Hello again. It’s friday and time to wrap up the week of news. This week, we had a LOT of stuff in the Supernaughts’ “News”-section already through the week, ranging from the Superbowl TV-spot of Captain America: Civil War to “Battlestar Galactica” getting another reboot – this time in cinema form. And of course that last trailer for “Batman V. Superman” – or as I like to call it “Batman V. Superman V. urban landscape“. But enough about that, let’s see what else happened during the week – this time, it’s pretty trailer-heavy:

“BAD BOYS 3” MOVING AHEAD WITH SMITH AND…CARNAHAN

The “Bad Boys“-sequel (which was announced way, way earlier when Sony released the titles of all their planned films – after the hacking scandal and their re-organization – setting release dates for “Bad Boys” 3 AND 4 at February 17th, 2017 and July 3rd, 2019) seems to be in production now, with Joe Carnahan as the writer/director. This became pretty obvious as Carnahan Tweeted a still image of a previz for the film yesterday:

And Will Smith is apparently on board as well, with Martin Lawrence. He pretty much confirmed this in a radio interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra early on in the week, as he gave this response to a question about “Bad Boys 3”: “I saw Martin [Lawrence] a few weeks ago,” Smith reveals. “I haven’t seen him for about two years. We just looked at each other. We hugged. In that moment, we knew we were making another Bad Boys. We’re definitely doing another one.”

ANOTHER “HUNTSMAN”-TRAILER OUT

Universal released another trailer for the upcoming sequel “The Huntsman: Winter’s War“. The movie looks way more over-the-top and sinister than “Snow White and the Huntsman“, that’s for sure. And that might be a good thing. Full synopsis here:

“Discover the story that came before Snow White in The Huntsman: Winter’s War.  Chris Hemsworth and Oscar® winner Charlize Theron return to their roles from Snow White and the Huntsman, joined by Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain.

Theron stars as evil Queen Ravenna, who betrays her good sister Freya (Blunt) with an unforgivable act, freezing Freya’s heart to love and unleashing in her an icy power she never knew she possessed.  Retreating to a kingdom far to the north, Freya raises an army of Huntsmen as her protectors, with the only rule that no two of them should ever fall in love. As a war for domination escalates between the two queens, the hero standing between them is Freya’s most elite Huntsman, Eric (Hemsworth).  Alongside fellow warrior Sara (Chastain)—the only woman who has ever captured his heart—Eric must help Freya vanquish her sister…or Ravenna’s wickedness will rule for eternity.

Producer Joe Roth (Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland) once again leads the team in this breathtaking prequel in the legendary saga that is directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan.  This spring, find out who will win the war between good and evil in the epic action-adventure The Huntsman: Winter’s War.”

“xXx 3” PLOT SYNOPSIS RELEASED

xxx-3-vin-diesel-set-photo-1

Just in case someone cares, Revolution Studios released a plot synopsis for the action frachise-threequel, with the announcement that Paramount Pictures will handle the worldwide distribution of the film. Here’s the plot:

The third explosive chapter of the blockbuster franchise that redefined the spy thriller finds extreme athlete turned government operative Xander Cage (Vin Diesel) coming out of self-imposed exile and on a collision course with deadly alpha warrior Xiang and his team in a race to recover a sinister and seemingly unstoppable weapon known as Pandora’s Box. Recruiting an all-new group of thrill-seeking cohorts, Xander finds himself enmeshed in a deadly conspiracy that points to collusion at the highest levels of world governments. Packed with the series’ signature deadpan wit and bad-ass attitude, “xXx: THE RETURN OF XANDER CAGE” will raise the bar on extreme action with some of the most mind-blowing stunts to ever be caught on film.

Whaddya know – the movie actually HAS a plot.

“CRIMINAL” TRAILER AND A REALLY CRAZY SYNOPSIS

Criminal” – the upcoming movie from Ariel Vromen, the director of “The Iceman” had it’s trailer premiered this week, with the official plot synopsis. And that one sounds positively crazy:

“The story of the right man in the wrong body. In a last-ditch effort to stop a diabolical plot, a dead CIA operative’s memories, secrets, and skills are implanted into an unpredictable and dangerous death-row inmate in hopes the he will complete the operative’s mission.

Summit Entertainment and Millennium Films present a Benderspink production and Millennium Films production and a Campbell Grobman Films production, a film by Ariel Vromen.”

So to sum it up, it’s basically like Jason Bourne was implanted into the head of Hannibal Lecter.

