Spinning Headlines – Week 33: Affleck/Christie, Dark Tower, IT, Jean-Claude Van Johnson, Spider-Man, MacGyver, Arrival, Holmes & Watson…

Hiya. Time to take a look at some miscellaneous entertainment news from the week again. I know: Sunday is a bit late release date – if I wanted to make some excuse over just lazying around and watching the Olympics, I’d probably say that I was waiting for the week to be over news-wise.

So…I was waiting for the week to be over news-wise. Let’s get to it. Some short bits first:

First of all, the “truth” over that Dwayne Johnson/Vin Diesel-social media feud came out. Sorta. I guess we can blame the Atlanta heat on that one.

While we’re on the subject of these two bald men, Johnson made this Instagram post to call the end to “Fast 8” shooting and confirmed that he’ll be starting filming on “Jumanji” – and that one will NOT be a reboot, but a sequel.

Finished strong and on to the next. That's an officially wrap on #FastAndFurious8. Thank you to our director @fgarygray for the vision and execution. Thank you UNIVERSAL for being tremendous partners as always, thank you to all my fellow co-stars for the daily effort and grind. Scott Eastwood you handsome sumbitch! Natalie Emmanuel I have a cold Budweiser ready for you and Tyrese Gibson you still have the biggest smile and forehead I've ever seen.😂 And a huge THANK YOU to our hard working production crew – the backbone of our business. Your kind words meant a lot to me last night – thank you! In the end, we all rallied, as great teams do, kicked ass and will deliver an amazing movie to the world. Proud of our entire FAST FAMILY. And now in two weeks I'll reunite with ol' friends Kevin Hart & Jack Black and we have the honor to introduce a whole new generation to the amazing world of #JUMANJI. *(for the record we are NOT making a reboot, but rather a continuation of the awesome JUMANJI story). It's also crazy to me how much me, Kev and Jack look like triplets when we're together. 👶🏽👶🏻👶🏿. Man this is gonna be FUN. #WheelsUp #ThatsAWrap #FromFastAndFurious #StraightIntoJumanji #BigBrownBaldTattooedMan #DarkChocolateComedicRockStar #BrillaintCrazyCurvyCaucasion #TheseHashtagsAreRidiculous #INeedSleepAndCARBS #ButIWillSettleForTequila

And Diesel stated in a Facebook Live Session, that the Guardians of the Galaxy will indeed be featured in “Avengers: Infinity War”. We’ll just call that the “DUH” of the week.

Second – to no ones surprise whatsoever, it seems that the “Ben-Hur“-remake is going to be a massive box-office flop. To someone who saw a couple of trailers of that “epic”, I can’t say I’m surprised.

Apparently Ben Affleck is not working exclusively at Warner Brothers now, as 20th Century Fox announced that Affleck will be directing and starring in a movie adaptation of Agatha Christie‘s short story “Witness for the Prosecution“. The film, written by Christopher Keyser, tells the story of “a trial involving a man arrested for the murder of an older woman who named the man as her sole heir. The man, it turns out, was already married, which casts a great deal of suspicion on him. During the trial, his wife agrees to testify for the prosecution, albeit as part of a convoluted plan to eventually secure a “Not Guilty” verdict.”

But – surprise surprise; this WILL be a remake, as Billy Wilder already directed this one in a 1957 film starring Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton. And even nailed 6 Academy Award-nominations for it. Not too shabby. So Affleck has some major boots to fill with this one. One interesting aspect about this remake is also that Matt Damon will be on board as a co-producer at least; it’s been a while since the “Will Hunting“-team has been back together…

Well, not quite. But you have to wonder the coincidence that after Sylvester Stallone reprised his part of Rocky Balboa for the seventh time in “Creed“, Robert DeNiro – the star of that other great boxing-film, “Raging Bull” – is now ALSO appearing in a boxing film as an ageing mentor. The film is called “Hands of Stone” and it tells the story of Roberto Duran (Edgar Ramirez) and Sugar Ray Leonard’s (Usher Raymond) rivalry. DeNiro plays Duran’s cornerman, Ray Arcel. Official logline for the film:

HANDS OF STONE follows the life of Roberto Duran (Edgar Ramirez), the Panamanian fighter who made his professional debut in 1968 as a 16 year-old and retired in 2002 at the age of 50. In June 1980, he defeated Sugar Ray Leonard (Usher Raymond) to capture the WBC welterweight title, but shocked the boxing world by returning to his corner in their November rematch, famously saying the words “no mas” (no more.)

