisha’s Young Jump Manga. It is a cult hit and very Batshit Police thriller and comedy (Intentionally and unintentionally. Hahah!). The titular protagonist John “Smiley” Estes is a no nonsense NYC Cop who would often use excessive force i.e. shoot first and won’t even bother to ask questions later. (No surprise there!)

I intentionally watched this OVA in the English dubbed version just for the laughably bad American Voiceovers and it certainly adds more to the Anime.

The first episode begins with Japanese American Rookie Daizaburo “Eddie” Ban joining what is known as the toughest Precinct in New York City.

From there he is assigned as Sleepy’s new partner and thus began the crazy and violent exploits that soon follows. During the first 10 minutes of this episode, you see a bunch of low life thugs attempting to rape some defenseless woman only for Smiley to show up and dispense some “Justice.” Heads get blown apart like a Watermelon projectile way without yelling “Freeze”! (So much for the Miranda act.)

Smiley then pursues a pair of roller skating Hockey Mask wearing robbers after one of them accosts a young blonde woman. After Smiley splatters their heads with a shotgun, Daizaburo tries to comfort the traumatized victim, by putting his finger up her ass as Smiley had suggested!!

Great Balls of....

Great Balls of….

Oh wait, it gets better!!!

When learning that Daizaburo is a virgin, (But not before calling him a “Faggot” – Smh.) Smiley throws him in an empty room full of whores. I can’t complain about the gratuitous nudity but this scene had me laughing my brains out.

During the first half of this ep, you see Smiley taking money from the brothels after fucking the prostitutes.
My first impression, as well as Eddie’s, was “what a piece of shit this guy is.” However, there’s a valid “revelation” of why he commits these unscrupulous acts which gives off the impression that Smiley isn’t such a dickhead after all.

Now on to where things get really fucked up and this involves a deranged pimp named Curtis who wants to control all the brothels in NYC but first he would have to eliminate one major obstacle: Smiley!

The following events are littered with misogyny, goofy dialogue and of course, more senseless gore (the fight between Smiley and Curtis in particular.) And this was just the first episode!

Pimp up, Ho down!

Pimp up, Ho down!

The voice acting is comedy gold especially Curtis’ voiceover.

It’s like some caucasian doing a stereotype of a black man…..actually, it was!!! Daizaburo’s “Brooklyn” accent is what you would expect from community college dropouts. And it shows since most of the women in peril sound like bimbos. At least there’s James Brown’s ending theme.

Who knew Crystal Lake had their own Police Department?

Who knew Crystal Lake had their own Police Department?

Annnnnd speaking of which, why are all the endangered women happen to be blondes for some odd reason???

There must be some kind of fetish going on from the land of the rising sun, I can tell you that much!

During the final episode entitled “Cop Killer,” there’s someone running around in a high tech Predatoresque outfit used for taking out the Po-Po. Now, who’s underneath the suit and why, is just as plausible as the suit itself.

wtf

In a nutshell, Mad Bull 34 without a doubt is a fun watch and should not be taken too seriously since the whole series comes off as an extreme parody of 80’s Cop Buddy Films but with a Hard R-Rating!