“STAR WARS EPISODE VIII” START FILMING

694px-Star_Wars_Logo.svg

After being pushed back a few weeks (and of course, the film’s release date being pushed back as well, to Christmas 2017), the filming of the Rian Johnson-written/directed  “Star Wars“-sequel has begun. This was confirmed by Bob Iger, the Disney head honcho, at The Walt Disney Co.’s quarterly earnings call. Iger stated “Filming of Star Wars: Episode VIII, the next chapter of the legendary saga, has just commenced and it will be in theaters December 2017. And production of Episode IX, a 2019 release, has also begun.

Iger also had some words about the Gareth Edwards-helmed “Star Wars” standalone-film: “Filming of Rogue One is virtually completed and we absolutely love what we’ve seen so far,” he said, of the heist story about Rebel plans to steal the blueprints for the original Death Star. (The film, directed by Godzilla’s Gareth Edwards, will be released Dec. 16.) “This is the first of a set of planned stand-alone stories and we’re already in preproduction on our next one, for release in May of 2018.

“HARDCORE” –> “HARDCORE HENRY”

A new trailer was released for the ultraviolent first-person action film by director Ilya Naishuller, and with it a slight change in the film’s title. Now it sounds even MORE like a porn-movie title. But that’s what it really is meant to be: porn for action-junkies. “Hardcore Henry” opens in theaters nationwide on April 8th.

JOHNNY DEPP TO STAR IN “THE INVISIBLE MAN”

vidtile_InvisibleMan

Universal’s reboot of it’s classic Universal Monsters catalogue is rolling onwards. This week saw the official announcement of Johnny Depp to star in “The Invisible Man“. This announcement came a few weeks after Tom Cruise was set to star in “The Mummy”, which the reboot-mastermind Alex Kurtzman will direct for a June 9, 2017, release. So I guess Universal is not holding back any punches. They’ve now got two huge stars for two movies, and of course there have also been rumors that Angelina Jolie is being persuaded to play the Bride of Frankenstein. However the idea of these contemporary reboots makes us fans of the originals feel, I guess we just have to learn to accept that these WILL happen. Whether we’d like that or not.

IN OTHER UNIVERSAL CASTING NEWS…

Universal is ALSO heavily into casting the upcoming, F. Gary Gray-directed “Furious 8“. Rumors were posted this week about them having approached Charlize Theron as a villain for the movie. I still feel that after Luke Evans and Jason Statham playing the villainous Shaw Brothers in the previous two films, I’d cast Helen Mirren as their vengeful mother or something…after all, she was just about the only good part in those “RED” films. But this is still strictly in the “rumor” compartment.

“THE PURGE” TAKES ON THE ELECTION

Pretty convenient timing – and theme – for another “Purge“, don’t you think? Looks to be the biggest Purge yet, but I really hope that this will be the final part of a trilogy instead of releasing annual “Purge“-films ’til the end of time…

Oh, wait – this is Lionsgate we’re talking about.

DANNY MCBRIDE FOR “ALIEN: COVENANT”?

bestfictionalcharactersof201326_1387548011

In other completely unexpected casting news, Danny McBride (“Eastbound and Down”, “This is The End”, “Your Highness“) is apparently in “early discussions” to star in the “Prometheus“-sequel. Ehh….I guess that “it could work!!!!” gif I posted earlier might work with this one too.

“THE LOBSTER” – THE WEIRDEST UPCOMING MOVIE YET?

A trailer was released for “The Lobster” – a film from Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, starring Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Lea Seydoux, John C. Reilly, Ben Whishaw, and Olivia Colman. And it has got to have one of the strangest plots I’ve read in a long time:

An unconventional love story set in a dystopian near future where single people, according to the rules of the Town, are arrested and transferred to the Hotel.  There they are obliged to find a matching mate in 45 days.  If they fail, they are transformed into an animal of their choosing and released in the woods.  A desperate man escapes from the Hotel to the woods where the Loners live and there he falls in love although it’s against the rules.

So – “Logan’s Run” with animal transformations? Weird but intriguing.

“PREDATOR” SEQUEL TIDBIT

Well, not actually any other news, except that writer Fred Dekker did sorta confirm that the production is still going on for his and writing partner/director Shane Black‘s “Predator” film is still going on. Dekker posted this vague thing on Facebook:

SPIT-TAKE OF THE WEEK

daily-show-spit-take

Well, William Shatner gave a statement this week, that he would be “Ready to Return to ‘Star Trek’ as an Aged Captain Kirk“, if asked. For god’s sakes Bill – don’t give them any ideas! Of course with Shatner you have to remember that it’s nearly impossible to tell whenever he’s joking or not.

