A Top 10 of favourite video game scores. To be continued. Video Game Jukebox

I don’t think I’ve ever written a piece about my favorite pieces of music from the video game world, although I do find it an interesting area for exploration.

Game music has been lending ambiance, mystery, and texture to gaming since, I suppose, the beginning of the medium itself. What was the first video game for the Atari? I’m not sure and I don’t listen to Atari music but needless to say if you want to hop on YouTube there are various compilations in terms of Atari soundtracks. Very well.

My own knowledge comes mostly from the SNES, Playstation and PC games of the late nineties and early aughts. At least that’s how it started. But recently my interests have branched out and I am discovering that game music has advanced beyond the 8-bit bleeps to encompass a whole range of symphonic music and soundscapes. Yes now I sound like a music critic, to wit: a poser.

Anyway, I still listen to game music quite a bit for some reason.

These days many of my peers are obsessed with things that help them calm down, so ASMR videos are popular, or soothing sounds of rain, wind, what have you. There is a lot of good relaxing music as well that you can turn on hailing from the lands of Azeroth, the street corners of Silent Hill, or the various and flatland worlds of role playing games.

The sheer wealth of material is fairly staggering. For example, there are eight hours of original music for just one World of Warcraft expansion. Think of that! That is a lot of music to listen to, and you can just hit the play button on your computer screen and have something on in your work space or place of residence for an entire working day. Isn’t that wonderful? For those of us who grew up listening to sixty minute movie soundtracks over and over ad nauseum that is just wild. I dig it.

Here are ten pieces of music I’m currently listening to. I will be back soon with ten more.

#10 World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Soundtrack (Full)

    This one is rather sad.

Imagine you’ve been turned into a wolf, and you’re carrying an injured person on your back. Now imagine the rain and darkness the environment shares with you as you try to find someone to help save her injured friend and bring her to the only one that can help – a princess who’s a prisoner in a tower.
