Spinning Headlines – April 1st Edition: Suicide Squad, Batman, Avatar, The New Mutants, Terry Gilliam, Sofia Coppola, Max Landis, Mystery Box…
Happy April 1st, everyone! It’s Friday and time to look back at what the hell has been going on in the movie industry. As always, check out the Supernaughts “news”-section for daily updates; this week gave us info that Akiva Goldsman is set to adapt “Doctor Sleep”, Stephen King’s sequel-novel to “The Shining” and Robin Wright has joined the “Blade Runner”-sequel.
ABOUT THAT “SUICIDE SQUAD”…
Now, I’ve yet to see any actual confirmation by the studio or the filmmakers about this, so as of yet its just a bunch of websites reacting to a rumor of an innuendo, but the rumor is that “Suicide Squad” will have a ton of reshoots done – quoted as being worth “tens of millions of dollars“. Why? Well – remember that second trailer that so effectively used “Bohemian Rhapsody” and had a whole load of gags in it? Apparently those were ALL the jokes in the actual movie. And as the fans really responded to those, Warner/DC now wants to retool the whole movie and add “levity” to it. Now IF this turns out to be true, then one has to set all the blame to the marketing department at WB for making the movie appear as something it wasn’t. I mean, all you have to do is to see director/writer David Ayer‘s previous films to see that “levity” is not exactly a word that can be associated to him…
But – like I said: NO confirmation from the studio has been given to these rumors yet. The thing was posted yesterday so it could be an April Fools-joke published too early for all we know.
In other news, Jared Leto gave out some comments about his characterization of the Joker. In an interview with EW, he said the following: “The work that’s been done on this character by so many people before me has been so impactful, so incredible, so much fun, so profound, so risky, that it’s a very special thing to be asked to take on that responsibility.” And speaking of his approach of the character: “You just knew you had to do something different. You had to make it your own. That happens all the time. Whether you’re a composer working on a piece of music that was written a century ago, or you’re an actor on stage, reinterpreting a play, it’s very common these days. Directors take on great works of cinema, actors reinterpret roles, that’s been going on for a great deal of time. From Scarface to Hamlet. In some ways it’s really interesting to reinterpret, redefine.”
SOME MORE DC NEWS
So now that “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice” is out and has split the fan community in half like Donald Trump & Hillary Clinton, the only thing that almost everyone seem to agree on is that Ben Affleck made a good Batman. So it’s no surprise that the buzz of a solo “Batman” film is high. This was said by William Morris Endeavor co-CEO Patrick Whitesell this week, when asked how many DC films his client Affleck has signed on at this point: “He’s contracted to do at least Justice League One and Two, so at least three times wearing the cape,” he says, adding, “there’s a script that he’s written that is a really cool [Batman] idea, so that’s out there as an option.”
PETER JACKSON TO CO-DIRECT “AVATAR”-SEQUELS WITH JAMES CAMERON
It’s been a long development process for the sequels to 2009’s “Avatar“. And during that process, one sequel has slowly progressed to two, then three. And ALL of the sequels are set to be shot simultaneously in New Zealand with filming set to start at some point this year. That’s one helluva job for one man to keep up with. And so, James Cameron has now sought the help of someone who has not only accomplished that feat once, but TWICE. It was reported today that Cameron has hired Peter Jackson as his co-director for the sequels. Cameron stated: “This project has evolved into a gargantuan task, and I’m not above asking for help from someone I trust and consider a friend. Peter is the filmmaker who is basically responsible for this infrastructure here in New Zealand that we’re using – Wingnut Films Studios, WETA Workshop, Weta Digital – he knows these people better than I ever will and he has done this twice already, so…it was a no-brainer really.” Jackson commented on the news: “I’ve been enjoying a bit of a hiatus after the ‘Hobbit’ shoot – sort of recharging myself – and when Jim came to see me about this, I just couldn’t say ‘no’ to a friend. I’m very excited to be part of this universe. It’s a whole new kind of fantasy.”
X-MEN SPINOFF IN WORKS
As the original actors in 20th Century Fox’s “X-Men” are slowly getting either too old, too in-demand or just uninterested in continuing to dress up in tight leather, the studio has been forming a back-up plan; a spin-off. It’s a little something called “The New Mutants” (based on a Marvel comic line first published in 1982)and according to Fox’s overseer of all things comic-book, Simon Kinberg, it’s already in scripting stage: “Josh Boone and his writing partner are working on the script. They’re doing a really nice job of it, and it’s a really cool one, because in many ways, like Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men movies, New Mutants… It’s maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has its own unique, original voice to it.” Here’s the REAL capper though – it’s…you know, for kids: “That’s the fun for me, working in the X-Men universe, creating these sort of standalone movies that have a different vibe to them. And New Mutants has more of a YA [Young Adult] vibe to it.”
YA, eh…? Well, it’s what every other studio is doing now so good luck with that.
