The Shut Up Kids

  • I_am_better

    First!

  • Abe

    You win this round.

  • Stalkeye

    Fuck that Shit!

Wrath of Khan<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Star Trek: TMP

And the 80's Ruled more so than the 90's and not for feelings of "Nostalgia" but innovative concepts within pop culture and of course, there's the Music.
I have been meaning to check out GQ and had no idea that it was "dark" as you guys had mentioned.

  • Dee

Truman Show was originally also darker. #useless trivia

  • Mr Nick Nightly

I wouldn’t say “dark,” but its not without some drama.

  • Dee

It’s a good mix. It looks like a lame family comedy on the surface, but it’s much more than that.

  • Dee

But it’s poking fun at the fans in a loving way.

  • Tim R.R. Something

He’s always one step ahead of us.

  • I_am_better

    And 7-8 hours ahead anyways

  • I_am_better

Was supposed to be a R-rated comedy too, actually

  • Dee

Tim Allen was never been better than here.

  • Stalkeye

“Morgan freeman will do anything for a Paycheck”.

Funny, Asi. I would usually say the same thing about Samuel L. Jackson.

But I prefer Sammy over Morgan anyday. Freeman’s roles plays it too “safe” and he hasn’t been cool since Fast Black, the role that got him noticed in the first place.

  • Tim R.R. Something

Gwen DeMarco: [watching the fans’ reaction to Nesmith] You’ve got to admit, they really do love him.

Tommy Webber: Yeah, almost as much as he loves himself.

  • I_am_better

    His best live-action movie

  • Dee

I forgive him that he ruined Christmas forever.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

A dude I used to work with was browsing around Suncoast (the now mostly defunct home video store), and he decided to pick up “Galaxy Quest” after seeing one of the store’s cardboard displays for it. He couldn’t find any copies, and after asking a clerk for help he was told they were sold out. “Wow,” he said, “It must be a good movie if you sold them all!”

“No,” replied the Suncoast worker, “We only carried 3 copies.”

  • Which isn’t saying much really.

  • I_am_better
  • Dee

    faint praise indeed

  • I_am_better
  • Abe

I’ve heard that from you before.

  • I_am_better
  • I_am_better

    Deja vu

  • As I say in this week’s SN, Tim Allen is a live action Buzz LightYear in GQ.

  • I_am_better

    Deja Vu

  • Deja Vu all over again.

  • I_am_better
  • I_am_better

    “Tasha Yar”….. heh

  • Dee

Best rock monsters in film ever. They were never topped. Never.

  • Dee

    …get it?

  • gorgarwilleatyou1

actually he was pretty good in that arty kung fu movie red belt

  • Fate_Slistcrunch

    Ha, dick.

  • Tim R.R. Something

(completely deadpan) By Grabthar’s Hammer… what a podcast.

  • I_am_better

    I love Shalhoub’s reaction to the wormhole-teleport-thingy
    “That was a helluva thing…”

  • Dee

    Star Trek IV is overrated.

  • I_am_better
  • Dee

Worf’s grampa is already in Star Trek VI. VII was unneeded.

  • Dee

Spock became a walking story device.

  • Dee

Spock “Not really in his” Prime

  • I_am_better

    “Generations” is fuckin’ boring

  • Dee

TMNT must have one of the worst but most hilarious origin stories ever.

  • Dee

Reluctantly agree that they nailed the Turtles.

  • I_am_better
  • Dee

    John Liebesman, robot director.

  • I_am_better

This is sounding so bad, that I guess I gotta see it

  • I_am_better

    More workman than craftsman?

  • Dee

Not sure if it’s the cover name of an algorithm.

  • Dee

Rickman is great, but I have to agree that he phoned it in here and there.

  • I_am_better
  • Dee

I don’t think they changed them into Irish terrorists, just did never mention they are from Germany, as far as I remember. But they acknowledged it in “With a Vengeance”.

  • Fate_Slistcrunch

Well, I trust you here for sure, ha. But I remember reading that somewhere.

  • Fate_Slistcrunch

    Here is what I read:
In the German version the names and backgrounds of the German-born terrorists were changed into English forms (mostly into their British equivalents): Hans Gruber became Jack Gruber, Karl became Charlie, Heinrich turned into Henry etc… the new background depicted them as radical Irish activists having gone freelance and for profit rather than ideals.

  • Dee

Maybe I forgot about it. I have to have a look into it. I remember that Jeremy Irons had a distinct Eastern German regional dialect while Rickman’s German was more nondescript.

  • Dee

Could be I forgot about that! Have not seen the German version in a while. I remember the “Jack” part.

  • Dee

    No 90s bashing please!

  • I_am_better

    Agree

  • Fate_Slistcrunch

Ha, I backtrack a bit but there was so much garbage in the mid 90s…

  • Dee

1995 was a bad example to be honest. Batman Forever, Judge Dredd…

  • Dee

Not the best year in my opinion.

