Glenn Frey RIP, "Doctor Strange"-casting, "Thor Ragnarok" details, "Avatar 2" delayed further, Terminator terminated - again, HBO's "Westworld" on a production hiatus, Jet Li... Spinning Headlines – Week 3: Doctor Strange, Thor Ragnarok, Avatar 2, Terminator, Westworld, xXx3, Paul Verhoeven…

Hello again. We get to the end of the third week of 2016, and just to show that it’s still an evil a-hole, this week the year 2016 deprived us from another great talent. So let’s have a moment of silence for the memory of Glenn Frey, who passed away this week. The man was a founding member of the Eagles, and also a contributor to many a soundtrack, as well as an occasional actor.

As always, check out our “News”-section for daily updates – this week we got everything from the first clips of the in-production “Wonder Woman”-movie to confirmation that Tom Cruise is now officially attached to the upcoming “Mummy”-reboot (or is it “reboot-reboot”?) from Universal.

What else? Let’s start with a couple of Marvel news:

“DOCTOR STRANGE” ADDS BENEDICT WONG

wong

Almost every site seems to be making some puns about “adding a second Benedict” or “wong as wong” or some such in their headlines. I know – I’m known for making bad puns all the time, but for once I’ll just report it as it is: Benedict Wong (“Prometheus”, “The Martian”, “Marco Polo”) has been cast in “Doctor Strange as Stephen Strange’s sidekick/servant, Wong. Wong comes from a family of monks, and is a master martial artist, has great knowledge of the dark arts, though he has no magical powers of his own. He also is tasked with looking after Strange’s body when he is “astral projecting into other dimensions”.

SOME THOR:RAGNAROK DETAILS

Loki_Hela_HVT

First off, it’s not quite official yet, but it is strongly suggested now that the recently-added-to-the-cast Cate Blanchett will play the villainess of the movie, Hela. In the Marvel Universe, Hela is the ruler of Hel and the realm of Niflheim and “has power over the dead souls of the Nine Realms.” So – pretty badass.

Second, a while back Mark Ruffalo described the film as a sort of “buddy movie” between Banner/Hulk and Thor and this week he gave a little bit more insight into the style of this. He said that “Midnight Run” is a big influence to the film’s style. I personally can’t think of a better influence to be had. Here’s Ruffalo’s full answer he gave to Empire Magazine: “There’s a little bit of Midnight Run, with [Charles] Grodin and [Robert] De Niro…I feel like that’s kind of where we’re heading with this relationship between Thor and Banner…It is a universal road movie – that’s where we’re heading…It’s not where you’d think it will be, so it’s not your classic road movie but it has that structure, I think.” I like what I’m hearing here.

“AVATAR 2” WILL NOT BE FACING “STAR WARS EPISODE VIII” in CHRISTMAS 2017

1397199522

As was reported earlier this week, the next “Star Wars“-sequel was delayed from it’s earlier opening date to Christmas, making it face off James Cameron‘s “Avatar“-sequel. Well, I was sceptic about this rightaway, as there was not even any news of Cameron even starting filming on his movie yet – and now we’ve gotten confirmation from 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm entertainment: in fact it’s reported by several news-sites here, here and here, that the film is pulled from it’s 2017 christmas release window to a non-specific “summer 2018”.

ANOTHER “TERMINATOR” REBOOT TRILOGY CUT SHORT

Kinda not a surprise, this one. Exhibitor Relations broke the news, that Paramount has dropped the sequel to “Terminator: Genisys” (which is for some asinine reason called “Teminator 2”) from it’s planned release slot altogether, replacing it’s planned release date with the Dwayne Johnson-starring “Baywatch“-movie. The official reason is said to be “disappointing grosses”. I guess “because it sucked” was too harsh. Make that the second time a planned trilogy of “Terminator“-movies has been cut short after the first movie tanks. But will this stop them from trying again? Of course not – this is Hollywood, after all.

