"Fifty Shades of Grey" is released and we honour that fact with a podcast episode about BDSM in movies! Plus: Interview with Fetish model... Breakfast on Planet X: BDSM in Movies (+ interview with Gia Love)

Due to this week’s release of the highly anticipated film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey, Detective Dee, Sloth and guest Shawn Alissa met to discuss the depiction of bondage, sadomasochistic practices and more in the recent film history.

We discuss how or if the depiction of BDSM in movies changed, if most movies miss the mark and what it means that Fifty Shades is such a hit.
We also talk about a few -deserved and undeserved- “classics” of the genre, like Story of O, Tokyo Decadence, Gwendoline, School of the Holy Beast...

* Due to some technical difficulties during recording and in post-production, the role of our guest Shawn sadly had to be reduced to a minimum. Or did Sloth just gag her?

    The SLOTH!!!!

  • And today’s safe word “Pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism” is brought to you by Bert and Ernie…kheh..heh..heh..heh..heh

  • Slothiplicity

    My safe word is “waffles”.

  • Slothiplicity

    Oh no! Technical difficulties…

  • I_am_better

    Fluggaenkoecchicebolsen

  • Can’t have the safe word be too easy…takes the fun out of it. 😉

  • That’s a good one! Say it five time in a row without stuttering.

  • I_am_better

Seems to be the bane of almost half of the podcasts in the last week

  • Slothiplicity

She sounds like she’s in a well. She didn’t when we were recording…

It’s unfortunate because she had a lot more to say than me.

  • “…she had a lot more to say than me”

She had the longer safe word?

  • Slothiplicity

Yes. “Hello Kitty” is longer than “waffles”.

  • I_am_better

I was gonna ask if “Hellraiser” was mentioned. It was!

  • Diverged in a Woodley

    Lol bewbs….

  • Diverged in a Woodley

Nacho Cheese will not allow me to listen to any sexy podcasts.

  • Fate_Slistcrunch

Knock on wood, we had no issues when Dee recorded with us last week. Will edit the show today so we’ll see.

  • Slothiplicity

You can’t put the cheese down for half an hour?

  • I_am_better

Well, I’ll talk to ya guys on thursday. I can make a backup recording of my side, if the Skype decides to be an a-hole again…

  • Mr Nick Nightly

    My safe word is “priapism.”

  • “Knock on wood”

    Bwhahahahahahaha!

  • Diverged in a Woodley

Dee why are you putting on your sexy voice?? Lmao!

  • Diverged in a Woodley

I’m listening now…this lady sounds hot

  • Dee

    when

  • I_am_better

    There’s a Puerto Rico Comic-Con?

  • Slothiplicity

Yes, she does. Sadly, most of her stuff seems to be lost (including the discussion of Secretary and Wonder Woman dominating Superman).

  • RJD

Tech issues. She was drafted for this show for her WW speech alone. Sadly it’s been cut from 2 shows now due to tech issues w her connection

  • RJD

    Professional

  • RJD

I had a huge crush on Dana Delani and went and saw the bdsm film comedy she was in. No wonder her movie career died a quick death

  • Slothiplicity

You didn’t like Exit to Eden?

  • Diverged in a Woodley

Is she also a stripper? What’s with the pole?

  • I_am_better

Sometimes a pole is just a pole

  • I_am_better

    Must’ve been the Rosie O’Donnell-factor….

  • Diverged in a Woodley

Well don’t blame me for being confused.

  • Slothiplicity

    That’s a Brony Pole.

  • Slothiplicity

It’s ok. I can still hear it on the raw recording.

  • Slothiplicity

Rum + cosplay hunnies = a good time.

  • Diverged in a Woodley

    Don’t be weird Sloth.

  • Slothiplicity

    Weirdness is a virtue.

  • Diverged in a Woodley

Beautiful woman. How tall is she? She looks and sounds like a lioness…

  • Diverged in a Woodley

    Let’s hope so. Slothcasts incoming?

  • Slothiplicity

I don’t know anything about her. That interview was recorded separately. You’d have to ask Dee.

  • Slothiplicity

Not that I’m aware of. I have no patience for editing. And I think it would be in bad form to post a raw recording around here giving how many slickly produced casts we have kicking around.

  • Dee
  • Stalkeye

Oh mah Dayuuuuumm! Gia, Mama mia!!