  • Dee

But hey, there was some good stuff too: Se7en, Demon Knight, Before Sunrise, Outbreak, Braveheart, Dead Presidents, Goldeneye

  • Dee

    12 Monkeys

  • Dee

One does not simply walk into New Jersey.

  • I_am_better

In The Mouth of Madness FTW

  • I_am_better

A Night at the Roxbury. 1998

  • Mr Nick Nightly

These examples aren’t helping your case…

  • Mr Nick Nightly

Sometimes the retooling of an origin story makes sense. This was just ludicrous.

  • Tim R.R. Something

    The entire State is paved.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

    Not true!

  • Tim R.R. Something

Gwen DeMarco: (upon seeing the chompers for the first time) Fuck that!!{re-dubbed to “Screw that!” to keep the rating PG)

  • I_am_better
  • I_am_better

Yup. The original line reading can be clearly seen

  • Tim R.R. Something

  • Mr Nick Nightly

  • Tim R.R. Something

The parts that aren’t interstate are all off ramp or mall parking lot.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

    Not true!!!!

  • Tim R.R. Something

    “Khan is…bad,”
    Exactly.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

    That’s primarily northeast NJ.

  • Dee

Outbreak is… just okay. Braveheart did not age well. I stand by the other choices.

  • I_am_better

I’m just reacting to what I heard on the show. I’m OCD in that way

  • Dee

“I have no idea how the plot could move on.” “Let’s make them call Spock and he shall tell them what to do.”

  • Tim R.R. Something

Driving south out of New York: “What’s that smell?”
    WELCOME TO NEW JERSEY

  • Mr Nick Nightly

I was partially joking. 12 Monkeys, Demon Knight, Dead Presidents – all aces.

  • Dee

    And I was partially reaching.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

    The smell is love.

  • I_am_better

Jack Gruber, lol. That’s a thoroughly irish name. How about Jack O’Gruber?

  • Tim R.R. Something

Spock should at least warn Kirk about all that space VD he is going to get.

  • Dee

“Stay away from the blue chicks! Green and red are okay, but never blue.”

  • I_am_better

“The Blue chicks are for Sam Worthington!”

  • Tim R.R. Something

“Damn it Jim I’m a Doctor not a pimp. Keep it in your pants”

  • Of all the photos to try to disprove, that?

  • Austrians have no love for Germany?

  • I_am_better

It’s actually a nice photo. The sun really brings out the yellow of methane.

    Just kidding

  • No, the fucking 80s adoration thing is really uncontrollable nostalgia trips that got out of hand. And TMP is the best ST movie ever, period. Nobody denies the qualities of WOK, but to name it the best ST movie is now more an act of dogmatic, an act of faith then a true assessment of quality. And i’m extremely critical of dogmatism in the geekdom.

  • The volcanic ash has a nice hue of gold yellow.

  • *gaining courage to listen to the podcast*

  • Stalkeye

Wrong Asi. Not dogma, just the facts, old Friend.

The 80’s provided further momentum of High Concept films and television shows. especially compared to the 90’s.
The 70’s produced some amazing stuff as well, and would the love for Star wars, Godfather, Exorcist, Grindhouse/Blaxploitation films be seen as “nostalgic”? No, it’s giving credit where credit is due.

*0’s also produced the awesome WOK, which in fact, is the greatest ST Movie of the franchise. With a slid revenge plot, Drama, action and of course, Pathos, this puts it way above TMP which IMO comes off a bit like a 2001 wannabe but we all know that TMP cant hold a candle to Kubrick’s classic.

  • HEYMYDAVE

I haven’t seen Galaxy Quest but I can say I would have agreed with Harold Ramis, at the time. Home Improvement was funny enough as sitcoms go. No shame in your game, Dan.

Here’s the Star Trek Vegas-Con ranking:

    1. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
    2. Star Trek: First Contact
    3. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
    4. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
    5. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
    6. Star Trek (2009)
    7. Galaxy Quest
    8. Star Trek: Generations
    9. Star Trek: The Motion Picture
    10. Star Trek: Nemesis
    11. Star Trek: Insurrection
    12. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
    13. Star Trek: Into Darkness

  • ErnestRister

Don’t go in the Tower. There’s an old guy in there wearing a white bathrobe, spending all his time plotting world domination while talking to a bowling ball.

  • ErnestRister

Tony Salhoub’s character is stoned the entire movie. Really didn’t catch it the first time I saw it.

  • HEYMYDAVE

If we take anything away from this episode, The Shut Up Kids loved talking about Galaxy Quest. Can’t hate on that.
    http://youtu.be/zx_zAuP21DM

  • Fate_Slistcrunch

Okay, good. I mixed up First Contact and Generations then. First Contact is great.

  • Fate_Slistcrunch

    It’s FRIED RICE you plick!

  • ErnestRister

I’m pretty much down with this list, but I liked The Motion Picture a bit more. Well, the director’s cut, anyway.

  • HEYMYDAVE

Dan, you laughed harder than Jeff Garlin telling an anecdote about anything to anyone. I though you might pass out.

