Spinning Headlines – Week 22: Rogue One, IT, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Doc Savage, Daniel Craig, Sicario 2, Cars 3…
Hi there. Time for that end-of-the-week News extravaganza. As always, check out the “News”-section for other news updates. This week we learned that the Marvel “Planet Hulk”-storyline may be incorporated at least partially to “Thor: Ragnarok”, and possibly even beyond. And The Imitation Game”-director Morten Tyldum is attached to a time-traveling serial killer-story “The Shining Girls”.
ROGUE ONE AND THE LACK OF RUMOR CONTROL
“DISNEY EXECS HATE ‘ROGUE ONE’ – MASSIVE RESHOOTS COMING”, “EXECS DO NOT HATE THE FILM – RESHOOTS ONLY TO ADJUST THE FILMS TONE”, “CHRISTOPHER MCQUARRIE TO OVERSEE ‘ROGUE ONE’-RESHOOTS”, “MCQUARRIE NOT OVERTAKING THE ‘ROGUE ONE’-RESHOOTS”, “RESHOOTS TO ADD YOUNG HAN SOLO-ACTOR INTO THE MOVIE”, “THEY WILL RESHOOT 40% OF THE MOVIE” and so on and so forth. Those are just few of the hundreds of different headlines we’ve seen on the web since the story broke out that “Rogue One: a Star Wars Story” will have some reshoots. And I’m not gonna link a single one of those to this article. You wanna know why? Because I sense it’s 99% fucking clickbait-bullshit.
Rumor Control – here are the facts: “Rogue One” will have some reshoots. And those were scheduled even before a single scene was shot.
And that’s it.
Name one big-budget studio movie that hasn’t – in the recent years. And yet, everybody loses their minds and all these “unnamed sources” suddenly appear and start to act like doomsday prophets. I’ve fucking had it.
The time to ask was before running the story.
The difference between blogging and journalism, folks.

GILLIAN ANDERSON JOINS “AMERICAN GODS”
— Bryan Fuller (@BryanFuller) June 3, 2016
As the tweet from Bryan Fuller states, he is overjoyed to work with his “Hannibal” star Gillian Anderson again on his Starz TV adaptaion of Neil Gaiman‘s “American Gods“…
STEPHEN KING’S “IT” FOUND IT’S PENNYWISE
After some rumors of Will Poulter being the frontrunner to play the evil clown-like nemesis in the New Line Cinema-adaptation of the Stephen King-novel a while back, the OFFICIAL casting news finally hit. Pennywise will be played by “Hemlock Grove“-actor Bill Skarsgard of the Swedish Skarsgard-dynasty consisting of father Stellan, and sons Alexander, Gustaf and Valter who are also actors (there are also two sisters and a couple of half-brothers, so we won’t be running out of Skarsgards any time soon).
Other actors set to appear in the Andy Muschietti-directed film are Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs and Jeremy Ray Taylor. They are definitely going with a cast of unknowns here. Might actually be a good thing-
DANIEL DAY-LEWIS AND PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON TO REUNITE?
Well this is surely interesting. It seems that after another long break from acting since he starred – and bagged another Oscar for it – in Steven Spielberg‘s “Lincoln“, Daniel Day-Lewis might be ready to take on another film again. And it would be with his “There Will Be Blood” director Paul Thomas Anderson. The details are scarce at best – which is not unusual for Anderson’s productions – but the rumor is that the film will be set in 1950s New York and revolve around the fashion industry. And I think that’s plenty of information already. As we all know, the outlines for Anderson’s films usually turn out to become something else entirely. Just like “TWBB” was about “oil”. And “The Master” was “about Scientology”.
See? The truth is the film could be about anything. But Day-Lewis & Anderson together again? Hell – I’m sold.
“CAPTAIN MARVEL” LEAD ACTRESS & DIRECTOR-CANDIDATES
Marvel Studios is starting to gear up the “Captain Marvel“-movie now, and this week saw the first real news about who they could possibly be going for as both the star and director. There IS a script, which was written by Nicole Perlman(“Guardians of the Galaxy”) and Meg LeFauve(“Inside Out”). Now – I know a lot of people who were looking for Emily Blunt to be cast as Carole Danvers aka. “Captain Marvel” – an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident, resulting with the super powers of strength, energy projection and flight – but it seems that the studio has now set their sights on Brie Larson, whose career got a major boost from winning the Oscar this year for “The Room”.