  • RJD

IS THAT THE ONE WITH DAN AKROYD AND ROSIE ODONNEL ?

  • Slothiplicity

    Yes. And Dana Delaney.

  • Diverged in a Woodley

economics would say otherwise…the more transactions/podcasts the better quality or no

  • Dee

    wut?

  • Dee
  • Slothiplicity

Peach seems to think I should start doing Slothcasts again, but I think it’s a bad idea. The ones that exist are quite primitive and dull.

  • Slothiplicity

    I’ve never studied economics…

  • Tim R.R. Something

  • Conspiracyin559

I loves me some BDSM….but what you see on film RARELY exists in the real world from my experience. For one thing…everyone is young, attractive and knows what they are doing; which I understand from a business point of view. Lets face it nobody wants to watch a 50yr old chick being Dom’d by a scrawny switch dude, and where the clamps on her Sunny Side up sized nipples are resting on her gut and pointing at the ground.

  • Conspiracyin559

The best girls are the ones whose safe word is “More”

  • Conspiracyin559

Good points about how none of the films…even the porn, none of them really get into the psychological aspects of it. But honestly…that could be a buzzkill, as often there are some really powerful life events that lead people into the BDSM lifestyle.

  • Dee

I’d claim that a few at least “kind of get the essence”, means it’s not a realistic portrayal maybe, but they get some of the psychological points. A few.

  • Diverged in a Woodley

    It’s great.

  • Slothiplicity

Is that the class where you learn how to cook?

    http://www.paibleschool.co.uk/images/he.jpg

  • Abe

I can’t even read it in my head without stuttering.

  • Abe

My safe word is Nick Nightly.

  • Mr Nick Nightly

    You will never find serenity.

  • Stalkeye

Dee and ‘throp sound ok, but I could barely make out what Shawn is saying..too many Audio drops. I saw Secretary and personally, the Movie would have been much better (aesthetically speaking) if there was a prettier Actress instead of the Miscast Maggie Gyllenhaul. (Don’t get me started on The Dark Knight.)

Anyway, I can’t wait for the hyperbole that this “50 shades of” to die.
I never understood the appeal of BDSM. As the late Jim Morrison would sing; “people are strange”.

    WTF?!?

  • RJD

    I know.

    I saw it.

    In theaters

  • Call me a prude if you must, but BDSM is for sickos. Just fuck like a normal person, Jesus.

  • Abe

I’ve heard about you Canadians. Your views on normal might not be correct.

  • Abe

    haha!

  • Two naked bodies is all you need.

  • Dee

People are different. Nobody has to engage in everything.

  • Dee

And that’s okay. But doing some research about so-called “deviant” forms of sexuality can be enlightening.

  • I agree it’s interesting to read about, but then again it’s interesting to read about serial killers and war criminals too, to make a wildly inappropriate comparison. =P

  • Dee

Oh, I gotta disagree with that comparison!

  • I’d expect most would, but for me I find it an apt comparison as I would be just as likely to kill someone as I would be to partake in BDSM activities. I have no interest in taking part with either, though I’m sure I’d be far more inclined to kill someone given the appropriate persuasion.

  • Dee

Okay I get what you mean. But I think it would be wrong to put people who practice BDSM on the same level as those people you mentioned.

  • Thus why I said wildly inappropriate. =P

I don’t think it’s much of a leap though to think some of those into the whole BDSM thing would take it a bit farther into assault, battery, or maybe even murder. Obviously I’m not saying everyone, but for a certain aspect maybe.

We actually have a high profile case of this in Canada right now where a big name radio host has been charged with numerous counts of sexual assault that, if there was consent (which he seems to think there was), would be simply good ol’ BDSM.

  • Rare English Rose
  • Abe

Oh that’s just intellectually lazy! People make the same arguments about violent movies and video games.

  • Lazy? Sure, but partaking in the physical aspect of BDSM is a lot different than playing a game or watching a movie. Watching a BDSM themed film or porno is a better comparison to violent games/movies.

And yes, games/movies can influence an already disturbed mind. They’re not a key influence like the media tries to portray it as at times, but they can definitely help shape or encourage the activities of minds that are already twisted.

  • Abe

Disturbed minds are always going to find a way to pop off. To say those disturbed are more likely to commit crimes because they might toss on a pair of nipple clamps is nothing more than pure hyperbole.