  • ErnestRister

I saw a terrible movie called The Corruptor a few weeks before I saw LW4, and the same actor playing Uncle Benny in LW4 also played a character named Uncle Benny in the Corruptor.

  • Fate_Slistcrunch

I think Asi wins the award for the laughing in this episode but yes, doing this podcast makes me giddy beyond all belief and I cannot contain it.

  • Fate_Slistcrunch

I think I would swap Motion Picture and IV as a start. I mean, I liked IV and its a fan favorite list but its not a terribly good movie while Motion Picture is.

  • There’s far more worst subjects.

  • Abrams Trek should trade places with Star Trek V and TMP needs to be number one and IV needs to go below. Otherwise, not too shabby.

  • ErnestRister

I might movie it to second and just push everything else down. Lots of love for that movie’s visual and music.

  • ErnestRister

Daily Variety just trashed the hell out of George Lucas’ “Strange Magic”. “An insipid byproduct of the Disney-Lucasfilm merger…this noisy, unappealing children’s fantasy fails to distinguish itself among January’s many, many reasons to steer clear of the multiplex.”

  • Tim R.R. Something

    ouch

  • ErnestRister

The Hollywood Reporter not as nasty, but still negative. “A shrill, garish hodgepodge of familiar elements from other animated vehicles (most evidently 2013’s Epic), there’s virtually nothing about this forced, fractured fairy tale that feels remotely fresh or involving…..With Gary Rydstrom’s frenetic direction attempting to cover for that mere suggestion of a script he co-wrote with David Berenbaum and Irene Mecchi (Lucas receives story credit), it very quickly becomes apparent that there’s simply no “there” there. Stylistically speaking, even the animated lead characters have about as much warmth and definition as gaming system avatars.”

  • Dogma and the dangers of nostalgia.
Nostalgia was a word first coined by an english army doctor when he observed that some soldiers became completely useless for combat due to homesickness. So nostalgia is actually a bad thing, it’s a disturbance.
Nostalgia operates on the very moments when a person’s personality was solidified during their adolescence. So basically nostalgia is a constant throwback to a period of one’s life when they were establishing the personality they were going to have for the rest of their lives. As if a need for constant reinforcement. The more one does it the more one becomes dependent on it. Also, it’s actually pretty troubling that one could need such constant re-feed back from the formative years. It’s as if the geekdom of today who worship the fucking 80s are deliberately set themselves to live in perceptual adolescence, arrested developement not as an unconscious problem but as a deliberate choice. It’s a rebellion against growing up and what better way to not only constantly reverting back to their juvenile years of adolescence which coincided with the time when Hollywood juvenilized and shallow-ed up their films.

It’s sad to see WOK being distorted into something it’s not, all for the same of some new created Geek Creed blindly accepted as an article of faith, and it’s sad to see the excellent TMP to be attempted to be reduced as some sort of 2001 clone. First if all, that TMP aims to go for a 2001 vibe IS WHAT MAKES IT GREAT in the first place. That’s a praise for the movie, not a fault. TMP stands as the true ST movie. The others TOS are enjoyable and fine (i have caveats with IV) and i’ll always defend III til the sun goes red giant. But it’s sad to see attempts to reduce TMP from it’s greatness due to the religion of WOK, Like all faiths, they just fuck up an initial good thing. The worst enemies of WOK are the fans who want to turn it into the most glorious perfect ST ever made. They actually make the movie worst.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

George Lucas: “We should have an animated fantasy film made.”

CREDITS: ‘BASED ON A STORY BY GEORGE LUCAS’

  • I love both cuts of TMP, and i might savour the original cut more because it lingers more of those wonderful special effects, specially inside V’Ger. More lingering on TMP means also more of the Jerry Goldsmith score to be hear, and that’s a great thing.

  • “Based On Something That George Lucas Scribbled On A Napkin”

  • ErnestRister

Lucas was on CBS News last Friday and said he made Star Wars for 12-year-old boys, and Strange Magic was a film he wanted to make for girls. He has to know the film is going to be a major critical and commercial bomb at this point, like Red Tails. Disney’s barely running ads, and that may be pissing him off, too .

  • Yeah, It’s a decent film, but the love for it in lieu of such movies as ST III is just wrongheaded.
I really want to kick the balls of the first motherfucked who started the “odd ST movies bad/even ST movies good” bullshit!

  • Mr Nick Nightly

i was just thinking that my girls would probably love it. That’s exactly the audience he’s aiming for. The reviews don’t matter here.

  • ErnestRister

I think Lucas stopped caring about film reviews a long, long time ago.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

Hell yeah. The day he was able to buy a ranch and name it after Mark Hamill.

  • ErnestRister

He produced an outstanding animated film in the 80’s…”Twice Upon a Time”. I don’t know if Disney now owns that, too, but I’d love to see that dusted off and given a new home video release. And Tucker: The Man and His Dream while they’re at it.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

I learned an interesting fact today that links Troma to Disney. Troma originally owned the US distribution rights to “My Neighbor Totoro.”

  • Stalkeye

    Jeebsus, Carlos!