“xXx3” ADDS CAST

jet-li-kiss-of-the-dragon-620x

The ambitiously titled “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage“, starring Vin Diesel, Samuel L. Jackson, Deepika Padukone (Chennai Express), Nina Dobrev (Vampire Diaries), and Ruby Rose (Orange is the New Black) has a new addition to the cast. Jet Li has closed a deal to play an antagonist to Diesel’s Cage. Apparently, the “xXx”-franchise is now being tooled to more resemble franchises like “Mission; Impossible” and “Fast & Furious“, as it’s said that Cage is now a leader of a team (comprised of the cast mentioned above) and Li will play the leader of an opposing team. Revolution Studios COO Scott Hemming said: “We are extremely excited to have Jet Li join the cast of xXx 3: The Return of Xander Cage as Raif, who is pitted against Vin Diesel’s Xander Cage, and watch these two in action as they raise the bar with some of the most incredible stunts on film.”

The hard hitter from Thailand, Tony Jaa (“Ong Bak 1-3″, “Tom Yum Goong 1-2” and the recent “Furious 7” – with Diesel) is also in.

“xXx 3-2 is written by F. Scott Frazier, and directed by D.J. Caruso.

HBO’S “WESTWORLD” GOES ON BRIEF PRODUCTION HIATUS

WESTWORLD_0

I know, HBO has been having a habit of shutting down productions of shows recently – just ask David Fincher. But it seems that this is not as dramatic as it sounds – seems that it’s just the case of giving the writing team enough time for fine-tuning the remaining scripts, or as HBO said in the official statement: “As we head into the final phase of production on ‘Westworld,’ we’ve made the decision to take a brief hiatus in order to get ahead of the writing.” HBO is still confident that the series will make its targeted premiere date, which has yet to be specified beyond saying it will “air in 2016.”

PAUL VERHOEVEN’S “ELLE” GETS A TRAILER

Well, I’ll be… Looks like the good old Paul Verhoeven is still working. It’s been– what, 10 years since his last theatrical feature “Black Book” and suddenly this week we got dropped by a trailer for “Elle”. and it seems that the man has definitely not mellowed. “Elle” is based on the novel “Oh… by French author Phillippe Dijan and stars Isabelle Huppert. The official synopsis: “Isabelle Huppert plays Michèle, a seemingly indestructible head of a video game company. Her family and love life are not what you would call traditional. She’s divorced and having an affair with her best friend’s husband, while her son’s girlfriend is pregnant with another man’s baby. Her life is forever changed when she’s attacked and raped in her home by an unknown assailant, after which she stalks him to discover his identity, a game that threatens to spiral out of control.” Sounds like a Verhoeven-movie, for sure.

LAUREL & HARDY – ACTORS CAST

Laurel-Hardy

Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly. Those are the two actors, who will play the legendary comedy-duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in an upcoming film written by Jeff Pope (“Philomena“) and directed by Jon S. Baird (“Filth“). The description of the movie’s story goes as follows: “Set in the twilight years of the comedy legends’ career, the film will focus on their farewell tour of Britain’s variety halls in 1953. With their golden era now a distant memory, they’re nevertheless still happy to be working together, and as they keep their partnership alive, they reconnect with legions of adoring fans. But there is a darker undercurrent to the success – their past comes back to haunt them and Hardy isn’t in the best of health. We’ll see how they approach what could be their swan song, and rediscover how much they mean to each other.” Thoughts? I personally think that Reilly is a perfect fit for Hardy, but Coogan is a bit of a mystery still – he doesn’t quite look the type… But then again, we’ll see for sure when we see some footage, amirite?

FOX TO REBOOT “24” WITH “24: LEGACY”

Well, seems like after so many bad days that Jack Bauer has had, he is finally retired (or as those who watched “24: Live Another Day” know, probably spending the rest of his life in a Russian prison). Fox Television is now going full speed ahead with a rebooting of the franchise, titled “24: Legacy” and has given a pilot order to the project from the “24“-creative trio of Howard Gordon, Manny Coto and Evan Katz. The premise of the reboot is that it will “revolve around a military hero’s[written as a twenty-something African-American man named Eric Carter] return to the U.S. and the trouble that follows him back – compelling him to ask CTU for help in saving his life, and stopping what potentially could be one of the largest-scale terror attacks on American soil. ” So – a new lead, but the same old CTU. Thoughts?