Some casting rumors are already out, regarding the second youngest team member, Wolfsbane, and Colossus’ younger sister, Magik. Stepping into those mutant movie roles are apparently Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”) and Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Witch”) respectively. Also expected to join the team is the studio’s younger version of Storm, Alexandra Shipp, who will soon appear in “X-Men Apocalypse“.
“GAMBIT” CAN’T CATCH A BREAK
Another cog in the wheel of Fox’s OTHER “X-Men” spinoff; the Channing Tatum-starring project has already had a number of setbacks and delays – including the departure of the original director Rupert Wyatt – and now there’s MORE: while there are more rewrites on the movie, the current director Doug Liman has signed on to an Amazon Studios project called “The Wall” and will film that before making “Gambit”. “The Wall“, written by Dwain Worrell, is said to be a psychological thriller about a sniper and his spotter who are pinned down behind cover by a legendary sniper.
TERRY GILLIAM’S “QUIXOTE” GETS FINANCED…AGAIN
Third time’s the charm? Or is this fourth? Terry Gilliam‘s nearly 20 years in-the-making “Don Quixote“-movie is once again in the pipeline. It was reported this week, that Paulo Branco, under his Paris-based Alfama Films label is set to produce the film along with Spain’s Tornasol Films and Portugal’s Leopardo Filmes. The budget is set at $18.25 million, with principal photography starting in September in Spain and Portugal. You got to hand it to Gilliam – he’s adamant at making this movie, despite numerous false starts and disasters. Maybe this time… Maybe.
“THE BEGUILED” TO BE REMADE BY SOFIA COPPOLA
In probably the most surprising news this week, it was announced that not only will Sofia Coppola write, direct and produce a remake of the 1971 Don Siegel-directed, Clint Eastwood-starring movie “The Beguiled“, but that she already has a lot of the cast mapped out. Namely Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Elle Fanning. The story, based on the Southern Gothic novel by Thomas P. Cullian, is set during the Civil War. A young girl from an all-female Confederate boarding school comes across an injured Union soldier. The school takes him in to help him recover, but he cons his way into their hearts and the women start to fight with him and each other for his attention. Kidman is set to play the headmistress of the school, Mrs.Farnsworth. Dunst is to play a teacher and Fanning one of the girls.
I really have mixed feelings about this. The Siegel movie is in my mind perfect. It’s actually borderline gothic horror film. And one of the best movies Eastwood has made – even Eastwood himself thinks so. Unless they can come up with a really fresh approach to this, I just don’t know. I guess a lot depends on who they will cast as the male lead. The source article says they’re looking for a “Chris Pratt-type”, which already sounds like the wrong approach.

ANOTHER MAX LANDIS SPEC SCRIPT TO BE FILMED
I’d say Max Landis is in a roll. Last year’s “American Ultra” was damn good fun – just too bad that nobody really saw that one. After last week’s news that his spec script “Bright” was bought by Netflix for a hefty $90 million with $3 million going for Landis alone, this week we got news of ANOTHER spec script from Landis being made. It’s called “Deeper” and it’s starring Bradley Cooper. The short story synopsis is, that: “‘Deeper’ is a drama about a disgraced astronaut who embarks on a mission to reach the bottom of a newly-discovered oceanic trench, which some speculate may be the lowest point on Earth. Facing great danger, he quickly finds himself in a physical and psychological fight against mysterious forces.” Director Kornel Mundruczo (“White God”) is attached to direct, with Landis and David Goyer producing.
And of course everyone who went to see “Batman V. Superman” saw Jesse Eisenberg do an impression of Landis in his characterization of Lex Luthor, so Landis really is EVERYWHERE now…
GOD PARTICLE EMERGES FROM THE MYSTERY BOX
“10 Cloverfield Lane” got some exceptionally good reviews and did well at the box office, and now another science fiction-film is revealed to be in the works under JJ Abrams Bad Robot-banner. “Selma” actor David Oyelowo and “Beyond the Lights” star Gugu Mbatha-Raw are signed to star in “God Particle“, which is said to take place in the near future and revolve around “a team of astronauts on a mission who make a terrifying discovery that challenges all they know about the fabric of reality, as they desperately fight for survival.” Julius Onah is directing the film with Abrams and Bryan Burk producing. The film has already a set February 27, 2017 release date and filming is set to begin soon.
SPIT-TAKE OF THE WEEK
In the least surprising news, Disney keeps feeding more material into that live-action adaptation machine. This time it’s reported that they are doing a live-action movie of Rose Red. No, not the Stephen King miniseries “Rose Red” – but a “Snow White“-spinoff, focusing on Snow White’s sister Rose Red, who appeared in Grimms’ fairy tales in an adventure that had no relation to the more well-known “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, that inspired the original Disney animated film. It is said that the story is “a revisionist take that transposes Rose Red into the Snow White tale, making her a key player in the later part of the classic story.”
Huh. I guess this is a response to Universal’s “Snow White“-movie franchise which has it’s first spinoff coming out soon. It’s the “Snow White”-wars. Winter is coming…
That is all.