I didn’t ask for an essay length history lesson. Ya damn Vulcan!!LOL
Your point is still moot and I’m just going by what appeals to me. My preference and my preference only and i “prefer” WOK way over TMP as well as the other ST Films. it has absolutely nothing to do with making it so “glorious’.
Also your argument about the reasoning for 80’s love is unfounded if not ‘illogical’. I think you’re reaching a bit with that aforementioned statement.
We have to agree to disagree. (as usual.)

  • ErnestRister
  • Mr Nick Nightly

With music by the guy who plays keyboards for Bon Jovi!

  • Tim R.R. Something

You think Disney agreed to these demands in order to get Star Wars and now they’re cranking out fast shitty films just to be done with it?

  • Like that would be unheard of from Hollywood.

  • Probably after the reviews for THX-1138.

  • ErnestRister

Strange Magic was animated in Singapore by a studio Lucas set up to produce the movie, not by Disney. Disney must have inherited the film during the acquisition when it was still in production.

  • Tim R.R. Something

scene from Zork The Underground Empire

  • “I didn’t ask for an essay length history lesson.”

Oh yes you did! You think Uncle Asi doesn’t know what he talks about? You mistake me for some JarJar Abrams fanboy? I’m made of better cloth.
Fucking 80s love is illogical and that’s the whole point. By then i was more then just a snot-nosed kid and i could tell the dumbness and terribleness that permeated the times, and namely, my recently discovered love for cinema. To look for a good movie i either had to look for the past decade or had to go panning from the crap like those old gold panning miners from the gold rush era. To find those needles of film gold in the giant haystack of shit that was the fucking 80s sure was quite something, especially for those like me who wouldn’t be satisfied with any bullshit crap ass dumbed down crap that Holywood constantly threw at the public in the believe that the public was made of retards and slacked jaw idiots.! The horror, the horror!

  • ErnestRister

Disney’s added Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 to Netflix. I’m a bit conflicted, because I’ve been hoping for the studio to re-release the films on Blu-Ray to correct some terrible decisions (the bulk of the Fantasia bonus features were only available through a streaming feature called BD Live, which is long since defunct, so nobody can watch them). On the other hand, I’m glad anybody can watch the films now…because Disney yanked the Blu-Ray off the market only three months after release. I’ve just been hoping for them to take a second crack at it, and that seems unlikely to happen now…at least not anytime soon.

  • Get a bunch kids aged 7-12 to see the film and ask them what they thought about the plot, the style of the film, the visuals , script etc

See if it matches up to freaking 40 + year old Justin Chang

  • Stalkeye

there were a huge abundance of quality films during the 80’s, be it EFNY, The Thing, Robocop, Raiders of the lost Ark, Predator, Aliens, Terminator, Blade runner and so forth.

What do these films all have in common besides being so damn good?
They were considered High concept films that were original enough not to piggyback ideas from other franchises. And that was just a small sample of stuff i had listed ergo, i never saw a need for all the “Gold panning’ since there were plenty of Cinema gold in thar hills!

Most of the reboots nowadays are basically from films of the 80’s.
Hollywood lost most of its originality or just wanna turn in a quick buck that’s why there’s a shitload of sequels and comic based films.
The Oscar nominated Films are mostly Biopics so what does that say for today’s sad state of cinema. there was far more innovation within the 80’s than both 90’s and 2000’s.

    Nuff said!

  • Fantasia’s Mountain Demon segment, to scare a whole new generation of kids again.

  • You are reaching, friend. Those movies are exceptions to the times. This is a common problem with the Fucking 80s fanboys.
Try to compare that fucking decade with the New Hollywood period tha preceded from the late 60s to the 70s and truly tell me the fucking 80s was a better artistic period. Just try.
The issue of the fucking 80s is mere pure nostalgia. Unfortunately, one’s nostalgia is not an argument for cinematic quality. Cinema is far more then just a collection of nostalgia and geekasms taken as unchallenged dogma. This is one of the things that have profoundly disappointed me about the geeks. To see the love for cinema became another dogma based lifestyle. We have to be better than that.

  • Stalkeye

That’s fair enough. However, i would place The undiscovered country at 2nd place. Fucking Christopher Plummer OWNED that sequel and needless to say, that its a fitting swan song from the original ST cast.
12 and 13 are very accurate. STiD looked so bad during the first 10 minutes that i didn’t bother to watch the rest of the film.

  • ErnestRister
  • Stalkeye

First Contact was the only TNG based Filmed that i thought was damn good.

  • Stalkeye

agreed on Dead Presidents, Braveheart and Goldeneye.
    Se7en? Too overrated.

  • Is Fantasia 2000 any good?

  • Stalkeye

Alan Rickman gets a lifetime pass just for playing the methodical Mastermind that was Hans Gruber. “Bill Clay” FTMFW!

  • ErnestRister

Taken on its own terms, there’s some good work there. It comes off as lacking when compared to the original film from the 40’s. The original was an earthquake in the medium, the 2000 version is much more safe. I called it “the Disney version of Disney” when I first saw it.

