Second part of my VIECC Vienna Comic Con 2015 report, with tons of cosplay pics. My report from the first VIECC: Vienna Comic Con 2015! (Pt.2)

Part Deux of my report about the VIECC, the first Vienna Comic Con (Nov 21- Nov 22, 2015)!

(Here is Part 1.)

The “Wienerland” series panel

Okay, the title might sound, uhm, ambiguous in English (means “Land of the Viennese” in German), but this looks actually quite promising.

Wienerland is a planned series of 8 episodes a 50 minutes,a trailer for the pilot was presented at the VIECC. It’s a mix of post-apocalyptic action, Fantasy and Spaghetti Western which the producers describe as “Spaghetti Fantasy”.

In the trailer, the concept- and design- mix look pretty sweet and sound to me. Not to forget that this is a comparatively low-budget  production in a country where a movie with a budget of 4 Million Euros is considered as “high budget” already and, as I pointed out before, Austria is almost a barren land for genre fare.

And this looks pretty decent!

Wienerland is a production by Derringer Entertainment and is aimed at the international market, with dialogue in English language.

The Cosplay

What can I say, Cosplay apparently becomes more mainstream and increasingly important for Cons with each year.

Trends I noticed:

  • Harley Quinns and Poison Ivys en masse. Not surprising.
  • MANY, many “Dr. Whos” – the Fez-wearing variant. Men, women and kids, I lost count.
  • Many “Peggy Carters”
  • Quite a few Breaking Bad cosplayers. Probably due to Giancarlo Esposito’s guest stint.
  • “Jokers” everywhere. Male and Female
  • No male Thor, only female Thors.
  • “Black Widows”

  • Not as many Stormtroopers as I expected.
  • No Superman (at least I did not spot one).
  • Only a few “Iron Men”.

My favourites:

#1 Jar Jar Binks

Since all Jar Jar Binks- masks were burned in 2000, this dude just painted one of those popular rubber horse masks and attached two painted ping pong balls as eyes and two cleaning rags as ears. Combine this with some decent body painting and a not-so-authentic costume: Two thumbs up for funniest costume indeed!

#2 Marty McFly

Great Scott!

#3 The Simpsons

#4 Leela

Only Nibbler is missing!

#5 “Crossover”

I love everything about that photo.

#6 Family Guy/American Dad (?)

#7 No idea where this is from…
(*Update: Bioshock Infinite)

…but they rock.

#8 Joker / Mad Hatter

#9…and who is that again? Hmmmm…

…I don#t know, but I suddenly was filled with inner peace.

Final thoughts…

It was an exhausting, but very fun event. Everybody was nice, nobody seemed to misbehave, the organisation was excellent. I hope I can be there again in November 2016.

Till next year!

Detective Dee reviews movies and sometimes TV-series. He likes to indulge in the Asian cinema, exploitation flicks and the horror genre but is no stranger to Blockbuster culture either. He writes whatever he wants, but always aims to entertain.

  • Austria bringin’ out dem cosplay hotties mirite?

    The press pass is sick.

Dude dressed as one of the Hanson brothers clearly knows what’s up.

  • Sagamanus

Could be Silent Hill that one you aren’t familiar with?

  • “No male Thor, only female Thors.”
And that’s not a bad thing, if you ask me.

  • I_am_better

    Jar Jar-cosplayer…oh, my.

  • I admire his courage.

  • I_am_better

A very thin line between “courage” and “complete lack of self-awareness” in that guy’s case.

  • I_am_better

Lmao at the Terrence & Phillip-cosplay. Very clever.

  • Nah, i think the dude did it for laughts.

  • 90% of the cosplay shown above i have no idea what’s about. And i thought i was a nerd!!

  • No, I know Silent Hill well and it’s not that. It looks a bit like Bioshock, but it isn’t that one either.

  • Stalkeye

Glad you had a great time, S! And I love the Spock T-Shirt as well as some of the Cosplayers’ costumes. Well, that DD Cosplayer didn’t fit in with the “Avengers”. Lacks Panache. Or was he implying that the black costume looked much better than the one that debuted during the last ep of Netflix’s DD series?

