Spinning Headlines – April 1st Edition: Suicide Squad, Batman, Avatar, The New Mutants, Terry Gilliam, Sofia Coppola, Max Landis, Mystery Box…

Happy April 1st, everyone! It’s Friday and time to look back at what the hell has been going on in the movie industry. As always, check out the Supernaughts “news”-section for daily updates; this week gave us info that Akiva Goldsman is set to adapt “Doctor Sleep”, Stephen King’s sequel-novel to “The Shining” and Robin Wright has joined the “Blade Runner”-sequel.

What else?

ABOUT THAT “SUICIDE SQUAD”…

Now, I’ve yet to see any actual confirmation by the studio or the filmmakers about this, so as of yet its just a bunch of websites reacting to a rumor of an innuendo, but the rumor is that “Suicide Squad” will have a ton of reshoots done – quoted as being worth “tens of millions of dollars“. Why? Well – remember that second trailer that so effectively used “Bohemian Rhapsody” and had a whole load of gags in it? Apparently those were ALL the jokes in the actual movie. And as the fans really responded to those, Warner/DC now wants to retool the whole movie and add “levity” to it. Now IF this turns out to be true, then one has to set all the blame to the marketing department at WB for making the movie appear as something it wasn’t. I mean, all you have to do is to see director/writer David Ayer‘s previous films to see that “levity” is not exactly a word that can be associated to him…

But – like I said: NO confirmation from the studio has been given to these rumors yet. The thing was posted yesterday so it could be an April Fools-joke published too early for all we know.

In other news, Jared Leto gave out some comments about his characterization of the Joker. In an interview with EW, he said the following: “The work that’s been done on this character by so many people before me has been so impactful, so incredible, so much fun, so profound, so risky, that it’s a very special thing to be asked to take on that responsibility.” And speaking of his approach of the character: “You just knew you had to do something different. You had to make it your own. That happens all the time. Whether you’re a composer working on a piece of music that was written a century ago, or you’re an actor on stage, reinterpreting a play, it’s very common these days. Directors take on great works of cinema, actors reinterpret roles, that’s been going on for a great deal of time. From Scarface to Hamlet. In some ways it’s really interesting to reinterpret, redefine.”

SOME MORE DC NEWS

Batman-in-Colour

So now that “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice” is out and has split the fan community in half like Donald Trump & Hillary Clinton, the only thing that almost everyone seem to agree on is that Ben Affleck made a good Batman. So it’s no surprise that the buzz of a solo “Batman” film is high. This was said by William Morris Endeavor co-CEO Patrick Whitesell this week, when asked how many DC films his client Affleck has signed on at this point: “He’s contracted to do at least Justice League One and Two, so at least three times wearing the cape,” he says, adding, “there’s a script that he’s written that is a really cool [Batman] idea, so that’s out there as an option.

PETER JACKSON TO CO-DIRECT “AVATAR”-SEQUELS WITH JAMES CAMERON

Peter+Jackson+James+Cameron+Comic+Con+2009+8wqsgODbyfHl

It’s been a long development process for the sequels to 2009’s “Avatar“. And during that process, one sequel has slowly progressed to two, then three. And ALL of the sequels are set to be shot simultaneously in New Zealand with filming set to start at some point this year. That’s one helluva job for one man to keep up with. And so, James Cameron has now sought the help of someone who has not only accomplished that feat once, but TWICE. It was reported today that Cameron has hired Peter Jackson as his co-director for the sequels. Cameron stated: “This project has evolved into a gargantuan task, and I’m not above asking for help from someone I trust and consider a friend. Peter is the filmmaker who is basically responsible for this infrastructure here in New Zealand that we’re using – Wingnut Films Studios, WETA Workshop, Weta Digital – he knows these people better than I ever will and he has done this twice already, so…it was a no-brainer really.” Jackson commented on the news: “I’ve been enjoying a bit of a hiatus after the ‘Hobbit’ shoot – sort of recharging myself – and when Jim came to see me about this, I just couldn’t say ‘no’ to a friend. I’m very excited to be part of this universe. It’s a whole new kind of fantasy.