That first one is the courtesy of actor Tom Taylor, who plays the character of Jake Chambers, and it looks like some sort of teaser poster design. Those who know the books know what the sentence means. Other stills featuring Taylor as well as Idris Elba can be seen HERE.

And she will be played by Disney Channel-star Zendaya (“Shake It Up!”, “K.C. Undercover”). Now, keep in mind that this is still just an unconfirmed rumor. She HAS been cast in the film, but there are now apparently some hints that her character name “Michelle” might in fact be a cover name for Mary Jane.  And – of course – some smarmy reporters have already stated that this will surely again spark another bout of nerd rage, as just about EVERY casting-news in the superhero-films tends to do.

Me, personally? I have never seen anything that she’s in, but as it is now Marvel Studios taking creative control in the things “Spider-Man” – and NOT Sony – I trust their instincts. Also, this would mean that they are NOT going for the Gwen Stacy-saga for the 3rd time, which is probably good. They completely fucked that up in the Sam Raimi-continuum, and then it ended up being one of the FEW things they actually got right in the Marc Webb-years.

Remember that first trailer for the CBS reboot-series of “MacGyver”? That – to be perfectly honest – looked LAME in all accounts. And as was reported a while ago, the studio kinda felt the same and asked the series producer James Wan to film an entirely new pilot from scratch. Now the trailer of the NEW pilot is out and it looks…a whole lot better. Sure – the show looks way more like a “Mission; Impossible“-style team effort now instead of focusing on the lone hero, but who knows? And they made Lucas Till‘s hairdo look a lot more like the “classic” MacGyver-mullet instead of that whatever-the-hell-it-was Grunge-hair in the previous trailer.

The trailers that have come up this week on the Netflix Jean-Claude Van Damme-starring series “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” have me intrigued. It seems that this is sort of following in the spirit of Van Damme’s self irony/parody-performance in the movie “JCVD“. Which is definitely a good thing. And the reviews of the pilot have been very good. Color me intrigued on this one.

…and that’s about all that’s known at this point; Jared Leto is the latest actor to join the Denis Villeneuve-directed “Blade Runner“-sequel. Maybe he’ll get some actual screentime in this one? Although the cast is already pretty hefty, consisting of Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Carla Juri, Mackenzie Davis, Barkhad Abdi, David Dastmalchian, Hiam Abbass, Lennie James, and Dave Bautista.

But… You know what I’d want? Edward Motherfucking James Olmos back as Gaff. Hell – make him be the new boss in Bryant’s place. But that’s just me I guess….

…remember that relly cool-looking teaser for his upcoming Alien Invasion-movie “Arrival“? This week we got the FULL trailer and HOLY SHEET does it look intriguing. Like my fellow contributor on the site, Detective Dee, said; it could be that Villeneuve will once again save the end of the movie year.

Courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, we got the full reveal of Bill Skarsgard in his Pennywise costume for the upcoming movie adaptation of Stephen King‘s “IT“. And they are certainly going for a more darker look this time around… I like it(see what I did there).

That’s what is apparently happening. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, who proved to be one of the great comedic double-acts in both “Talladega Nights” and “Step Brothers“, are apparently working on a project where they would be playing Sherlock Holmes(Ferrell) and John Watson(Reilly). The film is to be written and directed by Etan Cohen(writer of “Tropic Thunder”) I say: Bring it!

The only question mark that remains is; will Cohen be able to steer the lunacy of these two as well as Adam McKay managed to do in the two previous films these two starred together(well, technically three as Reilly WAS the ghost of Stonewall Jackson in the second “Anchorman”-film).

Look, let’s not mince words here: Ben Affleck WAS a good Batman, but sadly he made his debut in a piss-poor excuse for a film – and WB Animation completely screwed up their adaptation of “The Killing Joke” with that prologue that pretty much upset everyone(including yours truly), so….

This. Just. Might. Be. It.

A TV-series based on the 1986 film “The Lost Boys” is in the works. Yeah. CW is wrapping up their series “The Vampire Diaries” and is looking to fill that slot with a “Lost Boys“-series under the guidance of Rob Thomas – creator of “Veronica Mars” and “iZombie“. Apparently the series will start in 1967 in San Francisco and for “each season, the humans, the setting, the antagonist and the story all change — only the vampires, our Lost Boys, who like the Peter Pan characters never grow up, remain the same.

Sound familiar? Different settings, storylines – only the main actors remain the same… Isn’t that kinda like “American Horror Story“?

I dunno – I have kind of mixed feelings about this one: the “Lost Boys“-fan in me is screaming bloody murder but in the other hand… I just didn’t really have nothing else to put in this segment this week, so we work with what we have.

