"Rogue One"-reporting madness, Pennywise the Clown cast for "IT", "Captain Marvel" lead & director-shortlists, Day-Lewis back with P.T. Anderson?, unseen storyboards of Raimi's Spidey... Spinning Headlines – Week 22: Rogue One, IT, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Doc Savage, Daniel Craig, Sicario 2, Cars 3…

Hi there. Time for that end-of-the-week News extravaganza. As always, check out the “News”-section for other news updates. This week we learned that the Marvel “Planet Hulk”-storyline may be incorporated at least partially to “Thor: Ragnarok”, and possibly even beyond. And The Imitation Game”-director Morten Tyldum is attached to a time-traveling serial killer-story “The Shining Girls”.

“DISNEY EXECS HATE ‘ROGUE ONE’ – MASSIVE RESHOOTS COMING”, “EXECS DO NOT HATE THE FILM – RESHOOTS ONLY TO ADJUST THE FILMS TONE”, “CHRISTOPHER MCQUARRIE TO OVERSEE ‘ROGUE ONE’-RESHOOTS”, “MCQUARRIE NOT OVERTAKING THE ‘ROGUE ONE’-RESHOOTS”, “RESHOOTS TO ADD YOUNG HAN SOLO-ACTOR INTO THE MOVIE”, “THEY WILL RESHOOT 40% OF THE MOVIE” and so on and so forth. Those are just few of the hundreds of different headlines we’ve seen on the web since the story broke out that “Rogue One: a Star Wars Story” will have some reshoots. And I’m not gonna link a single one of those to this article. You wanna know why? Because I sense it’s 99% fucking clickbait-bullshit.

Rumor Control – here are the facts: “Rogue One” will have some reshoots. And those were scheduled even before a single scene was shot.

And that’s it.

Name one big-budget studio movie that hasn’t – in the recent years. And yet, everybody loses their minds and all these “unnamed sources” suddenly appear and start to act like doomsday prophets. I’ve fucking had it.

Moving on…

As the tweet from Bryan Fuller states, he is overjoyed to work with his “Hannibal” star Gillian Anderson again on his Starz TV adaptaion of Neil Gaiman‘s “American Gods“…

After some rumors of Will Poulter being the frontrunner to play the evil clown-like nemesis in the New Line Cinema-adaptation of the Stephen King-novel a while back, the OFFICIAL casting news finally hit. Pennywise will be played by “Hemlock Grove“-actor Bill Skarsgard of the Swedish Skarsgard-dynasty consisting of father Stellan, and sons Alexander, Gustaf and Valter who are also actors (there are also two sisters and a couple of half-brothers, so we won’t be running out of Skarsgards any time soon).

Other actors set to appear in the Andy Muschietti-directed film are Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs and Jeremy Ray Taylor. They are definitely going with a cast of unknowns here. Might actually be a good thing-

Well this is surely interesting. It seems that after another long break from acting since he starred – and bagged another Oscar for it – in Steven Spielberg‘s “Lincoln“, Daniel Day-Lewis might be ready to take on another film again. And it would be with his “There Will Be Blood” director Paul Thomas Anderson. The details are scarce at best – which is not unusual for Anderson’s productions – but the rumor is that the film will be set in 1950s New York and revolve around the fashion industry. And I think that’s plenty of information already. As we all know, the outlines for Anderson’s films usually turn out to  become something else entirely. Just like “TWBB” was about “oil”. And “The Master” was “about Scientology”.

See? The truth is the film could be about anything. But Day-Lewis & Anderson together again? Hell – I’m sold.

Marvel Studios is starting to gear up the “Captain Marvel“-movie now, and this week saw the first real news about who they could possibly be going for as both the star and director. There IS a script, which was written by Nicole Perlman(“Guardians of the Galaxy”) and Meg LeFauve(“Inside Out”). Now – I know a lot of people who were looking for Emily Blunt to be cast as Carole Danvers aka. “Captain  Marvel” – an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident, resulting with the super powers of strength, energy projection and flight – but it seems that the studio has now set their sights on Brie Larson, whose career got a major boost from winning the Oscar this year for “The Room”.

And the two directors in the current shortlist of candidates include  Jennifer Kent(“The Babadook”) and Niki Caro(“Whale Rider”). So, as Marvel stated a while back, they are definitely going with an all-female creative team for this. And all the power to them. Let’s just hope that whoever they pick will be able to deal with the creative “think-tank” of the studio properly and not join the list of former casualties that has names like Edgar Wright and Patty Jenkins in it.

This was a story that is sort of cool and bittersweet at the same time. As we all recall, before Sony decided to reboot the “Spider-Man”-franchise for the first time, Sam Raimi had been developing a fourth movie for quite some time. And one rumor that was persistent was that Bruce Campbell might be cast as the villain Mysterio. See that would have been a nice wrap-up of his weird appearances in all the three previous movies as completely different characters – which Peter for some reason doesn’t really notice.

Well, this week storyboard artist Jeffrey Henderson published some of his storyboards he made for the movie, and there it is:

Also included were some action shots of the Vulture(who was planned to be portrayed by John Malkovich) – which may be relevant now as the buzz is Vulture will be featured in the nex reboot, “Spider-Man: Homecoming”:

See a lot more of the boards here.