X-MEN SPINOFF IN WORKS

new-mutants-700-700x305

As the original actors in 20th Century Fox’s “X-Men” are slowly getting either too old, too in-demand or just uninterested in continuing to dress up in tight leather, the studio has been forming a back-up plan; a spin-off. It’s a little something called “The New Mutants” (based on a Marvel comic line first published in 1982)and according to Fox’s overseer of all things comic-book, Simon Kinberg, it’s already in scripting stage: “Josh Boone and his writing partner are working on the script. They’re doing a really nice job of it, and it’s a really cool one, because in many ways, like Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men movies, New Mutants… It’s maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has its own unique, original voice to it.” Here’s the REAL capper though – it’s…you know, for kids: “That’s the fun for me, working in the X-Men universe, creating these sort of standalone movies that have a different vibe to them. And New Mutants has more of a YA [Young Adult] vibe to it.

YA, eh…? Well, it’s what every other studio is doing now so good luck with that.

Some casting rumors are already out, regarding the second youngest team member, Wolfsbane, and Colossus’ younger sister, Magik. Stepping into those mutant movie roles are apparently Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”) and Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Witch”) respectively. Also expected to join the team is the studio’s younger version of Storm, Alexandra Shipp, who will soon appear in “X-Men Apocalypse“.

“GAMBIT” CAN’T CATCH A BREAK

gambit-x-men-movie-writer

Another cog in the wheel of Fox’s OTHER “X-Men” spinoff; the Channing Tatum-starring project has already had a number of setbacks and delays – including the departure of the original director Rupert Wyatt – and now there’s MORE: while there are more rewrites on the movie, the current director Doug Liman has signed on to an Amazon Studios project called “The Wall” and will film that before making “Gambit”. “The Wall“, written by Dwain Worrell, is said to be a psychological thriller about a sniper and his spotter who are pinned down behind cover by a legendary sniper.

TERRY GILLIAM’S “QUIXOTE” GETS FINANCED…AGAIN

Terry-Gilliam-1024_211033k

Third time’s the charm? Or is this fourth? Terry Gilliam‘s nearly 20 years in-the-making “Don Quixote“-movie is once again in the pipeline. It was reported this week, that Paulo Branco, under his Paris-based Alfama Films label is set to produce the film along with Spain’s Tornasol Films and Portugal’s Leopardo Filmes. The budget is set at $18.25 million, with principal photography starting in September in Spain and Portugal. You got to hand it to Gilliam – he’s adamant at making this movie, despite numerous false starts and disasters. Maybe this time… Maybe.

“THE BEGUILED” TO BE REMADE BY SOFIA COPPOLA

298575

In probably the most surprising news this week, it was announced that not only will Sofia Coppola write, direct and produce a remake of the 1971 Don Siegel-directed, Clint Eastwood-starring movie “The Beguiled“, but that she already has a lot of the cast mapped out. Namely Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Elle Fanning. The story, based on the Southern Gothic novel by Thomas P. Cullian, is set during the Civil War. A young girl from an all-female Confederate boarding school comes across an injured Union soldier. The school takes him in to help him recover, but he cons his way into their hearts and the women start to fight with him and each other for his attention. Kidman is set to play the headmistress of the school, Mrs.Farnsworth. Dunst is to play a teacher and Fanning one of the girls.

I really have mixed feelings about this. The Siegel movie is in my mind perfect. It’s actually borderline gothic horror film. And one of the best movies Eastwood has made – even Eastwood himself thinks so. Unless they can come up with a really fresh approach to this, I just don’t know. I guess a lot depends on who they will cast as the male lead. The source article says they’re looking for a “Chris Pratt-type”, which already sounds like the wrong approach.

THE OBLIGTORY “BAYWATCH” POST

Dwayne Johnson posted the official cast-lineup on his Instagram.

ANOTHER MAX LANDIS SPEC SCRIPT TO BE FILMED

VIHLuowt3C65KM_1_hd

I’d say Max Landis is in a roll. Last year’s “American Ultra” was damn good fun – just too bad that nobody really saw that one. After last week’s news that his spec script “Bright” was bought by Netflix for a hefty $90 million with $3 million going for Landis alone, this week we got news of ANOTHER spec script from Landis being made. It’s called “Deeper” and it’s starring Bradley Cooper. The short story synopsis is, that: “‘Deeper’ is a drama about a disgraced astronaut who embarks on a mission to reach the bottom of a newly-discovered oceanic trench, which some speculate may be the lowest point on Earth. Facing great danger, he quickly finds himself in a physical and psychological fight against mysterious forces.” Director Kornel Mundruczo (“White God”) is attached to direct, with Landis and David Goyer producing.