That is all.

Someone film Harrison Ford opening up Leto’s method actor gifts of used condoms and dead rats or whatever.

I should feature this, but I usually wait for at least ten comments

But I just mean – that cast list already looks like a lot more people than was in Suicide Squad.

  • Dee-abolik

Call me crazy, but the concept of Lost Boy doesn’t sound too bad.

  • I_am_better

Like I said: I have mixed feelings. Not all of them necessarily bad

  • Dee-abolik

“smarmy reporter”….probably one whose name rhymes with “Apache”?

  • I_am_better

Nnno. Just someone who made the under-headline blurb of “Cue OCD fanboy freakout in 3…2…1…”

I felt that was a little repugnant

  • Dee-abolik

The Apache guy wrote the same, actually.

  • Foster Breadford

You suspect it will deplete his stockpiles?

  • I_am_better

Holy shit. There’s a bunch of biters going around

  • Foster Breadford

This could easily so pass as a spoof in a comedy about movie studios.

  • I_am_better

You saying it had StudioHEAD potential?

  • I_am_better

We’ll have to wait and see. THIS one I think I’ll see in the theater

  • It’s gonna be interesting to see how bad they get Lost Boys wrong.

I lasted almost two episodes of that Omen tv series.

  • I_am_better

    Oh. That good, huh

  • Bop

Bring On Jean-Claude Van Johnson. Loved JCVD.

  • Bop

Oh, and Pennywise looks certified lame. What the fuck is up with Hollywood these days? Who greenlights pennywise’s look?

  • I_am_better

I dunno about that. What I’ve seen over the last years is that these Entertainment Weekly-photoshoots never give any real tangible clue as to what the final look will be.

  • Dee-abolik

    I can dig it actually.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

Zendaya as Mary Jane – I’m not gonna start on this nonsense again. My head might explode. And I’m deeply suspicious that this particular piece of casting is Sony-mandated. Sounds like the kind of thing Tom Rothman or Amy Pascal would insist upon.

Pennywise – Surprisingly, I like the new design.

Jared Leto joins Blade Runner sequel – More like Jared Leto joins the Blade Runner “remake/reboot”.

The Dark Tower – Next year’s Ghostbusters. Hopefully, it will mean the end of Sony Pictures Entertainment – the worst Hollywood studio by far – once and for all.

Lost Boys TV series – When people enthuse over the “golden age of TV”, I point to things like this and laugh.

  • KilliK

    I dreamt I was a butterfly.

  • KilliK

I take it you read the news about the auditioning for the female lead in the Solo spinoff.

  • KilliK

From what I have read, he doesnt work solo in this reboot, he has a whole team with him. It’s Team Knight Rider all over again. sigh..

  • KilliK

I thought Zathura was the sequel to Jumanji.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

Yep. And Solo’s black ex-wife already appears in the new Marvel comics run.

  • KilliK

I wonder when will be the time when the media/SWJ/leftist realize that all the white heroes end up having black girlfriends but none of the black heroes/secondary characters have white girlfriends. And they will start screaming about that, while adding a new “diversity” headache for the studios to take care. it will be hilarious to witness.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

I spotted someone complaining about this on AICN a couple of days ago, actually. He claimed that this trend was another example of white supremacy and that the notion of white men having relationships with women of color onscreen was feeding into “plantation mentality”!

Holy shit. You cannot reason with zealots. Nothing will please them.

  • Dead ass serious? Who posted that shit?
Now that’s hysterical! Where i work, (NYC) I see plenty of White men dating the Sistas. It’s not about “Plantation mentality”, but liking/loving that person regardless of color.
Black,White Hispanic, etc. I could care less because as long as you look good and have a Pussy, it’s all good!!

  • His wife looks hotter than Leia!
    Jus sayin.

  • Fucking Freeman is in EVERYTHING!

  • Dee-abolik

I agree. I guess to Han the “…you never go back” part doesn’t apply.

  • That’s Han’s loss! He shouldve done what I did at least: go back n forth.

  • Slate_Fistcrunch

You fucking bullies! You made poor Rister run away crying.

    *Scroll up a couple comments.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

But Carrie was hot back in the day, too! Now she looks like the Crypt Keeper, of course… XD

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

What the hell is wrong with that guy? He appears to have some serious issues and/or hold long-standing grudges. I don’t know why he’s still blaming K and I for his lack of posts/articles, as neither of us ever did or said anything bad to him personally. We questioned the validity of his reports and attacked Abrams generally. That’s all. If it takes so little to upset him, perhaps he should wrap himself in cotton wool and just avoid the internet all together.