The Rock keeps rolling. As he already has about a million projects in the works from “Baywatch” to “Fast 8” to “Rampage” to “Jumanji”-reboot to a possible “San Andreas”-sequel and a “Big Trouble in Little China”-remake and the Robert Ludlum Cinematic Universe, it was announced that he will ALSO be portraying Doc Savage in the long-in-development Shane Black-project. Here’s the announcement for that:

I guess he doesn’t sleep.

A short bio on Doc Savage for those who don’t know what the hell the character is about: “Doc Savage’s real name is Clark Savage, Jr. He was a physician, scientist, adventurer, inventor, explorer, researcher, and, as revealed in The Polar Treasure, a musician. A team of scientists assembled by his father deliberately trained his mind and body to near-superhuman abilities almost from birth, giving him great strength and endurance, a photographic memory, a mastery of the martial arts, and vast knowledge of the sciences. Doc is also a master of disguise and an excellent imitator of voices.

Daniel Craig just filled his schedule pretty well so that pretty much puts the lid on those James Bond-plans once and for all. The Showtime-series based on Jonathan Franzen novel “Purity”, which Craig is set to star in, just got a two-season, 20-episode order with filming set to get underway in 2017. Filmmaker Todd Field will co-write and executive produce as well as direct the entire series. The novels official synopsis goes like this:

PURITY is a morally complex story of youthful idealism, extreme loyalty and cold-blooded murder. Jonathan Franzen’s intricately plotted novel is populated by characters both hungry for the truth and desperate to hide it. From STASI offspring to Oakland anarchists, Franzen tracks his characters’ landscapes as varied as East Berlin, the Bolivian jungle, East Harlem walk-ups, and the California Redwoods. PURITY is at once supremely ambitious in scope and intensely intimate in its treatment of character – a decades-spanning tragicomedy that builds to a contemporary climax.

Italian filmmaker Stefano Sollima(“Gomorrah”) will direct the sequel to last year’s “Sicario” –  now titled “Soldado“. The film is said to focus on the character played by Benicio Del Toro in the first film. Josh Brolin is also expected to return – but Emily Blunt will not, which is a major bummer. The producers of the film, Molly Smith and Trent and Thad Luckinbill , had this to say: “You have such a great character with Benicio, who was as dark as he was and still so loved. That character resonates so well with audiences. People want to know what happened to him, so it’s a perfect foray for us to explore“.

You know, I could say that ALL those crazy reports about “Rogue One” would very well suffice as the spit-take. But hell – I’ll put this here instead: here’s a piece of concept art and plot details on “Cars 3“. Because as the first two “Cars“-movies were already the worst stuff that Pixar ever put out, OF COURSE there will be a third one.

Championship racer Lightning McQueen, voiced by Owen Wilson, will need help to compete in the increasingly high-tech racing world of the upcoming Cars 3.

That’s where the new trainer comes in — the sleek, yellow Cruz Ramirez is a young Hispanic female race car who instructs Lightning McQueen, as this exclusive concept art depicts during a beach run.

“Cruz Ramirez is trying to figure out how this old dog can learn some new tricks,” says Cars 3 director Brian Fee.

That is all.

  • I_am_better

UPDATE: added a short bit about Gillian Anderson joining “American Gods”

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

Why does Mysterio have man-tits and a potbelly? Was that Raimi’s dig at Campbell?

  • I_am_better

Maybe. He was on a bit of the heavy side at the time

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

Nevertheless, I would rather have seen Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 than the pointless “Amazing” ones.

  • I_am_better

The first Amazing I sorta enjoyed, but that second one…hooooooly shhhhiiiiiiiite

  • L.H.Puttgrass

Oh, no! Rogue One is in trouble!
I guess they were tired of raging at the Ghostbusters movie.

    Gillian Anderson on American Gods?
Where will she find the time for that while making Jane Bond?

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

I’m not sure about that guy who’s been cast as Pennywise. In fact, I’m not sure of this adaptation, without Fukunaga, period. It could be fantastic or terrible, I suppose. Haven’t really heard much about their plans for it, other than it’s two movies: one with kids, and one with adults.

I do hope it isn’t being made with a really cheap budget, as a disposable horror movie knocked out quickly for the Halloween (the holiday, not the series) crowd that enjoys Blumhouse films. When was the last time we got an ‘A’ film in the horror genre?

  • American Gods shaping up nicely. Don’t care about the rest.

  • I thought Rogue One was gonna be a more serious-ish , Star Wars “WAR” movie. I guess Disney got cold feet. Frozen feet even.

  • also RIP Ali

  • And that Glee star who is in court for child porn…..

  • And Amber Heard does not like the choke method.

    Neither does Rose McGowen

  • Anthony Hopkins joins Bayformers 5…..

  • seems they were just gonna use Mysterio as a comedy relief bullshit cameo. No powers, no threat . All the cops in those pictures just seem to be laughing at him.

“Oh, looks like we caught Mysterio again” ( cue laugh track )

    Glad it never happened.

  • Feige said there would be casting announcements during the summer.