  • Stalkeye

  • Stalkeye

  • ErnestRister

Love the score to First Contact.

  • Oh, that’s clever.

  • Damn right.

  • I have issues with it but it’s by far the most watchable. The TNG film run didn’t have much success, sadly. They never had their TMP, unfortunately for them. They sure did had their WOK, for their sins.

  • Stalkeye

It was more than satisfying to me especially after the turd that was Generations.

  • ErnestRister

It’s also half of the running time of the original, and every sequence has a story (unlike the original). I get the feeling Roy really, really wanted the film to be liked, so there isn’t anything really challenging in it. Some very impressive draftsmanship and some striking imagery. Again, it just lacks when compared to the original.

  • Dee

The dubbings are always made in Germany. They did not want to deter their own people as they are depicted as the bad guys again.

  • RJD

    Fantastic as always asi

  • RJD

    Love the original.

Set to Black Sabbath it’s even evilerer

  • This is why i do really have a problem with middle of the road creations. It’s really impossible to please everybody, so one might as well go with just one direction. With some luck, those that enjoy will be the majority, if not, you will always get vindicated later.

  • The music used was the time’s version of Black Sabbath.

  • RJD

He should have made an animated Willow sequel

  • RJD

I tried to watch red tails 4 times. Never finished it

  • As i said in the podcast, i don’t like “transition/pass the baton” movies. It presumes a certain type of lack of intelligence in the public that i find insulting.

  • RJD

Guy needs extra income. John treats them like indentures servants. Play bon jovis way or you’ll be the next tici torres

  • I watched Willow back in the day. Even then i realized it was a rehash of SW and the movie is just not great at all. It’s… banal! It’s just there. Whatever.

  • RJD

Final frontier is better than all the tng films besides contact.

    ISAID IT

  • Stalkeye

This is from your misguided perception of so called 80’s fanbois.
Your blatant assumption of “nostalgia’ comes off as Blanket statements. And not all Geeks are entitled to feel the same as you. it’s almost like saying “everyone is entitled to my opinion”.

    Ergo “Wrong ’em Boyo’.

  • RJD

Lucas talk and trek talk in the same thread. Not agood mix. Oil and water. Leads me to ask ..

    Which way does Nick swing?

    Trek? Or
    Wars?

  • RJD

    Whatever to you

There are worse things too rehash

  • Stalkeye

  • Tim R.R. Something

    Schiess dem Fenster!

  • ErnestRister

Both Willow and Strange Magic have characters running afoul of love potions/love dust.

  • RJD

    Imagine that! Lucas recycling

  • i think it’s more like “shiesse die (3rd person plural) Fenster” (shoot the windows, and not shoot the glass as Hans repeats in english, glass in german is glas).

At the time the movie came out, i was learning German, so i was also having a blast recognizing and understanding the subtitled German dialogues. It’s pretty basic German the one used in the movie, actually, but still it was cool to be able understand it.

  • But this obvious?? What is also obvious is that Lucas was trying to create a new SW in the fantasy genre so he was reusing the same narrative tropes. Didn’t panned out.

Also, i’m dead tired of the constant rehash of SW everywhere. It has become nauseous, especially after JarJar has turned ST into a laughable version of SW, which was the last straw for me. I could live 500 years without seeing another frigging rehash of SW and i would be perfectly happy.

  • Tim R.R. Something

Where’s Dee when you need him?

  • there’s always a 3rd option: both or neither.

  • Plumber in VI was the result of a 20 years long struggle by Shatner to have his long time fellow canadian actor friend on Star Trek. Which Plumber has always wanted since he’s a Trek fan. But the producers of Trek always though he was too big a movie star to accept to be in Trek.

Shatner and Plumber are really very old friends, Shatner started as Plumber’s understudy and got his first break when he had to replace Plumber as Hamlet and according to all who watched that performance, he completely owned the role.

  • ErnestRister

Best thing about Willow was Billy Barty. Oh, and the princess turning into a warthog.

  • Exactly. Here’s our german speaking supernaught?

  • I think the transformation of the good witch from the various animals into her final human form scene was the first time use of CGI morphing for a feature film.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

    Flash Gordon and Barbarella.

    English : Glass
    German : Glas

But besides from windows there were glass walls all over that office.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

Also, “Eerie, Indiana,” “The Adventures of Pete and Pete,” Clutch, Monster Magnet, and Monica Lewinsky.

  • But they are called windows in other languages.

  • Colloquially, they could omit the “auf” (at the). How often English speaking people when they speak colloquially don’t use proper correct grammar? Same thing with Germans. In fact, one of the most difficult things about foreigners who learn German and when they visit Germany is the shock to discover that Germans speak in a very colloquial manner, as if they are speaking a different language then the one you learned. And that is not even counting the regionalisms.
They were in the middle of a shootout against an unexpected annoyance, the last thing they would care would be proper grammar, it’s safe to assume.

  • No i haven’t. But i adore Master And Commander (of course, that movie happens almost 100 years after the time of those ships i aforementioned).