And you’re right: he DID, with 100% assuredness, claim multiple things that didn’t pan out. TFA WAS, at that time, going to begin with an opening sequence of a hand in space; Abrams has himself confirmed it. Well, I guess the final cut didn’t, so “technically” that means ER was correct…

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

Some idiot whose name I cannot recall. Not a regular poster.

He also claimed that white men having relations with black women has always been accepted by society throughout history (not true) and that you never see the opposite (also not true; in fact, I’d say white females are more often seen with a black partner than the other way around).

“It’s not about “Plantation mentality”, but liking/loving that person regardless of color.”

Exactly. No idiot with an agenda is going to tell me, or anyone else, who we can or cannot date. Fuck ’em! How warped do you have to be to consider such a thing a master/slave relationship?

“Black,White Hispanic, etc. I could care less because as long as you look good and have a Pussy, it’s all good!!”

Amen! All flavors are good and there to be sampled. Slurp!

  • When I think of the variety of women I have sampled when I was single, this song often comes to mind..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oz3z33Zyg3s

  • Is Rister that Marty guy? They both sound alike.

  • Dee-abolik

No, Rister is Rister and Marty is Marty.

  • I remember hearing Rister on Nick’s podcast, ergo i got him confused with Marty because they sound somewhat simular.

  • Dee-abolik

    no, different people

  • Slate_Fistcrunch

No. Marty is fun, doesn’t fetishize children’s movies and could probably admit if he made a mistake.

  • Slate_Fistcrunch

I learned it from watching you alright?!

  • Toruk_Makto

‘for the record we are NOT making a reboot,”
As always, Dwayne is pretty up to date on current events and the temperature of his audience. Yes, Dwayne…your insight serves you well…most of us are fucking over Reboots and Remakes…we’re so fucking over it.

I now call upon the digital entity that is the Internet. Hahummmmm….

Keep the pressure on baby…let’s make it so that Hollywood becomes fucking terrified of even mentioning the words Reboot/Remake. Let’s keep sending these fuckers to the bargain basement bin!

This weeks sacrifice: Ben-Hur…fuck you! Not even Morgan Freeman could save your ass.

  • I_am_better
  • Toruk_Makto

Sony’s movie division can’t die soon enough. Die. Die. Die.

When I finally hear the news I will dance the jig in the streets.

  • In Layman’s terms You learned from the best! (:’

  • KilliK

Black,White Hispanic, etc. I could care less because as long as you look good and have a Pussy, it’s all good!!

    Body Count?

  • KilliK

actually, her drawing is awful. Look at her face. I cant figure out if she is supposed to be a human or a puma-looking alien.

  • Good call! Yup, I paraphrased that line “As long as you look good and gt a pussy, we will fuck you”! ! Was a huge BC listener back in the day and KKK Bitch was one of the funniest songs from their debut album; Cop Killer.

  • Toruk_Makto

I don’t like it either. What do you feel is wrong with it?

  • Dee-abolik

If you are from Mars…we don’t care!

  • KilliK

wow! the guy has real issues. We never attacked him personally, only called him out for his false “insider” info. Any time we were doing that, he was whining that he is not our “enemy”. I think his problem has more to do with us hating JarJar, than disputing him.

  • KilliK

still have that album on cd. the unrated version.

  • KilliK

yep. or that BB8 wont carry a map in the movie, which ofc this is what actually happened. or that Lucas sold all his Disney stock, so he wont receive any profit from TFA’s success, which also is not true.

and he stopped writing in SN, because of two commenters? really? I am surprised he can still write in the troll hive that is AICN, without cutting his wrists.

  • Slate_Fistcrunch

That whole claim he was going to actually write for the site is suspect. I was never told that he had planned to do any writing and I’d be willing to bet Dee never heard anything either.

  • CoolHandJuke

i hope the Lost Boys show focuses on the saxophone player and all the bitches he banged that he didn’t love…

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

It’s apparent from reading his full rants in that thread that the fellow is delusional – and I mean delusional on the level of that other sociopath who used to post here and was banned. He seems to think he’s an authority and that we should all know who he is and be well informed about his past history.

Rister mentions you, me and Asi, and accuses us of personally bullying him based on some imagined slight. He again ignorantly raises the ugly specter of “anti-semitism” in relation to our criticism of Abrams and proceeds to go on a weird tangential rant about Walt Disney being falsely accused of anti-semitism and blacklisting communists; he mentions not wanting to associate with certain people – presumably us – in case he’s accused of the same.