Personally I’m down for Brie to be Captain Marvel.

Imagine her getting a straight punch to the face by the Hulk, and just be like ” Is that all you got green man ”

  • Dee-abolik

Is somebody still yearning for Raimi’s Spiderman movies?
Captain Marvel: No opinion, don’t care.
Craig leaves 007 behind: I think he is better in other roles. I hope they reconsider the whole approach and get new writers.
Sicario sequel: odd choice for a sequel.
    PTA and Mc Milkshake: Whatever.

  • Dee-abolik

Malkovich has already been in TF3. Hopkins isn’t exactly known for declining a solid paycheck either.

  • Dee-abolik

I feel the same way. Fukunaga’s version was sooo promising, the cancellation a total letdown. The horror genre has been shunned by good directors for the last years.

  • Stalk👁

Brie as Captain Marvel, Fuck that Shit! Too short and not even heroic looking. At least Gal Gadot manage to pull off Wonder Woman but Larson? Hell, naw!!

“Rock Savage”? Pfffftttt! He’s the Samoan Samuel L. Jackson, that fucker is in everything nowadays!

I didn’t know that Sicario was that good to warrant a sequel. it’s an OK film but not the end all to be all.

  • Stalk👁

“Is somebody still yearning for Raimi’s Spiderman movies?”
After watching the abominations that were ASM 1&2, well……

  • Stalk👁
  • Stalk👁

  • Yes indeed. Or he just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work with explosions ??

  • Dee-abolik

Well, you know my stance on ASM1….

  • I_am_better
  • Dee-abolik
  • oh yes…. I forgot he stopped caring long ago.

  • CoolHandJuke

Fuck movies. I’m going back to my wax cylinders…

  • Zed

The last time I saw people so excited over a Star Wars prequel, it did not go well.

  • Zed

Harry has chosen clay tablets and here’s why

  • Zed

The announcement of Cars 3 is a bit like reading the headline “Scientists Discover Eight New Types of Cancer.”

  • Tarmac492.1

    Sicario 2? lol!!!

  • Tarmac492.1

lol!! love the use of down syndrome would still fuck her. tarmac digs the retarded look.

  • Tarmac492.1

never forgive joe johnston for that. garbage

  • Tarmac492.1

no Casablanca in space for me 🙁

  • Tarmac492.1

Wan might be the only good horror director out there. Ti West is slipping, Roth a fucking fraud. i liked flanagans Absentia but oculus was garbage. romero and carpenter need to die to save their careers, spielberg doesnt have the sac, whatever happened to neil marshall? i also hated kill list!!

  • I_am_better

    not a fan?

  • Tarmac492.1

fucking LOVED the first half. second half with the revenge was meh to me. although with BTD at the dinner table was awesome.

  • Tarmac492.1

  • Tarmac492.1

    neither is tarmac

  • Tarmac492.1

couldnt get through ten minutes of Andrew Garfield. Raimi has artistry..

  • Dee-abolik

Fuck, saw Oculus the first time a few days ago and could not believe what a piece of overhyped crap that is!! You forgot Adam Wingard, another “hope” for the genre that turned out as a fraud. What the hell is going on?

  • Dee-abolik

oh yeah what a hastily cobbled together piece of crap

  • Zed

Also, I love how they haven’t cast the role yet, but are already hyping the new character as a young Hispanic female. Keep checking those boxes, Pixar!

  • Bop

*Deep sigh* Another remake. This time it’s IT. Well, good luck topping Tim Curry’s performance as Pennywise.

  • Bop

Sicario was really meh. After all the hype I expected to see a good movie. That was not the case.

Captain Marvel should only be one of the following 2:

    Katheryn Winnick
    Viva Bianca

  • Tarmac492.1

ahhh yes. Wingard does suck. You’re Next is not the next coming of NOTLD or anything like that.,

  • Tarmac492.1

    adds a special sock factor

  • CoolHandJuke

because he thought someone said cake tablets?

  • Stalk👁

    Definately right about Winnick.

  • Stalk👁

Garfield has that look as if he smelled Shit. As in ASM2.

  • Stalk👁

  • KilliK

    just watched Warcraft.

flawed mainly because of the forced cut, but the movie works. it’s good, better than XM:A,BVS. if you are fans of the games or the fantasy genre, go watch it. Dont expect to be a LOTR masterpiece, it never attempts to be that but if you want 2h of some good entertainment, give it a chance.

and ASI, Duncan Jones did it, he fucking did it.

  • Bop

She is really awesome. Girl power all the way, but hardly getting the chance to strut her stuff in a movie.

  • Toruk_Makto

    Good to hear!

  • KilliK

yeah, give it a chance, mate. it deserves it. dont expect a groundbreaking masterpiece, it’s flawed, but it is lots of fun and has heart. when the audience claps 3 times during the movie, the director did something good, critics be damned.

  • Toruk_Makto

I’ll be checking it out this weekend.

  • Toruk_Makto

    Saw it. Really liked it.
I can’t judge it as an adaptation, I’m not qualified.

But as a sword and sorcery movie I give it a B+.

  • KilliK

glad you liked it, mate. 🙂