And the two directors in the current shortlist of candidates include Jennifer Kent(“The Babadook”) and Niki Caro(“Whale Rider”). So, as Marvel stated a while back, they are definitely going with an all-female creative team for this. And all the power to them. Let’s just hope that whoever they pick will be able to deal with the creative “think-tank” of the studio properly and not join the list of former casualties that has names like Edgar Wright and Patty Jenkins in it.
SOME STORYBOARD’S FROM RAIMI’S SCRAPPED “SPIDER-MAN 4” CONFIRMED AN OLD RUMOR
This was a story that is sort of cool and bittersweet at the same time. As we all recall, before Sony decided to reboot the “Spider-Man”-franchise for the first time, Sam Raimi had been developing a fourth movie for quite some time. And one rumor that was persistent was that Bruce Campbell might be cast as the villain Mysterio. See that would have been a nice wrap-up of his weird appearances in all the three previous movies as completely different characters – which Peter for some reason doesn’t really notice.
Well, this week storyboard artist Jeffrey Henderson published some of his storyboards he made for the movie, and there it is:
Also included were some action shots of the Vulture(who was planned to be portrayed by John Malkovich) – which may be relevant now as the buzz is Vulture will be featured in the nex reboot, “Spider-Man: Homecoming”:

DWAYNE JOHNSON CONTINUES TO BE THE BUSYEST ACTOR IN HOLLYWOOD
The Rock keeps rolling. As he already has about a million projects in the works from “Baywatch” to “Fast 8” to “Rampage” to “Jumanji”-reboot to a possible “San Andreas”-sequel and a “Big Trouble in Little China”-remake and the Robert Ludlum Cinematic Universe, it was announced that he will ALSO be portraying Doc Savage in the long-in-development Shane Black-project. Here’s the announcement for that:
I guess he doesn’t sleep.
A short bio on Doc Savage for those who don’t know what the hell the character is about: “Doc Savage’s real name is Clark Savage, Jr. He was a physician, scientist, adventurer, inventor, explorer, researcher, and, as revealed in The Polar Treasure, a musician. A team of scientists assembled by his father deliberately trained his mind and body to near-superhuman abilities almost from birth, giving him great strength and endurance, a photographic memory, a mastery of the martial arts, and vast knowledge of the sciences. Doc is also a master of disguise and an excellent imitator of voices.”
I GUESS THIS CONFIRMS THOSE DANIEL CRAIG-RUMORS…
Daniel Craig just filled his schedule pretty well so that pretty much puts the lid on those James Bond-plans once and for all. The Showtime-series based on Jonathan Franzen novel “Purity”, which Craig is set to star in, just got a two-season, 20-episode order with filming set to get underway in 2017. Filmmaker Todd Field will co-write and executive produce as well as direct the entire series. The novels official synopsis goes like this:
“PURITY is a morally complex story of youthful idealism, extreme loyalty and cold-blooded murder. Jonathan Franzen’s intricately plotted novel is populated by characters both hungry for the truth and desperate to hide it. From STASI offspring to Oakland anarchists, Franzen tracks his characters’ landscapes as varied as East Berlin, the Bolivian jungle, East Harlem walk-ups, and the California Redwoods. PURITY is at once supremely ambitious in scope and intensely intimate in its treatment of character – a decades-spanning tragicomedy that builds to a contemporary climax.”
“SICARIO 2” GOT A DIRECTOR
Italian filmmaker Stefano Sollima(“Gomorrah”) will direct the sequel to last year’s “Sicario” – now titled “Soldado“. The film is said to focus on the character played by Benicio Del Toro in the first film. Josh Brolin is also expected to return – but Emily Blunt will not, which is a major bummer. The producers of the film, Molly Smith and Trent and Thad Luckinbill , had this to say: “You have such a great character with Benicio, who was as dark as he was and still so loved. That character resonates so well with audiences. People want to know what happened to him, so it’s a perfect foray for us to explore“.
SPIT-TAKE OF THE WEEK
You know, I could say that ALL those crazy reports about “Rogue One” would very well suffice as the spit-take. But hell – I’ll put this here instead: here’s a piece of concept art and plot details on “Cars 3“. Because as the first two “Cars“-movies were already the worst stuff that Pixar ever put out, OF COURSE there will be a third one.
“Championship racer Lightning McQueen, voiced by Owen Wilson, will need help to compete in the increasingly high-tech racing world of the upcoming Cars 3.
That’s where the new trainer comes in — the sleek, yellow Cruz Ramirez is a young Hispanic female race car who instructs Lightning McQueen, as this exclusive concept art depicts during a beach run.
“Cruz Ramirez is trying to figure out how this old dog can learn some new tricks,” says Cars 3 director Brian Fee.”
That is all.