And of course everyone who went to see “Batman V. Superman” saw Jesse Eisenberg do an impression of Landis in his characterization of Lex Luthor, so Landis really is EVERYWHERE now…

GOD PARTICLE EMERGES FROM THE MYSTERY BOX

1445526320122

10 Cloverfield Lane” got some exceptionally good reviews and did well at the box office, and now another science fiction-film is revealed to be in the works under JJ Abrams Bad Robot-banner. “Selma” actor David Oyelowo and “Beyond the Lights” star Gugu Mbatha-Raw are signed to star in God Particle, which is said to take place in the near future and revolve around “a team of astronauts on a mission who make a terrifying discovery that challenges all they know about the fabric of reality, as they desperately fight for survival.Julius Onah is directing the film with Abrams and Bryan Burk producing. The film has already a set February 27, 2017 release date and filming is set to begin soon.

SPIT-TAKE OF THE WEEK

spit_pony

In the least surprising news, Disney keeps feeding more material into that live-action adaptation machine. This time it’s reported that they are doing a live-action movie of Rose Red. No, not the Stephen King miniseries “Rose Red” – but a “Snow White“-spinoff, focusing on Snow White’s sister Rose Red, who appeared in Grimms’ fairy tales in an adventure that had no relation to the more well-known “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, that inspired the original Disney animated film. It is said that the story is “a revisionist take that transposes Rose Red into the Snow White tale, making her a key player in the later part of the classic story.

rose-red-and-snow-white-

Huh. I guess this is a response to Universal’s “Snow White“-movie franchise which has it’s first spinoff coming out soon. It’s the “Snow White”-wars. Winter is coming…

That is all.

The Suicide Squad thing ‘d better be a joke. It is already bad they screwed up Deadshot by casting Smith, but more humor? FTS.

Had not heard about Peter Jackson. Actually gives me some interest in the Avatar sequels. Although I wonder what he would actually do as a “co-director?”

First thing I’ve heard that’s given me any enthusiasm for those movies.

New Mutants might be the Fan4stink of 201+.
FOX trying to pimp out their Mutie Movies since their other properties aside from Deadpool and DOFP have tanked as of recent. Yes, Batman was the single BEST thing to come outta BvS. He practically saved the film from being a total clusterfuck.
I hope to see a Batffleck film in my time. Ben would know how to appropriately handle it.

  • Vampire Hunter D(ee)

I can’t wait to see another Abrams production that takes a stab at “science”…

Am I the only one who thinks PJ is overrated?

  • Vampire Hunter D(ee)

Didja finish ROTR yet? and if so, what’s your opinion overall?
I noticed that Capcom has released the dreadful RE6 for the next gen systems. Wut?!? I think I’ll play the backwards compatible Dead Space on my Xbox One instead. That’s a REAL survival horror game!

  • Col. Tigh-Fighter

It was magnificnet! And I am sad it has ended 🙁

Uncharted 4 is out soon, but the new The Walking Dead game with Michone came out today, so that’s this evening sorted. RE6 sucked donkey balls! Some nice stuff in the first segment, but the other two segments were stupid.

Just waiting for RE2 HD. That badboy cannot come soon enough!

  • franks_television

Seems like he’s not rated very highly generally these days.

  • Col. Tigh-Fighter

He gets a lifetime pass for everything upto and including LOTR. He’s still got another great film in him if he just gets reigned in a bit. It;s George Lucas syndrome.

  • Stalkeye

I haven’t seen Braindead but I heard its all the rage.

  • franks_television

I think Brain Dead and Fellowship of the Ring are the only films of his that get consistent respect.

Big Fan of Christopher Lee. and Ian McKellan, is a great thespian but I'm not feeling this.

  • Col. Tigh-Fighter

It’s a very good, very low budget film.