  • They have began practically since 1977. Those Turkish movies, for example, are so memorable… for the wrong reasons.

  • Stalkeye

Monster Magnet? Fugg yes! Never listened to Clutch despite my Boy Deceased mentioning them a few times. Monica Lewinsky proved that plus sized Chicks gots Skillz too!! She ate Wild Bill’s Dick as if it was a Hebrew National Hot Dog!!
That Woman almost brought down the entire Clinton Administration.

  • Fate_Slistcrunch

I know Nick isn’t a huge fan of Mastodon but I am. I saw they are playing Central Park in NYC in May and hope I get to go. Have seen Mastodon twice (once opening for Slayer and once for “Alice In Chains”) and loved them both times. Have seen Clutch quite a few times but nowhere as many times as Nick, for sure.

Say, have you downloaded the Resident Evil remake?!? I was going to but then I found out that they didn’t re-master shit, just re-ported the remake from the 2002 Gamecube version!!!FUCK THAT SHIT!!! I WANT A PHOTOREALISTIC RE TRILOGY WITH THE ORIGINAL CONTROLS!!!FACT!!!

  • Bop

When I saw the movie it seemed like Bay just did that.

  • Stalkeye

Despite it being a port of the source material, (GC version) there is a shitload of enhancements; Character Models, 5.1 Audio, 60 fps and Widescreen just to name a few.
And I highly recommend the Next gen version over PS3 and 360.

The controls are less Tank like however, its best to stick with the original setting as I have also mentioned to Col Tighfighter. If You’re still not convinced, hold out for Revelations 2, I have played the demo during the NYCCC and it will make up for the clusterfuck that was RE6.

TBH, I would love for Capcom to do a trilogy from the ground up. RE2 and Nemesis have aged badly when playing the game on my PS3 or even Vita.
If Capcom was smart, they would grab these amateur but inspired Programmers to redo at least the RE2.

What’s your take on The Evil Within?
There are quite a few good set pieces and scenarios but the inventory system is way shittier than RE5’s.

So when are you gonna be on the podcast. They should do a horror podcast with you.

  • Stalkeye

So I guess they were right.

After TF2, I avoided everything Bay related even Pain & Gain which some people actually liked. Trans4mers was voted worst Film of 2014 yet it made a shitload of Money. That’s Fucking scary, Meng!

  • Stalkeye

Well, you have a point about Wild Bill getting better options.

Monica is just average but she can suck a mean dick and that’s all that mattered to him at the time.

  • Bop

You know what’s the worst of it all? Someone probably got paid big bucks for his german “knowledge” for the movie.

Language research in Hollywood is a big joke most of the times. For example,
in Hostel the dutch speak german.
In Swordfish the captured Fin speaks german and they pass it as finnish.

  • Bop

To me it was so blatantly obvious.

The general audience scares me a lot, Stalks. They get served a plate of shit and they gobble it down like M&Ms. And then they say :”Thank you, ma’am, may I have another?”

  • Stalkeye

I missed out on this “Copy Box” but I loved my Dreamcast until SEGA gave up on the Hardware Business. They lost to Sony because the PS2 was capable of playing DVDs and everyone wanted a copy of The Matrix.

Broadband didn’t catch up until the early to mid 2000’s.

  • Bop

Well, you got an interesting alternative for the SNES copybox these days. The SNES Power Pak.

Hmm, I might have been off with the downloading. I just remember that Napster was the shit I had a big download queue and I think that was around 99.

  • Bop

Don’t be such a (see picture) on the 80s, mang.

  • CreepyThinMan

Still haven’t got The Evil Within. Shinji Mikami is the father of the genre but it looked waaaay to derivative to bother with it. Maybe when it hits $20 I’ll pick it up.

I just wish he’d come back and do Resident Evil 7 for PS4. It would be FUCKING AWESOME opportunity considering that RE celebrates its 20th next year. Graphics are soo advanced these days that you could do some amazing stuff. My dream RE game would be a cross between H.P. Lovecraft and Phillip K. Dick!

I was just watching that RE2 re-skin the other day and it’s really nice. I just want that feeling again that I got when I first played RE2 back in Scotland in the late 90’s. The mood and atmosphere was AMAZING! RE6 was a fucking travesty. Virtually non-stop action and that shit bores me!!!FACT!!!

  • I’m being too kind to the fucking 80s, that’s my problem, i’m a softie.

  • Christ!! There is no resemblance at all between finnish and german!! Good lord! They really used to fuck up on the languages, didn’t they?

Similar story with portuguese, when it was not some sort of pig spanish, it was either the brazilian dialect (for portuguese from Portugal) or some nearly unintelligible atempt at the language by somebody who clearly din’t know much of it. As ytou can imagine, we here had some good laughs at that.

  • I think it’s right next week, together with Top Gear (UK) and The Americans. Yuppiiii!!!

  • Stalkeye

It is derivative in an interesting way as in RE4 Game mechanics and inventory upgrades and the there were a few indications that Mikami was channeling both Lovecraft and especially Fulci (The Beyond and City of the Dead comes to mind.)