  • Yes, they tend to find a way, but there is always some sort of trigger mechanism at play. If the disturbed individual gets a taste of the nipple clamps, that taste can then develop into other things.

What I’m saying is a disturbed individual who has never encountered BDSM before and doesn’t know what nipple clamps are isn’t going to just go around murdering people with nipple clamps, however if the disturbed individual does encounter it and enjoys it, this can then possibly encourage the individual to take it a step further.

And I’m not trying to say everyone is like this, but I guess I am implying that everyone who does BDSM is a little “different” up there in the brain. Everyone has a different makeup as to what they like and don’t like, their sanity level, etc.

  • Abe

I do disagree with you my man, but you’ve made your point clear and I understand it. That’s all I could ask for!

  • And that’s good enough for me! =)

  • Dee

But Puck. 1) @video games etc.: People feel a need to watch/read things that tackle violence. That’s normal. It is, among many things, a way to cope with the real-world violence. Now should we just abandon every little hint of violence in our culture because, hey it could trigger someone somewhere to do something bad? C’mon think about that. It’s like giving in to those terrorists. But that topic is so broad and far from the point, I am not going to elaborate.
    2) Did some disturbed people like serial killers, etc. engage in BDSM? Sure, but that does not mean all people who practice it are like-minded. I am out of my depth here regarding the exact psychology, but I can tell you it’s normal. The fact that real BDSM is very controlled means they maybe have a better grasp on their violent and sexual impulses than many other people.

  • 1. That’s fine and I’m not saying anything should be banned or anything like that. That’s unfair to those it won’t have a negative effect on, which is the vast majority. All I’m saying is it can and does have that negative impact in certain situations which are unavoidable. That’s life. The individual is the one to “deal with” as opposed to the various outside influences.

    2. Exactly, they’re not all like minded and I didn’t mean to imply that they’re all capable of going further. I simply have the opinion that they’re all “calibrated” differently in some way that leads them to enjoy the activity and that this “calibration” is different than the norm.

Thus, I would deem the activity “sick” as, to me, it’s abnormal, offputting behavior, and in turn the individual is somewhat of a “sicko” in my view.

Now me using the word “sicko” may be coming off harsher than I intend as well, because I could very well have nothing against the person outside of this BDSM aspect and even be good friends with them. But part of me would still think he’s a sicko for wanting to be dragged around on a leash or whatever.

  • Dee

Well okay I see what you mean. And while I cannot chime in, I won’t try to preach to you.

  • That’s cool. I don’t mean to preach either, just saying what I think and it’s all cool for people to think differently. Yay diversity!

  • Stalkeye

    LOL

  • Slothiplicity

Fuck you, Puck. Puritanical assholes like you have been persecuting people like me for centuries. It’s getting old.

  • Slothiplicity

BDSM is far less violent than hockey.

  • lol I’m definitely not a puritan nor am I persecuting, but yeah I am an asshole. I’m free to consider it sick just as anyone else is free to practice it. I don’t care if they do it or not, but I’ll still gonna think it’s twisted.

  • True.

  • They consider universal healthcare a good thing, so they are into something.

  • Is “Dayum” a diferent spelling of “Damn”?

  • How about finding Firefly?

  • Abe

Why would I want to talk single payer healthcare in a thread about BDSM movies? There are tons of political sites.

  • Stalkeye

    In the Hood, yes!

  • You suffer pain and hurt, you might need a doctor afterwards.
Also, he was questioning the wisdom of Canadians.

  • School Of The Holy Beast is damn good. Far smarter movie then one would expect from the description “japanese nunspoitation”.

The same director showed prolonged scenes of torture on women through flogging in some of previous women protagonist movies like “Girl Boss Guerilla”, “Girl Boss Revenge: Sukeban”, “Sex & Fury” and “Terrifying Girls’ High School: Lynch Law Classroom”.

  • Strange you guys didn’t mention the Fu-Manchu movies, especially those made before the implementation of the Hayes Code, which for the times featured raunchy barely disguised scenes of BDSM under the excuse of having the heroes tortured by Fu-Manchu and his daughter Fah lo Suee, much to their obvious delight.

  • Dee

We left a lot of movies untouched. There is only so much you can discuss in one hour.

  • Dee

    Yes, it’s very well-made too.