He also infers that you and I are one and the same person (where have we heard that before?), threatens to dox personal information, and talks about how he intended to post pictures of his payslips to prove he is (or was) a Disney employee…or something. I honestly couldn’t get a handle on what he was really trying to say there. He even discusses personally e-mailing big names like Roger Ebert and Meryl Streep to take them to task for criticizing Disney in any small way! Insult Disney, or anyone associated with them, at your peril, apparently (this is his real beef with our criticism of JJ).

He didn’t stop writing at the SN because of us; that’s just an excuse and all on him. I disagreed with many of Rister’s posts for perfectly good reasons, but I always assumed him to be a fairly level-headed and sensible person and certainly didn’t bear him any ill will; nor did I ever treat him with any personal disrespect (Slate posted a link to prove this). After reading his litany of self-regarding nonsense, however, it’s clear he’s a fruitcake. I shan’t be replying to him in future. I’ve no time for strange, paranoid, passive-aggressive people.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

Exactly. I never heard anything about that, either. I think he’s just seeking attention in retrospect by claiming these things. And yet, by the sound of what you were saying, he poked constant fun at that kid who used to review here and thus discouraged him from writing further articles. What a POS. Is he seriously lecturing others on what they can or cannot write? That’ll be damn right.

BTW, thanks to you and Dee for defending K and I in that thread and exposing his hypocrisy.

  • Dee-abolik

    I did not.

  • Dee-abolik

To be honest, it was less to defend anyone -pointless in the web- but to point out the twisting of facts. I thought it was a weird forum to announce something like that before telling anyone of us and even weirder to base it on this very warped reasons.

  • KilliK

holy shit! I am reading his other posts right now. the dude is out of his fucking mind. Talking shit about us behind our back, attacking even poor Asimov, playing the victim card, crying for “anti-semitism”.

jesus. and like you, I had a high opinion of the guy, I considered him one of the more rational people to have an interesting conversation with, that’s why I never wanted to troll him like I do with the idiots in AICN. something that I had explained to him in the past numerous times, whenever he felt that I was “attacking” him.

But after this outburst, fuck him. The gloves are off. Rogue1 will soon be here and he wont resist to grace us with his presence to shill for his beloved Disney, so he will get what is coming for him then.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

He’s been on this strange self-pitying trip for quite some time. I’ve explained to him several times over that I’ve never attacked or insulted him personally or called him a liar as he seems to believe, only pointed out that his claims are often contradicted by official media sources.

I thought he’d taken my explanation onboard and let the matter drop, but apparently he’s still butthurt. I was shocked and annoyed to see him continue to spread these misconceptions to others – often apropos of nothing.

  • KilliK

wait, was that the kid writing the animated movies tribute articles? I always enjoyed those. he stopped writing them because of Ernest??
now I am getting really angry.

  • Slate_Fistcrunch

I don’t know if he stopped directly because of Rister, but I had to encourage the lad on IM to try and ignore Rister’s shit. He was still pretty young and hadn’t developed a thick skin yet.

  • KilliK

you are right, HW seems to have wised up and are now more careful with their PR: they dress the remakes/reboots as sequels/prequels.

The Thing remake/prequel, the Nu Trek erased/alternate timeline, TFA as a soft reboot of the series and a remake of ANH , and with the announced casting of Blade Runner 2 so far, looks like it will also be a remake pretending to be a sequel.

    fuck this shit.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

“I considered him one of the more rational people to have an interesting discussion with”

Yeah, he had me fooled, too. I think he’s genuinely emotionally unstable. It wouldn’t surprise me if many of the claims he’s made about himself have been lies. Whether they are or aren’t, I couldn’t care less. From now on, I consider him just another troll regardless, like so many of the ones we’ve encountered before. And he will be dealt with like a miserable troll, if he tries to start any more of his shit.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

Yes, it was – Matthias. And while it’s not certain, as Slate says below, that that’s why Matthias ceased posting here, Ernest is still unrepentant about his unpleasant treatment toward him (including mocking and bullying him on FB behind his back) – simply because he got a few technical details wrong in a Roger Rabbit article. Apparently thinks it will “toughen him up” and cause him to “think twice” about fact-checking before posting future reviews.

And this clown has the temerity to call us bullies for calling out some erroneous insider info and mocking a terrible director? Jesus. His behavior is an example of real bullying toward someone younger and more vulnerable – an easy target.

  • Toruk_Makto

They can run but they can’t hide.

We’ll keep sending them to the shitter until they get the goddamn message:

  • Bop

Looks too girlish. Not menacing at all.

  • Steven Dean

Get over yourself, you talentless, anti-Semitic, creep.

Why do you have no meaningful relationships with women?