I don’t know what were the circumstances that led to Mikami leaving Capcom. Maybe he wasn’t compensated enough for all his contributions. But hopefully, he’ll return to make an RE7.

As for a 20th Anniversary, all we’re getting is another Shitty RE Movie!

To be honest, I rather have the series end than have Capcom shell out more crap like RE6 and Operation Raccoon City. I’m content with RE4, and a few others from the franchise however, RE2 deserves a Redo. I would donate in a nanosecond if there were a Kickstarter/Crowdsourcing option.

The minute I heard of a “Wesker Jr” I knew that RE6 was gonna suck Donkey Dick. The only good thing I can recall was the encounter between Chris and Leon and that shit felt rushed. What’s sad is that the fucking game was closer to Weasel Shit Anderson than Mikami’s vision.
Oh, and don’t get me started on the orchestral Hollywood bullshit soundtrack…!!

I need to re-read your RE6 review at TB, that Shit was classic.

Also, what’s cool about the RE Remake, was those goddamn Crimson Heads. (Guess what films borrowed this concept? hmmm…. 28 Days Later and Snyder’s DOTD reboot!!)

  • Mr Nick Nightly

I still remember our dueling words over that and it’s bothered me ever since because I think I got my point across unsuccessfully.

I fear that I came off as denying the actual intent of the filmmakers’ where the stereotypes were concerned. I didn’t mean to come off as saying, “No, those robots were not meant to be a black stereotype.” I was just trying to say that I didn’t initially see them that way until it was brought to my attention. When I first saw that stupid movie, I saw them as personality types rather than an insult to a specific race. For that reason I thought everyone needed to calm down because how can robots be black people?

But that’s my unique way of seeing things and you were able to enlighten me about some things, namely about how Bay instructed his voice actors to “act more urban.” That there is a whole other issue, and not right.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

I saw Mastodon open for Clutch in ’03 and they did nothing for me. I don’t hate Mastodon, but for some reason I just can’t get into them.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

Clutch is my favorite band! I’ve saw them live 17 times between 1997-2006. Knoxville doesn’t draw as many concerts as NJ/NY, otherwise I’d have seen them at least 10 more times. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Pplq4iYw9Lw

  • Stalkeye

Nick, despite our debate, there was never any hard feelings.
    (Ya know Stalks lubs ya.)

I actually admired you coming forthright to express yourself and the tirade was Funny. The general consensus from both Blacks and whites, was that Bay/Orci and that douche Kurtzman lampooned very negative stereotypes of Black Americans that we (respectable individuals) would like to eliminate altogether.

I’m not one to find racism in everything and to be honest, I grew up on Satirical racial humor from Pryor, Murphy, Stern and a few others. Most of us can laugh at our selves.

Transformers came off insensitive and very condescending if not mean spirited especially if a chunk of the audience demographic are Kids. That’s like DC coming out with a Superhero called Ghetto-man.

    Oh, wait.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2Dv83BM_5w

Guys who grew up watching the transformers series knew that “Black” Autobots such as Jazz and Blaster never painted such a dumb ass stereotype as in the bay films; Jazz; “What’s poppin, Bitches”?

  • Stalkeye

    So would I.
Same goes for Kim Kardasian, that Iggy chick, Alicia Silverstone (During the B&R era) Nicky Manaj and a few other ‘Thickies”.

    More cushion for the pushing!

  • Mr Nick Nightly

You are correct. Admittedly, as a white guy I’m ignorant to a lot of sensitive issues to a lot of people, simply because it’s not something that I had to experience first hand. I appreciate learning how these things can effect others.

I also ain’t crazy about Kevin Hart’s buffoonery Films. He is not funny. period. (Almost comes off like a Black Adam Sandler.)

  • Stalkeye

    Hellz yeah!
Kanye wouldn’t know what to do with that. besides, i often hear that he’s into “swordfighting”. (0:’

  • ErnestRister

Watto is supposed to be a mosquito, and the Nemoidians vampires…in other words, they’re both blood-suckers. The Nemoidians were supposed to have a “Dracula” accent (“I vant to suck your blood!”) but people thought they were Asian stereotypes. Meanwhile, people couldn’t make up their mind if Watto was a Jewish stereotype or an Arab stereotype.

  • ErnestRister

    No love for Paula Jones?

  • Stalkeye

From what me and my friends presumed while watching AOTC, Watto (Anakin’s Slaveowner) demonstrated Jewish stereotypes and dont get me started on his looks.

“Watto is supposed to be a mosquito, and the Nemoidians vampires…in other words, they’re both blood-suckers.”

“Blood-suckers”,hey’re ya go! That’s the offensive term I have heard a lot about Jewish people unfortunately. (I question Lucas ‘ decisions for allowing crap like this in a family oriented film especially a venerable franchise such as this.

Way to alienate your fanbase, Fatboy!

In ROTS, yes the Neimoidians came off like a Bad Bugs Bunny cartoon. (Due to the blatant portrayal of Asian stereotypes.)

