Spinning Headlines – Week 33: Affleck/Christie, Dark Tower, IT, Jean-Claude Van Johnson, Spider-Man, MacGyver, Arrival, Holmes & Watson…
Hiya. Time to take a look at some miscellaneous entertainment news from the week again. I know: Sunday is a bit late release date – if I wanted to make some excuse over just lazying around and watching the Olympics, I’d probably say that I was waiting for the week to be over news-wise.
So…I was waiting for the week to be over news-wise. Let’s get to it. Some short bits first:
First of all, the “truth” over that Dwayne Johnson/Vin Diesel-social media feud came out. Sorta. I guess we can blame the Atlanta heat on that one.
While we’re on the subject of these two bald men, Johnson made this Instagram post to call the end to “Fast 8” shooting and confirmed that he’ll be starting filming on “Jumanji” – and that one will NOT be a reboot, but a sequel.
Finished strong and on to the next. That's an officially wrap on #FastAndFurious8. Thank you to our director @fgarygray for the vision and execution. Thank you UNIVERSAL for being tremendous partners as always, thank you to all my fellow co-stars for the daily effort and grind. Scott Eastwood you handsome sumbitch! Natalie Emmanuel I have a cold Budweiser ready for you and Tyrese Gibson you still have the biggest smile and forehead I've ever seen.😂 And a huge THANK YOU to our hard working production crew – the backbone of our business. Your kind words meant a lot to me last night – thank you! In the end, we all rallied, as great teams do, kicked ass and will deliver an amazing movie to the world. Proud of our entire FAST FAMILY. And now in two weeks I'll reunite with ol' friends Kevin Hart & Jack Black and we have the honor to introduce a whole new generation to the amazing world of #JUMANJI. *(for the record we are NOT making a reboot, but rather a continuation of the awesome JUMANJI story). It's also crazy to me how much me, Kev and Jack look like triplets when we're together. 👶🏽👶🏻👶🏿. Man this is gonna be FUN. #WheelsUp #ThatsAWrap #FromFastAndFurious #StraightIntoJumanji #BigBrownBaldTattooedMan #DarkChocolateComedicRockStar #BrillaintCrazyCurvyCaucasion #TheseHashtagsAreRidiculous #INeedSleepAndCARBS #ButIWillSettleForTequila
And Diesel stated in a Facebook Live Session, that the Guardians of the Galaxy will indeed be featured in “Avengers: Infinity War”. We’ll just call that the “DUH” of the week.
Second – to no ones surprise whatsoever, it seems that the “Ben-Hur“-remake is going to be a massive box-office flop. To someone who saw a couple of trailers of that “epic”, I can’t say I’m surprised.
AFFLECK FILMS AGATHA CHRISTIE
Apparently Ben Affleck is not working exclusively at Warner Brothers now, as 20th Century Fox announced that Affleck will be directing and starring in a movie adaptation of Agatha Christie‘s short story “Witness for the Prosecution“. The film, written by Christopher Keyser, tells the story of “a trial involving a man arrested for the murder of an older woman who named the man as her sole heir. The man, it turns out, was already married, which casts a great deal of suspicion on him. During the trial, his wife agrees to testify for the prosecution, albeit as part of a convoluted plan to eventually secure a “Not Guilty” verdict.”
But – surprise surprise; this WILL be a remake, as Billy Wilder already directed this one in a 1957 film starring Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton. And even nailed 6 Academy Award-nominations for it. Not too shabby. So Affleck has some major boots to fill with this one. One interesting aspect about this remake is also that Matt Damon will be on board as a co-producer at least; it’s been a while since the “Will Hunting“-team has been back together…
DE NIRO GOES “CREED” (TRAILER SLIGHTLY NSFW-ISH)
Well, not quite. But you have to wonder the coincidence that after Sylvester Stallone reprised his part of Rocky Balboa for the seventh time in “Creed“, Robert DeNiro – the star of that other great boxing-film, “Raging Bull” – is now ALSO appearing in a boxing film as an ageing mentor. The film is called “Hands of Stone” and it tells the story of Roberto Duran (Edgar Ramirez) and Sugar Ray Leonard’s (Usher Raymond) rivalry. DeNiro plays Duran’s cornerman, Ray Arcel. Official logline for the film:
“HANDS OF STONE follows the life of Roberto Duran (Edgar Ramirez), the Panamanian fighter who made his professional debut in 1968 as a 16 year-old and retired in 2002 at the age of 50. In June 1980, he defeated Sugar Ray Leonard (Usher Raymond) to capture the WBC welterweight title, but shocked the boxing world by returning to his corner in their November rematch, famously saying the words “no mas” (no more.)”
SOME “DARK TOWER” IMAGE TEASERY
— Tom Taylor (@TomTaylor1607) August 19, 2016
That first one is the courtesy of actor Tom Taylor, who plays the character of Jake Chambers, and it looks like some sort of teaser poster design. Those who know the books know what the sentence means. Other stills featuring Taylor as well as Idris Elba can be seen HERE.
“SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING” (MAYBE) HAS IT’S MARY JANE
And she will be played by Disney Channel-star Zendaya (“Shake It Up!”, “K.C. Undercover”). Now, keep in mind that this is still just an unconfirmed rumor. She HAS been cast in the film, but there are now apparently some hints that her character name “Michelle” might in fact be a cover name for Mary Jane. And – of course – some smarmy reporters have already stated that this will surely again spark another bout of nerd rage, as just about EVERY casting-news in the superhero-films tends to do.
Me, personally? I have never seen anything that she’s in, but as it is now Marvel Studios taking creative control in the things “Spider-Man” – and NOT Sony – I trust their instincts. Also, this would mean that they are NOT going for the Gwen Stacy-saga for the 3rd time, which is probably good. They completely fucked that up in the Sam Raimi-continuum, and then it ended up being one of the FEW things they actually got right in the Marc Webb-years.
JAMES WAN-RETOOLED “MACGYVER” TRAILER
Remember that first trailer for the CBS reboot-series of “MacGyver”? That – to be perfectly honest – looked LAME in all accounts. And as was reported a while ago, the studio kinda felt the same and asked the series producer James Wan to film an entirely new pilot from scratch. Now the trailer of the NEW pilot is out and it looks…a whole lot better. Sure – the show looks way more like a “Mission; Impossible“-style team effort now instead of focusing on the lone hero, but who knows? And they made Lucas Till‘s hairdo look a lot more like the “classic” MacGyver-mullet instead of that whatever-the-hell-it-was Grunge-hair in the previous trailer.
JCVD – THE TV-SERIES?
The trailers that have come up this week on the Netflix Jean-Claude Van Damme-starring series “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” have me intrigued. It seems that this is sort of following in the spirit of Van Damme’s self irony/parody-performance in the movie “JCVD“. Which is definitely a good thing. And the reviews of the pilot have been very good. Color me intrigued on this one.
JARED LETO JOINS “BLADE RUNNER”
…and that’s about all that’s known at this point; Jared Leto is the latest actor to join the Denis Villeneuve-directed “Blade Runner“-sequel. Maybe he’ll get some actual screentime in this one? Although the cast is already pretty hefty, consisting of Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Carla Juri, Mackenzie Davis, Barkhad Abdi, David Dastmalchian, Hiam Abbass, Lennie James, and Dave Bautista.
But… You know what I’d want? Edward Motherfucking James Olmos back as Gaff. Hell – make him be the new boss in Bryant’s place. But that’s just me I guess….
SPEAKING OF DENIS VILLENEUVE….
…remember that relly cool-looking teaser for his upcoming Alien Invasion-movie “Arrival“? This week we got the FULL trailer and HOLY SHEET does it look intriguing. Like my fellow contributor on the site, Detective Dee, said; it could be that Villeneuve will once again save the end of the movie year.
PENNYWISE THE CLOWN FULL BODY SHOT
Courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, we got the full reveal of Bill Skarsgard in his Pennywise costume for the upcoming movie adaptation of Stephen King‘s “IT“. And they are certainly going for a more darker look this time around… I like it(see what I did there).
A HOLMES & WATSON-MOVIE WITH FERRELL AND REILLY?
That’s what is apparently happening. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, who proved to be one of the great comedic double-acts in both “Talladega Nights” and “Step Brothers“, are apparently working on a project where they would be playing Sherlock Holmes(Ferrell) and John Watson(Reilly). The film is to be written and directed by Etan Cohen(writer of “Tropic Thunder”) I say: Bring it!
The only question mark that remains is; will Cohen be able to steer the lunacy of these two as well as Adam McKay managed to do in the two previous films these two starred together(well, technically three as Reilly WAS the ghost of Stonewall Jackson in the second “Anchorman”-film).
COULD THIS BE THE 1ST GOOD “BATMAN”-MOVIE OF THIS YEAR?
Look, let’s not mince words here: Ben Affleck WAS a good Batman, but sadly he made his debut in a piss-poor excuse for a film – and WB Animation completely screwed up their adaptation of “The Killing Joke” with that prologue that pretty much upset everyone(including yours truly), so….
This. Just. Might. Be. It.
SPIT-TAKE OF THE WEEK
A TV-series based on the 1986 film “The Lost Boys” is in the works. Yeah. CW is wrapping up their series “The Vampire Diaries” and is looking to fill that slot with a “Lost Boys“-series under the guidance of Rob Thomas – creator of “Veronica Mars” and “iZombie“. Apparently the series will start in 1967 in San Francisco and for “each season, the humans, the setting, the antagonist and the story all change — only the vampires, our Lost Boys, who like the Peter Pan characters never grow up, remain the same.”
Sound familiar? Different settings, storylines – only the main actors remain the same… Isn’t that kinda like “American Horror Story“?
I dunno – I have kind of mixed feelings about this one: the “Lost Boys“-fan in me is screaming bloody murder but in the other hand… I just didn’t really have nothing else to put in this segment this week, so we work with what we have.
That is all.