SPIT-TAKE OF THE WEEK

daily-show-spit-take

Bad Neighbors 2“-trailer. Riiiight…. The first movie had about one laugh in it, so maybe the second one will have two. Or not.

That is all.

No – Wait!!!!!! It ISN’T! Here’s a last minute UPDATE via Deadline:

Director McG (“Charlies Angels 1-2″, “Terminator Salvation“) is said to be “in negotiations to direct the ‘Masters of the Universe‘-movie”.

I Am Better

Coming from the frozen wastelands of Finnish tundra. Mr. Better seeks warmth from his television & home theater and all the wonders they provide. He occasionally dabbles in the arts of drawing and photography.

  • The baywatch movie, xXx3, and the new Madea movie should fix all the problems with lack of “diversity” at the Oscars next year.

  • I_am_better
  • First Neighbors movie was actually pretty good IMO. Nothing special, but better than I expected.

  • I_am_better

If it was a shortfilm, with only the DeNiro-party, I’d agree

  • Dee

Are we fooling ourselves that Wong did not get the job because of his name?

  • Zed

Calling it now: Avatar 2 will be released November 2018. At the earliest.

Gynysys was the second Terminator movie in a row that was supposed to start a new trilogy. When they try again (probably a hard reboot starring Dwayne Johnson, Miles Teller and some coke whore they found on Hollywood Blvd), it will form a trilogy of failed trilogies.

Couldn’t finish the Neighbors trailer. Looks like a crossover with Bridesmaids.

  • Stalkeye

Neighbors was as funny as The Big Bang. (Meaning; NOT Funny!) Why is there another sequel and most importantly, why is Seth Rogan still in Films? he’s the Adam Sandler for Millennials! A new 24 series with some “Black Bauer”? Shit, they should’ve kept Curtis Manning but the dumb dicks at FOX TV, killed him off!

Cate as Hela? I can see that. Paul Verhoeven can make a film about a Woman taking a Piss and it’ll be great! xXx? No thanks! What the fugg makes Ruby Rose so special?

Benedict Wong and Benedict Cumberbatch? There’s something “wong’ with this.

  • Stalkeye

Just that Bridesmaids was at least funny.

  • Stalkeye

Fuck the Oscars! Aside from the lack of diversity, how the fuck you gonna let Annie Hall beat out Star Wars or Saturday Night Fever as best picture of 77′??? Snobbish Cunts!

  • I_am_better

UPDATE!!! Added an extra piece of news to the end about some disturbing events surrounding the new “Masters of the Universe”-adaptation.

  • Bop

Tony Jaa will also be in XXX 3.

  • I_am_better

Ahh, shit – forgot that. Updated again.

  • KilliK

“when she’s attacked and raped in her home by an unknown assailant”

I bet he uses spit too.

I think Coogan will be a great Lauren, he can nail the antics of a buffoon perfectly.

  • I_am_better

I think the Fox representatives’ only response about “Avatar” has been “James works at his own pace”.

  • KilliK

interstellar travel will be achieved before Avatar 2 comes out.

  • I_am_better

Then they can shoot it on location.

  • KilliK

McG making a He-Man movie wont be any worse than the 80s cheesefest. The problem is that this is a property with great potential, but when you hire a talent-less hack to be your lapdog, well, you just created a missed opportunity for something good.

  • I_am_better

I bet it was between Brett Ratner and McG

  • KilliK

maybe that’s what Jimbo is waiting for?

  • I_am_better

That had about three laughs in it.

  • KilliK

I imagine there is a dartboard in the studio execs conference room, with photos of C-list directors pinned on, like Wiseman, McG,Ratner, PWSA,etc.

Whenever they greenlight a new cash grab movie, they throw a dart at the board and check which photo it hits. the director in that photo is hired to make the movie. that’s how serious business in HW is done.

  • KilliK

Wang would have been better than Wong

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

“As for Avatar 2, I dont know, I am starting to worry that this continuous delay will hurt the sequels in the end.”