I know it’s hip to bring old men onto the screen, “Expendables“-style, but really: the best “Expendables”-movie ever made was the Michael Caine starring “Harry Brown” anyways.

That is all.

  • Wow! Invisible man!! That’s going to be a good one, I suppose. Loved the old 30’s one.

  • I_am_better

It is a classic for sure. I’m just not sold on them making all of these reboots set in present day

  • Tim R.R. Something

    Who wanted adult snow white?

  • I_am_better

    The kids…?

  • I_am_better
  • I think so too. I don’t like remakes but there are some exceptions. Take Scarface for example. 🙂

  • I_am_better

That’s right! Thank you. I keep forgetting that “Scarface” was also a remake.

  • Also, the fly. 😉

  • I_am_better

Yup. I have been brainstorming about an article on remakes, and The Fly, The Thing, Cat People and The Blob were on my mind but for some reason I just forgot Scarface

  • The idea for The Lobster was stolen from Phoebe.

  • I_am_better

    What’s a Phoebe?

  • I_am_better

    Ah.

  • I love Scarface. One of Al Pacino’s best.

  • LOL! XD

  • I’ve found some for you. 3:10 to Yuma, True Grit, Heat(I didn’t know this was a remake), Insomnia.

  • KilliK

    whhhoooyahhh.

  • Stalkeye

Frank Grillo as the The Punisher!
Danny McBride In an Alien Movie? Kiss that franchise goodbye!
Sorry K, but I’m gonna borrow your gif for a sec.

  • Stalkeye

Can’t believe ppl actually thought Friends was this great series.

  • Stalkeye
  • franks_television

I don’t think I would choose to be a lobster. They don’t even live in the woods, as far as I know.

  • It was.

  • Tarmac492.1

i have a severe man crush on Grillo and im fine with that

  • I_am_better

Perhaps a futuristic giant mutant woodlobster?

  • franks_television

    That could work.

  • Sagamanus

Woah now hold on there Stx. Danny has glimpses of serious and I think he can be very good. The question should be more to do with what they the studio has planned for him. That might not bode well.

  • Sagamanus

    Lobster sounds great.

  • Sagamanus

Not sure about that Huntsman trailer. Looks like they’re about to start breakdancing.

  • Dee

Looks like a load of crap.

  • Dee

The evil brothers from F&F are called Shaw Bros???

  • Stalkeye

    Yeah, um..okay…..

  • Dee

“Criminal”: Face off meets Mr. Brooks, lmao. Kevin Costner is the new Liam Neeson.

  • Sagamanus

I’m speaking in euphemisms Dee. Jesus, I’m trying not to offend IAB as he likes snow, and swords, and magic. Leave em alone!

  • I_am_better

*begins sharpening his magic sword that’s made of snow*

  • I_am_better

Owen Shaw and Deckard Shaw, wasn’t it? I wonder if it was accidental or not

  • CoolHandJuke

since Eastbound and Down is over, Danny should do us all a favor and fade into obscurity…

  • Stalkeye

I dont recall him being in anything serious even when he played a Bad Guy.
That Fucker had me laughing my ass off when he mentioned the Konami code in some Movie where he played a kidnapper but replacing Naomi is a big error in judgement.

  • I_am_better

    Love the mohawk

  • Sagamanus

Don’t really know why she isn’t on board either. And McBride does seem like a strange choice as most know him for his comedy. I’m just saying if the sun is at the right angle and McBride is under its rays, I think he can be serious. There is even some of that in Eastbound & Down.

  • I_am_better

I am NOT doing a “Friends” podcast with Puck.

  • Kylo Ronin

At least they realized that Frank Grillo was one of the great parts of the last Purge movie. So make a deadly convict even more deadlier. That’s going to turn out well.

  • Kylo Ronin

    There’s that R-rated one?

  • Love this one. Incredible practical effects. 🙂

  • You should take a look at Tasmanian great fresh water cray fish.

  • Sagamanus

Your Highness is a masterpiece. This generations The Princess Bride.

  • CoolHandJuke

i never realized Charlize Theron was in Playboy. I look up the pictures and wasn’t impressed…

  • jim83

A Bad Boys 3 with Carnahan behind the camera is something i would probably see, with Bay not a chance.Carnahan always made decent flicks, from Narc to The Grey all very enjoyable.Let’s forget the A-Team though..

  • I_am_better

Carnahan seems to be one of those guys who develops many original projects, then those fall apart and he has to take some studio assignment to cover the losses.