Didja hookup with any of the Nerd Chicks? If I was single (Or unscrupulous. LOL) I would certainly make a play. Imagine making out with a Woman in full cosplay? Where were these Wimmen when I was single and a lil younger? )0:

  • Stalkeye

  • Stalkeye

Just as long as there’s no Jessica Jones. (0:<

  • updated. It IS Bioshock Infinite.

  • The DD cosplay looked actually pretty damn good in real- and it was a girl. But if you like the costume itself, well that depends on your taste.
I am pretty sure many tried to hook up with cosplay girls and failed. It’s the most obvious action they will expect and it can come over as sleazy quickly. And it reminds me of a certain pathetic person who desperately wanted into some cosplay girl pants, so that thought is tainted anyway.

  • Stalkeye

“And it reminds me of a certain pathetic person who desperately wanted into some cosplay girl pants, so that thought is tainted anyway.” LMMFAO Ouch, my Ribs! XD

Ballbreaking aside, it would be nice to date someone who shares the same interests. My Lady doesn’t care for Comic Films or Sci Fi. She’s like 75% of Women-loves Rom Coms and Dramas!!!
Nowadays, I have seen more and more Women embracing Geek culture (which was seen as Taboo.) and its a beautiful thing.

  • Oh definitely, I don’t think it has to be sleazy to hook up with someone there, but the girls will immediately expect the worst, due to experience. You know I always hear that 50% of all horror fans are female, but I never met a single one.

  • I think I like my Nostromo shirt the most.

  • Hell yeah!! I want one!

I’m the proud owner of a Jaws poster T-Shirt. I love that thing!

  • I am still debating about my fair share though.

  • Stalkeye

50%?? Oh mah Dayum! Well, one of my exGfs were into Gory Horror. For some reason, she really liked Candyman. Still trying to figure out why. XD

  • Maybe the trick is no not look to geeky, or rather, go as a civilian and let the girls teach you about their favorite geek stuff. Just saying.

  • Because it’s a good movie, that’s what.

  • I have a suspicion….:D

  • I suspected you would like that.

  • Stalkeye

    Candyman was lame.

  • Tarmac492.1

Did you use your press pass for meeting chicks?

  • Stalkeye

    Good game but very overrated.

  • Stalkeye

Had no idea that you’re a Batman fan.

  • part-time

  • I’m like those chicks who wear an Iron maiden t-shirt without having a clue

  • God damn posers.

  • Stalkeye

Or in many cases, The Misfits tees? I see quite a few in NYC alone.
    Those Bloody posers!

  • Stalkeye

    Same here!

  • Tarmac492.1

I remember a scene in the original Bring it On when Kirsten Dunst’s character is talking to Jesse Bradford’s. He is wearing a Clash ts-shirt. Dunst character looks at it and says “So, is that like your older brother’s band?” yikes.

  • Stalkeye

That’s soo wrong! What Asshole wrote that script? Lemme at him/her!!!

  • Never saw the sequels, but the first is pretty good.

  • Why? I’m enjoying the series. Or you just don’t like the actress?

  • Stalkeye

I don’t care for the actress that’s true but its been a slow burn during the first 3 episodes. My Wife asked me; “Is this almost over”?

  • Stalkeye

A guy who was killed by a White Racist Mob, only to live again and kill da brothas in the Projects? Does that make sense? If I were him, I would go after the descendants of those Fuckers! Only good thing about Candyman was the ending. Wasted effort from Barker.

  • Bop

I found that the funniest one as well. And I am not even a Southpark fan.

  • If i remember correctly, Candyman himself was victim of his own people’s prejudices. Candyman wants to take revenge ON THE WHOLE WORLD.

  • If you ask me, TV shows SHOULD start with a slow burn. All the best ones i have seen are like that. HBO excels at that kind of storytelling.

  • horrible

  • Maybe a little. But a nice change of pace and a step into the right direction anyway.