I’m not worried at all. I know that Cameron will account for that, and that the movies will, as always, deliver things the audience has never seen before. You can’t compare these to normal sequels, like Sin City 2, which offer no new hooks and just repeat the same thing over and over, to lesser effect and waning audience interest. Cameron will make sure to provide a distinct reason to see each successive sequel, ones that will appeal to general audiences and not just the hardcore fanboys like so many continuing IPs.

The delay will also mean two things: more time for the technology and methods of exhibition to brew (possibly allowing the sequels to be filmed and displayed in 8K); and that the Chinese market will be bigger than ever, with more IMAX, 3D and large format screens being available worldwide. The box office potential will be larger than ever.

In fact, I’m thinking that December 2019 might be a better release date than the previous ones, as it will be the tenth anniversary of Avatar; this is more attention-grabbing for marketing purpose than an arbitrary span of eight or nine. A generation will have grown up in the interim, which will reflect in real-time the inter-generational story displayed in the movies themselves.

    In Jim We Trust.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

“If anything, the reason Disney move the release date for SW8 ,was
because they already knew Avatar was not gonna be ready for the same
    date release.2

This is undoubtedly the case, not the other way around. But biased fanboys will always spin events to fit their narrative, no matter if it defies rhyme or reason.

And their views make even less sense when you consider that Avatar 2 and its follow ups will be going up against Episode IX or other Star Wars movies regardless, if Disney now decides to move all of its planned Star Wars movies to December dates (which seems logical). I cant imagine Episode IX still being released in summer 2019 if the previous one has been moved to December 2017. They’re all going to have at least a year’s breathing space in between, taking the spin-offs into account.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

I don’t think they’ll have time to try again. The property will soon be back in its master’s hands.

  • KilliK

    Let’s hope you are right.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

I hope the motion-captured Orko resembles Cocknose under his hood. Maybe the producers can hire that JJ lookalike from Pacific Rim to play him.

  • Dee

They will drum up interest again, believe me.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

I have no idea what that French trailer was about, but Verhoeven is sadly missed. Hire him for Legend of Conan and make an R-rated bloodbath. If Mad Max can still be R-rated, so can Conan.

  • Kylo Ronin

Verhoeven is back. Midnight Run IN SPACE FTW. And I mean, they can’t replace Kiefer Sutherland, amirite? I mean, that would be like replacing David Hayter for the roles of Solid Snake and Big Boss….

  • Toruk_Makto

I only watched 24 for two reasons. Jack Bauer. and David Palmer.
Now I’m all out of reasons.

    I can’t figure Vin Diesel out. Either he’s a genius…or a moron…I honestly don’t know which.

In the right Hands Master of the Universe could destroy all competition. it could really be a fun movie with a fuck ton of things to play with…..I don’t really see that happening with McG..but who knows.

I’ve got The Stand on the telly, Don’t Dream it’s over is playing, Molly Ringwald is on the screen and I’m thinking; “Man, that’s one sexy lady.”

  • KilliK

well, spit of the week just got beaten with this:

    http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/david-bowies-labyrinth-get-reboot-858487

    ffs..

  • Sagamanus

    “I can’t figure Vin Diesel out. Either he’s a genius…or a moron…I honestly don’t know which.”

    Why can’t it be both?

  • Stalkeye

    DafuQ! This is Blasphemy!
Fucking Hollywood! Its no wonder why more and more ppl are pirating their Shit.

  • Stalkeye

That reminds me, I have to see if this game is any good since I downloaded it to my PS4.

  • Of course Annie Hall deserved the oscar and it’s not hard to understand why! SW fans need to chill.

  • Toruk_Makto
  • Full Frontal Throttle

“I’m not worried at all. I know that Cameron will account for that, and that the movies will, as always, deliver things the audience has never seen before”
Did you seriously just write that? I hope you are talking visually, not story or plot wise, because Avaturd was the most derivative movie of all time, wearing it’s influences openly on it’s sleeves. That whole thread of yours reeks of fan-boy-ism! Off the tip and get a grip!

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

Don’t make me laugh. TFA is the most derivative movie of all time. It shamelessly cannibalized ITS OWN FRANCHISE, in some cases stealing scenes and sequences beat-for-beat. Movies that use broad narrative templates and vaguely reference common tropes are beacons of shining originality by comparison. You can bet the storyline of the sequels will not hew to the predictable or expected, either.

