I think the issue isn’t whether Spielberg is right, but what he plans on doing about it. Is he content to sit on his backside while Rome burns? His BFG was one of the most prominent summer examples of the trend. Lucas is retired, and always hated the Hollywood system, so he gets a pass.

There’s an interview with Spielberg in Cannes in the early 80s, obviously trying to be edgy to fit in with Godard and the art house glitterati (it’s an excerpt from a longer Wim Wenders documentary called Room 666, in which many in attendance at the festival, such as Herzog, Fassbinder, and the aforementioned Godard, were interviewed), and saying much the same things. The guy is too much of an insider to take action against these negative trends despite wielding enormous power and influence within the industry, although he’s happy to criticize when there’s no real risk involved and it remains only talk. He perpetuates these attitudes as much as anybody with all the garbage he produces for others, such as the Transformers franchise.

Spielberg is an artist, don’t you get it? an artist. not a whore.

regarding your question about what SS is going to do about the upcoming implosion of HW, which he has prophesied. I think we will see him taking action, IF RP1 bombs. So far, he has been silent about the failure of BFG, but he wont be again if RP1 flops too. He will react to that.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

If SS does that, it’ll give the impression that he’s only looking out for his self-interests instead of being concerned for the state of the industry as a whole based on principle. He’ll be very worried that the blame if going to be pinned on him for the string of box office flops and will want to abdicate responsibility.

A few years ago, I reasoned that RP1 had a chance to be Spielberg’s big blockbuster comeback because the concept taps into the growing video game culture and social media trends but, after Harry Knowles’s relentless and off-putting shilling and the underwhelming BTS photos, I seriously think it could stand a chance of bombing or at least performing very modestly. That would put an end, once and for all, to Spielberg’s still-surviving reputation as a great populist filmmaker – and it’s only hanging on by a thread as it is. His past legacy is secure but his name means nothing to the current generation and, post-Millennium, he’s lost touch with the tastes of moviegoers.

maybe it’s time for him to take a few lessons from his protege JarJar, about how to become popular among the current generation of geeks. hihihi.

That’s an excellent point. If you want to do a piece addressing this, I’ll happily include it in an upcoming episode.