Many people from various races, cultures and such saw through Lucas’ insensitive caricatures. No Social Justice warrior Shit, but that’s so wrong! LOL

  • ErnestRister

I think Lucas was blind-sided by all that. People free-associate all the time, he and his staff were drawing from all sorts of things — themes, history — I think he blundered into the fact that people free-associate all the time. People look at clouds and see shapes, people see religious figures in waffles and tree bark. I don’t think he intended to make any sort of ethnic or racial commentary with those characters. Just what I believe.

We are focusing on the good stuff.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

I remember when she posed for Penthouse.

  • Stalkeye

The first was pretty good even though it was more derivative than original. Plus, I don’t like the fact that many see this film as the ‘inventor” of Bullet time effects.

The first Blade film implemented this technique a year before The Matrix, yet it was overlooked in Wachowskis’ favor.

Revolutions was just atrocious to say in the least and the only good thing i can recall from the bookend of the Trilogy was the final fight between Smith and Neo and the amazing ending theme by composer Don Davis. (only reason for me purchasing the Soundtrack back then.)

  • Mr Nick Nightly

I didn’t care for the first Matrix film.

  • Los benatos

    So clutch=good. Monster magnet= good? Deftones= bad?

  • Stalkeye

I liked that the Wacko siblings paid homage to my favorite genres; HK Action Flicks and Anime. However, the concept of The Matrix came off a bit pretentious if not grandiose. The cliche of some Joe schmo being the grand savior was tiring. And the superficial sunglasses with trench coat look…..hmmm, where have I seen that done before?

It was Fun at the time, but the novelty wore off after the disappointing sequels. basically, the matrix was about being inside a Videogame.
    kinda like TRON.

  • Not much nostalgic for that fucking thing, that’s for sure.

  • The movie is called Half Moon Junction or something like that.

  • Excellent. Just excellent.
It’s just that some of my fave movies came out in 1995.

  • “how can robots be black people?”

When the people who invent them, be they real-life or fictional, wants them to be so. Of all the things we create, robots will certainly be what the creators wants them to be like. I’m certain that in sometime in the future, some robots will be extension to today’s toys., and one could also say that to some extent some toys are already robots.

  • Me too.

  • Nu Metal is from the 2000s.

  • I like all of the Matrix movies, but specially the first. The sequels are way too underrated.

Holy Sheeeeeet!! Bad ass fight between Nola and Burton! Hood gets Kinapped! Power Glove!! Littlestone strikes again!!

    Fucking great ep, Meng!!

  • Bop

Bro. Banshee was some serious shit. I am so pissed off that they offed Nola. It was an super awesome and bloody fight, but I ‘d rather have Nola survived. To me the death of Nola was Opie level of shock. There was so much more life in the Nola character.
And , mang. Did that fat guy splat or what? LMMFAO
One thing is for sure. The bodycount is rising in Banshee and Chaydon must be really pissed.

That guy playing that evil Joey Styles is doing a superb job, by the way.

  • Los benatos

I’m out. Go beat off to a wookie or a Kubrick bust… Or whatever it is you do

  • HEYMYDAVE

    Ha

  • HEYMYDAVE

Hey Ben I know you’re just trying to fit in here at The Supernaughts but I need you to stop saying FILM. It’s called a movie. If it’s has subtitles it can be called a film. Others is a movie!

  • HEYMYDAVE

I made up my mind about one thing, he was an awful character. Add him to the list of nonsense characters in that complete abortion of a movie script.

  • Fate_Slistcrunch

Blah, saying the word “movies” over and over gets boring. Have to mix it up. Would you prefer moving pictures instead?

  • Fate_Slistcrunch

Yeah, I still enjoy the first Matrix. That fucking lobby scene still gets me.

  • Fate_Slistcrunch

Don’t let Nick get under your skin. I’ve argued with him on the air a few times about how much I still enjoy Tool. As much as he and I agree on music there are still some major disagreements.

  • HEYMYDAVE

    Maybe, I dunno.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

I see your point on the intention, but all I’m saying is that my brain doesn’t automatically associate buffoonish non-human characters with entire races of people. One must understand, where I am from, the “black” behavior exhibited by the two robots, for example, is the same behavior that I always saw from whites, puerto ricans, asians, blacks, etc. For me, it’s just a dirtbag personality, not a specific race.

  • Abe

    I call them talkies.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

Yeah, nu metal hit in ’95 when Korn’s first album came out. By 1998 it was everywhere.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

I only watch Harold Lloyd’s “flickerin’ funnies.”

  • But i think its fair to say that rich upper class Michael Bay views things a bit differently then you.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

I never disputed that. And to be perfectly honest, if I was to go ahead and pinpoint who those robots most behave like, I’d say they are a carbon copy of lowclass southern white boys who think they’re “thug.” They are a strange breed of person down here who listen to rap and country and like to set things on fire.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

    Disagreements BAD!

  • Mr Nick Nightly

    I would, I just wouldn’t “want” to.