And you knew very well what I meant by “give the audience something they haven’t seen before”, so don’t play dumb. As agreed by almost everybody except biased fanboys, Avatar was technically groundbreaking and provided a unique cinematic experience and stunning visuals – and the sequels will continue that. What did TFA offer? Two hours of A New Hope’s greatest hits with B-level FX and TV pilot-quality direction?

  • Full Frontal Throttle

Man, TFA has really ruffled your feathers. I said nothing about it, just commenting on your double standards. You blindly fan boy Avaturd while putting down others who fan boy their chosen tastes. You are the biggest fan boy around, and one who is the most embarrassing.

  • KilliK

he only corrected your false, ironic and idiotic statement that Avatar is the most derivative movie of all time. You are simply wrong. That “honor” goes to TFA for obvious reasons. So next time, you want to talk about the most derivative film of all time, point out to the correct one: TFA. it’s not hard to remember it, TFA.

  • Full Frontal Throttle

I was wondering how long it would take you to come to your boyfriends defense. I thought you weren’t responding to me anymore? Told you you wouldn’t last. You two fan boys can’t stand it that as bad as you want to put the crown of most derivative movie of all time onto someone else, it just won’t ever happen. Avaturd will always hold that top honor! Believe that.

  • KilliK

are you drunk? You thought I wasnt responding to you? I cant even remember who the fuck you are. just some other anonymous, hateful fanboy who gets his ass pwned. dont make the mistake that you are something more than that. cheerio.

  • Full Frontal Throttle

Lol. You always amuse me mate. I am glad to see you still get your butt hurt so easily. Go rematch Avaturd for the 100th time and keep telling yourself how original it is. See ya,

  • KilliK

    yawn

  • Tarmac492.1

you might be a genius. or i might just be a drunk. maybe a bit of both

  • Tarmac492.1

    never change 🙂

  • Tarmac492.1

i really loved Ford in it

  • Tarmac492.1

    im drunk 🙂

  • Tarmac492.1

    sup???

  • KilliK

and I am ill. cold. :/

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

Yes, TFA has really ruffled my feathers by stalling at nearly a billion dollars short of Avatar’s worldwide box office gross.

The only thing that truly ruffled my feathers about Abrams’s shitty movie was how badly it turned out – even worse than expected – and how disgracefully it pissed on Lucas’s legacy.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

    “are you drunk?”

I think he must be. Well, it is the weekend.

FFT seems to veer periodically between a reasonable, composed personality and a demented, ranting one; almost like a schizophrenic. Assuming he isn’t possessed of any mental health issues, the only explanation can be that he’s sober when he posts in the former guise and on the sauce when he posts in the latter.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

    But, unlike some, still coherent.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

Too bad Abrams cut off his nuts before time, then! Fuck him for that.

  • Full Frontal Throttle

Time to put baby to bed

  • Full Frontal Throttle

Your fan boy hate is legendary. Such jealousy, let it go son, let it go

  • Full Frontal Throttle

    You are so bitter

  • Full Frontal Throttle

They don’t want to compete with Star Wars period! Deal with it

  • KilliK

btw, Turd, I was just listening to Collider’s podcast in which they were talking about the Avatar 2’s delay. For a bunch of journalists or movie buffs or what the fuck they call themselves, they surely were completely oblivious with their facts.

They were talking about how the FOX studio chickened out and were forced to change the release date, and made a joke about how the suits would bring the bad news to Jim. Of course, the fact that there was no official date released by FOX prior to the SW announcement, somehow alludes them.

One gal also mentioned that she had inside info that it was Jim who proposed to Disney to move SW8 to the Christmas slot (that actually might be true) . Then they went on about how Star Wars will own from now on all the Christmas holidays, and that the Avatar sequels will have to find some other month for their releases. They suggested September, October and even Earth Day because of its ecological message (sigh).

They talked about how there are no Avatar cosplayers (typical) but there must be people who want to see them, because after all it did make billions. (duh) The most hilarious thing was when someone claimed that it was only the 3D visuals which made the original Avatar the success it was, and backed it up by saying that it did poorly in the bluray sales (when in reality, it broke records).