  • Stalkeye

You, me and CTM can’t wait for RE2 HD. I’m still playing the 1st REmake on my XBone and I just might get Uncharted 4.
RE6 was too derivative and not to mention, how the orchestra was too Hollywood as well as the set pieces. I think there were 4 chapters; Chris, Leon, Wesker Jr and Ada and they all under-performed. Leon’s almost went back to its RE4 roots but it got boring and ridiculous, especially when it came to the main villain-Simmons.
I give Revelations 2 props for at least trying to undo the damage that RE6 has done to the franchise.

  • KilliK

and Meet the Feebles and Bad Taste.

Perhaps, mayhaps but that scene from GF3 reienforces my belief that she should stay away from acting as far as possible.
Funny, how she resembles that actress from Abel Ferra’s Ms.45.

We know what buttons to push!

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

Clever April Fool. I was horrified for a second there. PJ has become a really bad director of late.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

King Kong was half good, half bad. The Hobbit movies were just bad, period. I don’t want that guy anywhere near Jim’s masterpieces.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

You think that’s bad? Well, I just heard this shocking news: Jim was taking an unscheduled dip in the Marianas Trench today and his sub imploded. JJ Abrams has agreed to take over the franchise in Jim’s honor.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

What idiot decided against casting Kate Upton in the Pamela Anderson role? Instead, they chose a girl with a B cup? Fools!

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

Creepy would disagree. His rant about her was legendary. Had a lot of truth to it, too.

  • Bop

The same idiot who didn’t cast Daddario in the Pamela Anderson role.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

I thought Daddario was playing the brunette one from the show? I think, for a good dynamic, you need both a blonde and a brunette – both with large breasts, of course.

  • Bop

They should have hired you as the consultant. You know your stuff.

  • Toruk_Makto

I’d bend her over the living room couch. that way we can both watch tv.

  • Toruk_Makto

  • Toruk_Makto

I’m afraid the time has come to create a real Mutant Liberation Front.
    The madness must stop.

if i shoved a bunch of mini m&ms into Margot Robbie’s butthole, do you think her sphincter could shoot them into my mouth?

  • Zed

And here I was assuming that the character was going to be killed off due to Lawrence’s ever increasing price tag, just like Cap and/or Iron Man. Wolverine and Friends has become Mystique and Friends. Not an improvement.

  • Zed

What? You don’t want a five hour Avatar movie, the first half of which would just be people goofing around on a space ship? Imagine what nonsense Blue Legolas could do in that low gravity…

  • Zed

They would melt. Skittles are much better suited for such purposes. Er, so I’m told.

  • Zed

Wait… King Kong had a story?

  • KilliK
  • Vampire Hunter D(ee)

For me PJ is unwatchable since The Two Towers. Fellowship was his last watchable movie.

  • CoolHandJuke

the guy at the store done told me wrong…

  • Vampire Hunter D(ee)

Something about a privileged perspective? It does apply to a certain degree, but that’s not all that is to her work. I think there are more egregious examples for that too. Cannot stand “Lost in translation” though.

  • I_am_better

    Mine was “Apocalypse Now”

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

I can watch everything up to The Lovely Bones. That movie was horrible. Then the Hobbits came out and were so badly conceived and boring that they actually conspired to sour me, indirectly, on Tolkien and his Middle Earth mythology as a whole. I never want to see another hobbit or elf in my life. That’s something which I cannot forgive PJ for.

  • Vampire Hunter D(ee)

I was already disappointed with the Two Towers, such a sloppy movie. What the hell is it with Jackson and elves, by the way? He always stylized himself as a soulmate of the Hobbits, but that was window dressing, because he reaaallly loves his goddamn superhuman Elves. It’s as if he was suffering from feelings of inadequacy.

  • Turd Has Escaped The Gravy

The hobbits are who Jackson really is – short, tubby and unkempt. The elves are who he aspires to be – tall, athletic and flawlessly Aryan. He has elf envy.

  • Vampire Hunter D(ee)

That’s just sad. The whole “proud to be a geek” credo might be a myth. That is something he shares with JJ: still looking up to the jocks from High School. It’s also evidenced with the “sexy dwarfs” from The Hobbit.

  • KilliK