Anyway, you can listen to the podcast, it’s in the first 10m where they talk about Avatar and SW:

    http://collider.com/collider-movie-talk-avatar-2-delayed/

it’s just amazing how these people work in a major movie site, where they post news, reviews, interviews, podcasts and all that, but they are so fucking clueless.

  • Toruk_Makto

Like raiders from a dystopian future they are going through the catalog of the past volume by volume stealing anything they can render as currency back in their vapid and decimated world.

  • Stalkeye

Hey, S! How the fuck are ye during this beautiful “spring” weather? XD
I hope you have plenty of drinks and snacks stocked in your pantry. Its a brutal mess outside!!

  • Stalkeye

HAH I saw what you did thar!

  • Dee

Same as everywhere, pandering to the boring popular opinion.

  • Full Frontal Throttle

Justify all you want, Avaturd still derivative. Star Wars 1 – Avaturd 0

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

Fuck those ignorant, biased imbeciles. I pay no attention to any of that stuff. It’s all white noise and history will have the last laugh, regardless. I long ago gave up reading or listening to opinion pieces, articles or podcasts by the likes of Faraci, Harry and the AICN mob, Collider, McWeeny, or any of the other self-appointed voices of “geekdom”. They possess no integrity or scruples, favor emotional bias over logic, promote agendas, and know far less about their subject matter than I do. So why bother?

Their hatred is music to my ears, anyway. The continuing attempts to downplay – and even outright lie (I would love to slap the shit out of that fucker who claimed Avatar sold poorly on Blu when, in fact, it is the biggest selling title in the format of all time) – about Avatar’s success in favor of praising Star Wars simply tells me that the fanboys are still threatened by, and jealous of, the former. Avatar remains the biggest movie in the world and they know it. And the sequels will crush everything in their path. That is something they also fear.

As with so many times before, I have no doubts whatsoever that Cameron will triumph. The fact that these idiots unwittingly place him in the underdog position over and over again just renders that inevitable process all the more amusing and entertaining for me.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

I’m afraid not. Star Wars died the day Lucas signed it over to the whoremasters. Call this new monstrosity what you like, but it isn’t Star Wars.

  • KilliK

well said. I would put in your list of reprehensible film “journalists”, this guy from Forbes too. His articles are annoying at least, with the way he distorts facts, makes ridiculous predictions and unfairly criticizes films. In his latest artcile, he downplays the failure of TFA to break Avatar’s world record, his reasoning is that the dollar has become stronger since Avatar came out (an argument I see getting mentioned in other movie sites too), and his final apology that “it’s ok if SW didnt break the record”. Of course if the movie had succeeded in that, they would have erected a golden statue for Cocknose. here is his artcile:

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2016/01/22/box-office-star-wars-the-force-awakens-isnt-topping-avatar-worldwide-and-thats-okay/#293887a05ca6

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

Yeah, I’ve read some of that guy’s articles before. He seems to pull numbers out of his ass and make all kinds of ridiculous, unquantifiable speculations. I think he was one of those predicting a $300 million domestic OW and $3 billion worldwide gross for TFA, too.

TFA failed to beat Avatar by almost a billion because of a “strong” dollar to foreign currency ratio? Pull the other one! The reason is simply that Star Wars has no standing in certain markets. That’s nothing to do with economic fluctuations. The margin between the two movies is huge in many territories.

  • Frimmel

Yes. An R-rated not at all “PC” Conan movie with blood and gore and tits and Conan in all of his “toxic masculinity” drinking brawling wenching stealing killing awesomeness. I don’t understand how they keep messing up Conan on screen. I guess it is the usual case of folks thinking they’re above the material along with no one in Hollywood as the testicles for it. No one brave enough to endure the feminist outrage machine if they actually did it right.

  • Tarmac492.1

sup brother. whiskey kept me nice and warm

  • Turd Has Escaped the Gravy

Having ruminated on the upcoming box office battle between Episodes VIII and IX and the Avatar sequels, I daresay that Abrams and his minions will, in the end, steal more grosses from a public that swallows mediocrity like so much chicken-feed. It’s a sad world we live in, friend.
